Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color
Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color ($7.99 for 0.15 oz.) is supposed to “deliver a burst of bold lip color” with a “creamy texture” and a matte finish. I have ten shades that I picked up awhile ago when they first launched, but Maybelline’s website shows the range with twenty shades now (I couldn’t seem to find them online to buy, though), and I haven’t seen anything new at my local drugstores for ages (I’ve gone twice a week for the last month to find summery goodness with no luck!). In general, the formula has good color payoff with a velvety, creamy consistency that covers evenly and most shades seem to make lips appear smoother but some shades were prone to pulling into lip lines as the color wore away. The big thing about these is that they have a mostly matte finish and are more comfortable to wear than many matte formulas due to the velvety feel (almost like a silicone primer, but not quite as heavy and not clingy). The formula was neither drying nor hydrating on me. It had a sweet, plastic-like scent but no taste.
Maybelline Nude Embrace Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color ($7.99 for 0.15 oz.) is a light-medium beige with strong, warm brown tones and a satin finish. It had good color payoff with a creamy consistency, so there was no drag when applied, but the color migrated into lip lines during initial application. Despite trying to smooth the color out of the lines, as it wore on, the color kept gravitating towards the lip lines. It wore for four and a half hours in all and was neither drying nor hydrating. ColourPop Precocious (LE, $5.00) is lighter. MAC Naturally Transformed (P, $16.00) is darker. MAC Sensual Sparks (LE, $16.00) is darker. Too Faced Melted Nude (P, $21.00) is brighter, warmer. NARS Biscayne Park (P, $25.00) is darker. Givenchy Beige Mousseline (101) (P, $36.00) is darker, cooler. MAC Wholesome (LE, $16.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Maybelline Daringly Nude Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color ($7.99 for 0.15 oz.) is a peachy-pink with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had fairly opaque pigmentation that covered evenly, but again, the color had a tendency to emphasize lip lines. It wasn’t as noticeable as it was with Nude Embrace, at least. On me, the color lasted for four and a half hours with more color settling into lip lines over time, though it wasn’t drying. MAC Reel Sexy (LE, $16.00) is darker, warmer. MAC Kinda Sexy (P, $16.00) is darker. Burberry Pink Apricot (301) (P, $30.00) is darker. Givenchy Beige Plume (102) (P, $36.00) is darker, cooler. MAC Antonio’s Girls (LE, $16.00) is cooler. Anastasia Pure Hollywood (P, $20.00) is lighter, less glossy. MAC Oxblood (LE, $16.00) is darker, warmer. ColourPop Button (P, $5.00) is darker, brighter, warmer. Bite Beauty Leche (P, $24.00) is darker, brighter. Bite Beauty Amaretto (P, $24.00) is darker, brighter. Tom Ford Beauty First Time (09) (LE, $50.00) is more shimmery, brighter, cooler. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Maybelline Touch of Spice Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color ($7.99 for 0.15 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark rosy plum with subtle, warmer undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that covered evenly and smoothly. The texture was creamy, and it was much more forgiving on the lips. It wore well for five and a half hours, and I didn’t have any issues with the color pulling into lip lines. It wasn’t drying when worn. Maybelline Yummy Plummy (P, $7.49) is cooler. Make Up For Ever #4 (P, $19.00) is lighter. Tom Ford Beauty Casablanca (P, $50.00) is cooler, glossier. Marc Jacobs Beauty Infamous (228) (P, $30.00) is lighter, cooler. Tom Ford Beauty Richard (LE, $32.00) is warmer. Tom Ford Beauty Cary (LE, $32.00) is cooler, glossier. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

How strong was the scent? Does it fade fast?
Scent seems to be the biggest downfall of ds lipsticks. Always some variation of plastic : sweet plastic, burnt plastic, strong plastic, subtle plastic.
It’s noticeable and doesn’t fade.
I can’t think of one brand, HE or DS, even “luxury”, that isn’t scented…
Scent I don’t mind, as long as it’s a good scent. Vanilla =good. Plastic=bad
Clinique and Bobbi Brown?
I swear, the Milani matte lipsticks have NO SCENT WHATSOEVER. After most of their products smelling heavily of fake watermelon, this floored me. I just grabbed one and inhaled deeply–still nothing.
The scent is kinda bad and kinda strong lol. It smells like powdery plastic or baby pampers to me. It’s not unbearable but it’s not very pleasant either. I still like these mattes though. Minus the weird smell they’re pretty good.
I might get Touch of Spice. Even though I’m staring at it thinking I *must* have a dupe somewhere that I never wear… I can’t think of anything. This will probably pull more reddish on me. Your look is awesome though–pairs so well with that blush, whatever it is!
I wish I knew the blush, but these photos are soooooo old and I couldn’t find it in my notes (which aren’t very good if I’m not wearing more noticeable makeup/reviewed that product elsewhere).
I really wanted to know the blush too! danget!
Ah I was just going to ask about the blush, looks beautiful on you!
