Sextrology

Pat McGrath Sextrology LuxeTrance Lipstick ($38.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a soft, medium pink with warm, yellow undertones and a cream finish. It had good pigmentation–just shy of full coverage–with a creamy, lightweight texture that slid across the lips without tugging and applied even, smooth coverage. This shade had a bit more slip compared to others that I tried, and it was one of the “weaker” shades but by no means a weak lipstick. It wore well for five hours and had a touch of color that had sunk into my deeper lip lines after four hours of wear. The formula was lightly hydrating.

Formula Overview

$40.00/0.14 oz. - $285.71 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have a "intense color payoff" with "comfort" and "rich hydration" that has a "satiny sheen." Of the shades I've tried, they are richly pigmented, long-wearing, incredibly comfortable to wear from start to finish, hydrating, and generally flattering on the lips.

The texture was smooth, velvety, and creamy enough to glide across the lips with ease but never felt slippery or too clingy. Most shades performed exceptionally well, and while pricey, they at least lived up to a lot of the claims. There was no discernible scent or taste.

Beautiful Creature

Pat McGrath Beautiful Creature LuxeTrance Lipstick ($38.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a slightly muted, medium-dark reddish plum with warm undertones and a cream finish. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that felt more like crushed velvet going on as it was dense but not heavy at all. The color applied evenly, adhered well, and lasted for almost eight hours while being hydrating.

Oh my gosh this color looks divine! Reminds me of Elf’s Ravishing Rose which I’ve been trying to find a better formulation of. Steep on the price but would be a lovely treat 😉

I am sooo hoping these do better on my lips. I had a weird super flaking almost allergic like reaction to the trio set I purchased so I am hoping the cream ones will not dry my lips out like the others. I mean it was bad yall, I looked like I was a snake shedding skin lol.

MoMerrell Avatar

Yea. IDK what that could be and really didn’t wanna go through each ingredient. I’m just going to hope that this is different from the matte. *fingerscrossed

It’s probably idiosyncratic, which makes it much harder to figure out. Nothing Pat is up on Cosdna, but i’m Certain she would never use a known problem ingredient. I doubt it is up on EWG, either. I have a problem with nudestix, which I can’t figure out, balling and stinging. Maybe if the other formula works for you…and I hope so, as I know how psyched you were by a Pat collection…you can get to the issue via process of elimination. Really sorry the trio didn’t work for you.

I was so bummed about the trio. I really really really was excited about it. I love the design and look of everything if only I could wear it. I’m so hoping it was just a fluke with the mattes.

Double trouble here. I just fell head first for both shades. WOW. These just have such an incredibly rich, yet un-heavy look to them!
Of course, at this price point, I checked the full dupe list. Saw that I do own TF Pink Chocolate and CP Faded. They’re in the same family as Beautiful Creature, but considerably lighter, so I believe it will be perfectly fine for me to get Beautiful Creature. As for Sextrology, I know it’s one I’ll have to try on. Did see Maybelline Blushing Bud as a possible dupe. I have that one and it is just strange looking against my skin. Sextrology seems to be a more flattering of a shade, I believe!

Out of curiosity, how do you determine which shades to purchase? Is it as a representative range of the different sections of the line or shades that you personally like?

Christine Avatar

It depends on the brand, the price point, the size of the line, etc. I do not purchase based on what I like or what I would wear – if I cannot afford to buy all shades, then I typically choose a variety in depth, undertone, and/or finish and try to think about what shades may be more popular or interesting for readers to see (e.g. when Louboutin came out with lipsticks, the signature red would be reviewed by tons of people – no need to get that shade), depending on the range.
