Pat McGrath x Bridgerton Belle of the Ball Palette Review & Swatches
Belle of the Ball
Pat McGrath Belle of the Ball MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.42 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette inspired by Bridgerton’s season two. The palette includes two gel-powder eyeshadows, one baked eyeshadow (comparable to Astrals or other “special” shades in the larger Motherships), two more traditional shimmers, and one matte eyeshadow. All six shades were pigmented, long-wearing, and easy to use with the most sparkly shade having some fallout during wear.

Refinement
Refinement is a very pale pink with warm, almost peachy undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was soft, lightly creamy, and finely-milled–almost silky to the touch–and produced full color payoff in one layer. It stayed on well for 10 hours before fading visibly.

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.
The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.
The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Forbidden Amour
Forbidden Amour is a dark, pinky-plum with cooler undertones and a matte finish. It had rich pigmentation in a single layer, which was paired with a smooth, velvety texture that wasn’t powdery and had some substance to it, which ensured it retained its opacity even on bare skin. It wore well for 10 hours before showing signs of fading.

Diamond's Desire
Diamond’s Desire is a rich, medium-dark rosy copper with moderate, warm undertones and a mega-dose of multicolored sparkle (mostly gold and pink) with a slightly translucent base. I think this is comparable to many shades with the name “Astral” in them, though this was nearly opaque from the get-go. I would recommend using this over a slightly tacky base or with an adhesive spray to minimize fallout over time, as there was some over the 10 hours it lasted for otherwise.

Love the sparkling shades Diamond’s Desire and Forever Charmed! Forever Charmed reminds me of PMG Gigabyte.
How does this compare to the first iteration? They look so similar! Do you have a preference for one over the other? I’m curious as to your personal opinion.
This is probably my least favorite PMG palette ever released. It doesn’t really for me as a color story!
Christine, I agree with you 100%. This is such an odd hodge-podge of colors!
Normally I’m eager to use PMG palettes on their own, but this one left me feeling so uninspired 🙁
Wow! “Least favorite ever” speaks volumes. Thank you for that, Christine. As always, I value your input.
The glitch with missing dupes happened again..
Sorry – I have been struggling to get dupes added in a timely manner due to having issues with my hand. I had PT yesterday for it, and I wasn’t able to get them up until just now. If you refresh, they are there and have been since about 2PM PT, but it was posted a few hours earlier. It isn’t a glitch – I am just failing a bit over here to keep up with what needs to be done physically.
Take care Christine!
I’ll try 🙂
Hi, what happens to the dupes in this review? The formula overview is repeated redundantly after each shade. Is there an error with this review? Thanks
Hi Clidre,
Sorry – I have been struggling to get dupes added in a timely manner due to having issues with my hand. I had PT yesterday for it, and I wasn’t able to get them up until just now. If you refresh, they are there and have been since about 2PM PT, but it was posted a few hours earlier.
If only I could make sense out of the strange color story, then I would get it! But, as much as I adore the aqua and olive green, they don’t seem to be shades that I would use with the other 4. And those other 4 make for a gorgeous eye look on their own! I think I would have rather seen something that meshed more with two greens, something earthier.
Yes, I like the two greens best too. And am always looking for green-centric palettes. A creamy pastel cool-toned yellow matte would have added something and even a grungy -grey-green neutral. Or a straight out dazzle me emerald duochrome. But hey, that’s the neutral olive talking so not sure how Bridgerton it is.
Hmmm – this colour story doesn’t seem as cohesive as some of Pat’s other palettes. I am struggling to marry the olive green and minty shades with the pinky coral and berry shades in general – I feel like there is a shade missing here, although I don’t know which one. Less pinks would have been better overall as they are reasonably close in shade colour (on the eye they would be at least).
It’s certainly up to Pat’s usual high standard of production. Thank you for the review and the dupes Christine. I know it’s so hard with your hand at the moment.
I’ve enjoyed Bridgerton 1 immensely so can’t wait for Bridgerton 2 to arrive. I’ve only been using higher end eyeshadow for a couple years so maybe that’s why I’m so hyped for this. I’m also now interested in the Subliminal mothership since it has the very similar gigabyte shade.
Subliminal is a fun one!
This palette makes no sense at all to me. After reading the comments I’m glad I’m not the only one feeling like this. I thought for a bit that I completely lacked imagination.
I do hope all who gets this will enjoy it, it’s just not one for me.
I have both Bridgerton palettes and I’m really enjoying using both of them together! I keep reaching for them – the looks are so perfect for spring. I feel the second one is more of an add-on to the first than a freestanding palette. There is enough difference in the new shades that I’m glad I bought the second one. I also love the coordinating blushes and lipsticks that make it easy to put together a look that doesn’t clash. It’s a lot of pink but as a former pink naysayer I’ve come to accept that pink really suits me, and I like it a lot more now.
Hmm i would have thought Matheo from the new Melt palette was maybe a dupe for Forever Charmed but apparently these are too different. Lovely shades both of them.
While I agree with everyone that the color story is a bit weird, I would be lying if I didn’t say I want this one. PMGL just take all my money. I obviously wouldn’t use it as a stand alone palette but the shades are lovely and because they are pretty much all shades I would wear, I believe it would mesh well with most of the other palettes that I use a lot. I can see it working well with my Give Me Glow palette in Vintage Rose and so many others. Whether I will spring for it is another matter. I have to give it some thought.
Do I want that single eyeshadow with the bee pressed in to the pan? Yes, absolutely yes! I would buy that single in a pretty little decorative compact in a second – it’s the star for me. I like seeing brands mess around with pan designs now that we’ve all been flooded with the same shades for years.
Everything else….I bang on about pink and redundancy and PMG being ultimately a let down for the price she charges, blah blah blah. But I do seriously want some bee shadow singles.
