Melt Cosmetics Space Cake, Stupid Love, Summer! Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Melt Cosmetics Space Cake Lipstick

This review features the other three shades of Melt Cosmetics Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.16 oz.) that I purchased. You can see the first three here as well as get a more in-depth review of the formula. To summarize, the issue with these is really the consistency is quite dry, which means the lipstick tugs and drags on the lips as you apply it. They are somewhat drying on me, though they aren’t as drying as you might expect given their texture. The lighter shades tend to “crack” over time and gather into lip lines as they wear down, though the formula wears quite long in general but will leave a strong stain behind. Removal is somewhat challenging, and I’d recommend busting out your industrial-strength remover and several cotton pads. The formula has a sweet, vanilla scent that almost gets tropical-like, but it can smell and taste like play-doh at times.

Melt Cosmetics Space Cake Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a bluish-gray with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage. This was actually the creamiest and easiest to apply shade out of the six I bought, though I wouldn’t describe it as creamy–it is still a stiffer, drier matte texture that will pull and drag during application, just less so compared to the other shades. It lasted for eight hours and left behind a stain–caution, the stain looks a bit like a bruise. It was somewhat dry while worn. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Butch (P, $18.00) was the closest I could think of, but it is lighter and bluer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Melt Cosmetics Stupid Love Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a bright, neon magenta fuchsia with cool, blue undertones and a matte finish. It had full, opaque color payoff. The texture was somewhat dry and stiff, so it pulled at the lip and dragged as it applied. Once on, it was able to look even and smooth in terms of color coverage, and the color lasted for eight hours and left behind a strong, fuchsia stain. It was drying over time, unfortunately. Sephora + Pantone Universe Radiant Rush (LE, $18.00) is darker. Bite Beauty Moscato (P, $28.00) is less blue-based. Bite Beauty Satsuma (LE, $24.00) is more muted. MAC Candy Yum Yum (P, $16.00) is less magenta, slightly darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Melt Cosmetics Summer! Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a light, peachy-orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. I had to apply this one on four separate occasions to get it to apply decently on my lips, because it just dragged so badly. It seemed to get slightly less dry as it wore down, but it was a challenge to apply from the tube. This shade lasts about six hours on me but looks horrible after three hours–it cracks, settles and pulls into lip lines, and just looks so, so dry and my lips felt somewhat dry after wearing this. Too Faced Melted Coral (P, $21.00) is darker. NARS Torres del Paine (LE, $25.00) is slightly darker, more muted. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

This may sound weird but I’m actually liking Space Cake it’s sooooo interesting and unique in my opinion. Summer is really pretty but the wear of it sounds bad. Thank you for the swatches

I just got Black Sesame from NYX, and its definitely less blue, but is a grey shade, I actually think it’s really beautiful, and a good one to try if you’re not sure about spending 19.00 on a grey lippy!

Sarah Avatar

Space Cake definitely wouldn’t be for me but I could see some really interesting artsy looks coming out of it. I could see it having some good layering potential with glosses as well.

Interesting! Your experience was exactly like mine. Which is reassuring as just owning Space Cake and By Starlight meant I wasn’t sure if their differences were just my particular tubes, but now it seems a consistent trait. Spaced Cake is definitely far above By Starlight in ease of application and is the best one IMO. It’s still dry and not as easy or creamy as the average lipstick, but it’s the creamiest of the bunch. It’s also the only one I’d recommend to people who don’t want to put in as much work to get the desired look. On me it looks a bit deeper, more gray. I do love that shade. NYX’S Macaron shade Black Sesame also makes for a cool gradient effect with Space Cake 🙂

I feel Summer only compliments people with fair skin really well. As much as I love the color it looked just silly on me. I’m obsessed with Space Cake but debating if I could pull it off with my warm skin tone.

I’ve got Space Cake, By Starlight, DGAF, 6six6 and Blow. I’d say Blow is a step above these in texture, it’s creamier and less drying, though I’m willing to put up with the drying consistency for such incredible colours. They actually kinda remind me of Illamasqua’s lipsticks in the way they drag…?

