Hyped

NARS Hyped NARSissist Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.48 oz.) is a new, limited edition holiday palette that features 12 shades with a mix of mattes and shimmers from pale beige to berry to soft black. It has a rosier vibe to the color scheme and runs light to mid-tone in depth with the exception of White Horse, a soft black.

The quality was comparable to past NARS eyeshadow palettes, which is decent to good but not at the peak of where eyeshadow can go; the mattes were blendable but were on the more powdery side, while the shimmers were slightly thinner and dustier, so they didn’t have as much pop/shine once applied. The shimmers had a tendency to look a little washed out.

We are Family

We are Family is a bright, white gold with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation paired with a soft, slightly dry texture that wasn’t prone to sheering out or having fallout during application. The eyeshadow applied evenly and blended out without any issues. This shade stayed on nicely for seven and a half hours before starting to fade.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.04 oz. - $475.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "rich, high-impact color" that is "lightweight" and has "increased blendability." Like most larger ranges, there are winners and losers, and some of how they perform can be related to the type of finish. The mattes are soft, slightly dusty in the pans (or not at all) with medium to opaque, often buildable, color coverage. The satin and metallics tend to be smoother, more blendable, and more pigmented with less effort; NARS does the these lower shimmer finishes particularly well, which just looks "melted" on the skin as they lay down so smoothly and have a great shine.

Most shades applied better on my lid than swatched on my arm, which has been something seen across NARS' eyeshadows for years and didn't change with the recent update to their powder eyeshadow formula. On average, they lasted between seven and nine hours on me without primer. They did apply well over primer and stayed on well for 14 hours with minimal fading.

Worth noting: the updated formula and packaging resulted in a product decrease from 0.07 oz. per pan to 0.04 oz. The single eyeshadows received a more noticeable price drop (from $24 to $19) but the duo eyeshadows could be priced better (from $36 to $35).

Shake Shake Shake

Shake Shake Shake is a light peach with warm undertones and faint, pinkish pearl throughout. The texture was a bit denser compared to other shades in the palette, though it wasn’t difficult to pick up with a dry brush. It had rich color payoff that adhered well to bare skin and blended out nicely. It lasted well for seven and a half hours before fading visibly.

Doctor Love

Doctor Love is a light-medium brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly powdery consistency that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out well. I didn’t have any issues with the color sheering out too readily. It wore well for seven and a half hours before I noticed signs of fading.

Ain't No Stopping Now

Ain’t No Stopping Now is a light-medium coral with warm undertones and a pinker base but paired with a lot of warmer, peachy-gold shimmer that gave it a soft, frosted finish. It had good pigmentation in a single layer, but the texture was dusty and thin, which gave it a more faded appearance when applied to bare skin. This shade lasted well for seven hours before fading visibly on me.

Exxxcess is a rich, deeper berry with cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. I felt like it was functionally matte in practice, but there was a very fine shimmer running through it. It had opaque color coverage with a soft, blendable consistency that wasn’t too powdery nor too firmly pressed in the pan. It wore nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

Last Party

Last Party is a light-medium pink with warmer undertones and larger flecks of gold and pink sparkle. It appears to have the Hardwired finish, which is a significantly more sparkly formula that can be used wet or dry (with wet application yielded more intensity). I find that this finish is difficult to work with dry–it’s just not worth the effort if you’re not going to use it with a dampened brush.

Dry application yielded semi-sheer coverage with moderate fallout and an uneven application, whereas dampened application yielded nearly opaque coverage with better adhesion and integration of the sparkles with the underlying base color on my skin. There was only slight fallout during application with a dampened brush. It lasted for seven hours applied wet and dry but dry had continual fallout while worn.

Formula Overview

$22.00/0.04 oz. - $550.00 Per Ounce

The formula "can be applied dry or with a dampened brush for stronger intensity." It is a very glittery formula, and naturally, it performed significantly better when used with a dampened brush or an adhesive base.

Applied dry, they were typically sheer to semi-sheer with light to moderate fallout when blended out on my lid. They lasted between five and seven hours with light to moderate fallout. Applied wet, they were typically semi-opaque to opaque with minimal fallout when blended out and minimal to slight fallout during wear (about eight hours).

The consistency was soft, slightly drier/chunkier, but they the base colors were blendable and easy enough to use. I did find that they applied decently over primer when applied dry compared to on bare skin.

White Horse

White Horse is a soft black with neutral-to-warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had a drier, thinner texture that yielded nearly opaque coverage, but there was a dustiness to the way it looked on my skin. For example, when blended out on its own, the edge was a little ragged to my eye. The color stayed on decently for seven hours before fading noticeably.

Me too Nancy! Was great being a teenager in the 70’s. And you can’t help but sing the songs when you hear these shade names. Disco didn’t get much love in the late 70’s but I liked it, and it had a great beat. I think this palette is pretty enough, will be very tempting to pick it up!

This eyeshadow palette is quite typical of NARS these days – the quality of the eyeshadows are all over the map, some great, some good and some very average.
A beautiful eye look Christine. You can really make a silk purse out of sow’s ear (as the saying goes).

Nice enough palette, but easy pass for me. I’m just not into the pinks. Does anyone else think the black eyeshadow seems out of place? I think a really deep brown would have been a better choice, but that’s just my opinion. Beautiful look Christine….I agree with Genevieve…you can really find that sows ear silk purse in all of these palettes and you never seem to be repetitive.

I really kind of love this. I think some of its weaknesses might be eccentric strengths Like a muted, faded neon hot pink?? That just stimulates my creativity!! One could go from full Blondie to Victorian Goth and back again depending on the base and other products. I really like that mauve and that other matte pink and that messy black, I’d even like to see that tragic sparkly pink mixed with some water-proofing liquid.
I don’t want to like it, but I think I love it. It sort of has the imperfect beauty of sweaty people on a dance-floor. It’s kind of a hot mess.
This one may end up with me, lol.
