Maybelline Royal, Major, Slay It Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Glosses Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Royal
Maybelline Royal Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Gloss ($7.99 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is a vibrant, medium-dark purple with warm, pink undertones and a cream finish. It had medium coverage, which was somewhat buildable but not practical–it felt overwhelming with more than one layer, as the gloss itself was thicker and heavier. One layer was comfortable, as it developed into a more gel-like feel that did not slide around, but two layers made it seem more slippery to me. The gloss pulled into my lip lines and applied unevenly overall. It did wear awhile at six hours, was lightly hydrating, and left a fuchsia stain behind.
The formula is supposed to have “full coverage” that won’t “feather or migrate” paired with a “high-impact glossy finish.” The formula is light-medium in thickness–by no means a thin, featherweight gloss but not shy of being totally goopy or heavy-feeling–with moderate tackiness. I find that it initially went on feeling like a thicker, creamy gloss with a lot of slip, but it developed into more of a gel-like consistency that adhered better and did not slide around after 20 to 30 seconds. I did not experience feathering or migration with any shades tested so far (and I went for the deeper shades first!). The wear has ranged from four to six hours with a non-drying to lightly hydrating effect. The formula had a subtle, sweet scent but did not taste soapy or linger as long as I have experienced with Maybelline lip products in the past.

Major
Maybelline Major Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Gloss ($7.99 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is a deep, navy blue with cool undertones and a cream finish. Applied, it looked more indigo, as it was not fully opaque and the natural pink tones of my lip color came through. The gloss has a thicker consistency, which made it less amenable to building up coverage without also feeling heavy and glue-like. It had a tackier quality, but with a single layer, it was still comfortable to wear. With such a deep color like this, the lack of opacity played a role in the unevenness of the application. The color stayed on for six hours and left a fuchsia stain behind, which lingered for hours.

Slay It
Maybelline Slay It Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Gloss ($7.99 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is a deep burgundy with cooler undertones and a cream finish. It had good color coverage, and while it was not opaque, it did apply better than the prior two! It still pulled into some of my lip lines, but I was able to smooth out the application after it “set” into its more gel-like state, which is when I found it most forgiving to work with. The gloss lasted for six hours on me, left a fuchsia stain behind, and was lightly hydrating.

Ooooh, Slay It is interesting, a blackened burgundy, easier to pull off than straight up black, very unique color. I like it! Will look for promo
Slay It is pretty good for the type of shade in a gloss format, too 🙂
Major is major awesome! I love how it looks on the lips!!!
I may have to get it!
Haha 😉
Slay It looks like a perfect Off-Broadway shade of burgundy! I would love to rock this come cooler weather….many months from now.
However, the only blue or purple gloss I would ever buy and wear would have to be Smashbox’s Iced Out. These 2 fall very short of that one’s utter blurple perfection.
That’s a very unique of describing Slay It, Nancy! I like it!
Slay it is awesome!
Actually, I think these look pretty darn good considering the shades, especially for drug-store. They’d definitely need to be worn over a pencil or lipstick, though.
Honestly, even with the score, that purple is much better than I’d have expected for a purple gloss. Over a liner, these would be quite pretty.
A matching liner would certainly help a bit!
I love the colours, it’s a pity the purple and the blue apply so unevenly.
Slay It is interesting. I’m going to put it on my wishlist for later, and hope these will make their way across the Atlantic.
Oh my – what glossy shades these are! Not my personal preference, but to those who love these colours they are pretty good.
These are perfect. I am getting into more of a creamy/shiny lip than Mattes. Mattes js seem to be so much all the time. I am definitely picking up a few especially with the price!