Christina Lee Avatar

wow, I feel like this is the first honest review I’ve seen of melt cosmetics. every where I look people are singing the praises of this stuff – probably cause rihanna wears it! 😛 i’ve always wanted to try them but now i’m much more hesitant. thanks for the honesty!

Miss J Avatar

Ok, Space Cake looks totally freaking amazing on you! You are rocking that, girl! I would love to know you’re thoughts on Blow if you ever get a chance to order it.

Veronica Avatar

The only brand I can think of with an exact dupe for Space Cake is probably Lime Crime, which is not a business I can recommend in in ethics or product quality. It is a really nifty shade, though. It’s one of those ones I’d love to try but now myself well enough to know it would never get the wear it deserved – especially not at $20 a pop.

Kathi Avatar

Is it strange that I actually like the way “Space Cake” looks on you? Paired with a grey/black smokey eye and a cool highlighter on the cheeks it would work really nicely in a winter themed shooting. (:

Gisele Avatar

All of my Melt lippies dry my lips in a really, really, really bad way… but I still love Belladonna 2 and Shady Lady. Both last forever on my lips, and the colors are beautiful! 🙂
Summer is really impossible to use, tho. 🙁

Gisele Avatar

I go out with the beautiful lippie, pretending that nothing is happening, then rush home, remove it and use an entire tube of Ceralip! LOL

Verladesh Gilles Avatar

I love dark lipstick jit I cannot picture wearing Space Cake. The undertone is too blue for me, unless maybe as an ombre with Haute Couture.

Shana Avatar

Summer’s way too gorgeous for me to not get it. I wish I was an awesome person and could pull off Space Cake, that’s such a cool color! And you saying it leaves behind a “bruise-like” stain makes me think it would make an awesome Halloween zombie lipstick haha.

Chloe Avatar

Space cake is such an interesting color, I really like it. Too bad about Summer!, though.

Have you tried the brand Dose of Color? I’d like to see your review of them!

Alana Avatar

Space Cake is not only a unique color but there aren’t many brands that promote a shade like this, which is one of the reasons why I’m thinking about getting this. My only fears that are pulling me back is that if I wear this shade I’m afraid that it will clash with the yellow undertones in my skin, since Space Cake does go in that cool toned, muddy gray direction. I could put on face primers to make my skin appear cooler or mix the lipstick with other ones that I already own, but I dont see much else that I can do to make this shade work for me.

artemis Avatar

That dry feeling seems to always happen w peach lipsticks 🙁 I got 2 from 2 different brands and both give that feeling, less so than this one you described, but still…

meganlisa Avatar

I might be posting this too late….but will ask anyway.
Summer is just so pretty. And, when I look at it on you it looks flawless. I’ve seen you do the same with other like not-so-great (or worse) formulas. How did you get Summer to apply so flawlessly? Do you put a balm on first? Just take time to even it out? I’m asking because we all end up with shades that just are difficult. How do we save them? Have you done a related post? I love your comment to me once about using a spatula or little knife to get hard and dry product usable. What about lipstick (and remember, I’m the matte lover so do sometimes confront this issue). Totally understand if you never see this question. I’ve been so busy I’ve been late to your posts…

Amby Avatar

I have space cake, dgaf(wearing in profile pic), summer, bella donna 2, blow and shady lady. It seems some colors are more drying than others. I wear eos balm under them since on me, its very moisturizing and isnt greasy….if that makes sense. I love the pow factor they have. Summer and stupid love look great on you!

Christine Avatar

The finished texture is nothing a little Elizabeth 8 Hour Cream cant fix. I would also def lock the color down and inside the liplines with a matching or neutral lipliner and a lip primer.

Christine Avatar

I think it’s just a matter of whether someone is willing to do that 🙂 For me, it’s a bunch of extra steps that I probably wouldn’t bother with unless the color was really, really unique (there are better formulas that are less work for less unique shades, you know?).

Rachael Avatar

I’ve been eyeing these since before there release..your swatches,.after I got so aggravated with Mac’s ridiculousness with the Osbourne release online and at Nordies, gave me the push to give them my money instead…stupid love and darling..I LOVE MATTE so there perfection to me…ordered at 4pm Mon….got them at 1:30on Wed….they deserved my money more then mac….who really needs to change how they do there LE collections