Is it IT cosmetics? One of the long lasting shades? Like the rose, peony, or mystic mauve? Just a guess.. 🙂
No, I don’t think so! I reviewed all of those prior to owning these.
it looks similar to the becca beach tint souffles possibly
I have Touch of Spice, and I’ve been wearing it constantly. I’m a huge matte lover, and I think the texture of these is to die for! I did a side-by-side swatch after seeing a blog compare Touch of Spice to the Revlon matte balm in Sultry. Indeed, on my skin, they look practically the same. Both are very comfortable matte options.
Thanks for the heads up, Clio!
Wow, I have Touch of Spice (love it, so pretty) but didn’t realize it was a dupe for HE lippies from Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs! Makes me even happier 🙂
It is!
These are all too dark and/or warm for me, but it’s nice to see some “nudes” for those with deeper complexions than mine-especially in such an affordable range.
Hopefully some of the other shades in the range could work!
Your skin looks SO glowy! Love Touch of Spice! Have that one and it’s gorgeous! 🙂
Thanks, Shipra!
It’s really interesting how reddish Touch of Spice pulls on you, Christine! It’s one of my favorites and I wear it frequently. I’m very fair, and on me it pulls VERY brown. Just the barest hint of a reddish tone! So interesting how times change from person to person. Thanks for the review, can’t wait to find some of those new colors you mentioned!
Quick off topic question – is it against site etiquette to mention brands we would like to see reviews in the comments? Is there an email address you prefer to have those types of suggestions submitted to? Theres an indie brand I’d love to see some reviews on but I’m not sure if it’s on your radar or not!
I prefer via email, since I would rather the post stay on topic, as the posts live on forever so when someone searches for these lipsticks and goes through the comments, I like them be relevant to the actual post topic 🙂 There is a “Contact Us” link on the bottom of every page if you need to send an email. Thanks!
What blush do you have on in these photos?? Its gorgeous!
Hi Nikki,
I have no idea 🙁 These photos are from awhile ago (whenever these were first launched), and I couldn’t figure out what blush I was wearing from my notes 🙁
Touch of Spice is my ride or die! lol
Yay!
This is one of my favorite formula from Maybelline. I love that the lipsticks are matte but they don’t dry my lips. You should check out Craving Coral, it’s the perfect orange red for summer.
Thanks for the rec!
Touch of spice is nice! For me this would be a good shade for fall and winter. I don’t feel comfortable in the typical dark vampy colors that are always hot during those seasons, so I tend to just go for a somewhat moodier version of bright pink or coral.
I could see it working for fall/winter!
Thanks for reviewing these! I can totally see why so many people love touch of spice.
No problem!
I bought Touch of Spice several months ago when they first launched, it’s fantastic! I wear it a lot more than I thought I would. I also find it similar to KVD’s Lolita lipstick, but way more comfortable on the lips.
Definitely more comfortable!
I have 3 of these lipsticks, including touch of spice. I absolutely love them, the texture is amazing, good colour payoff. I always get complimented when i wear these. I find touch of spice really compliments my east indian skin. The only issue is they arent available everywhere in canada, i’ve had to pick up a few from the states.
What other two do you have?
I love Touch of Spice– it’s one of my go-tos as a daily lipstick. I’m excited that Maybelline is expanding their Matte line!
Nice!
Touch Of Spice is hands down one of my favorite lipsticks. Such a gorgeous, versatile color with a comfortable formula. Absolute gem from the drug store.
It definitely is a nice one!
Thanks for reviewing these! Are you going to do the new shades as well? I am dying to know how Vibrant Violet compares to MAC’s Heroine!
Hi Alyssa!
I believe I mentioned it in the beginning of the post, but I haven’t been able to find them where I live, even though I check twice every week. SO sorry!
Me too!! I have Heroine and love it, but very curious about Vibrant Violet. I’m going to be prowling the drugstores for that one
I managed to track down Touch of Spice after all the raves had it selling out everywhere. It’s a nice formula that lasts but it pulls browner on me than in your swatches, so I don’t seem to reach for it as much as the plummier shades I own.
It definitely is warmer than I expected!
Oooh, I love that spice color!
Yay! 🙂
I didn’t think any of these would be my kind of shades but Touch of Spice <3
That seems to be the fave!
Hi Christine! The reason you can’t find the other 10 online to buy is that they’re very new – I haven’t even seen them in store in a temporary display yet. I only know about them because G. at Nouveau Cheap has posted some pictures of the display and swatches from readers. I’m sure they’ll show up in a few weeks 🙂
Oh, I know they’re new! 🙂 I just meant I didn’t find any additional info on them except on Maybelline’s site and they weren’t locally available (as in: that is why I don’t have them to share). Unfortunately, it seems like my local drugstores are about 6-8 weeks behind, if we get it at all!
I actually like all the colors on you Christine, but now the hunt is on for Touch of Spice. I like Maybelline’s lippies and the price is right!
Thanks, Trish!
Touch of Spice is nice. Might be too brown for me.
Some readers have said it definitely can lean browner!
I love Touch of Spice! It’s interesting how one color can look so different on various skin tones. That looks on you the way NARS Audacious in Audrey looks on me! Can’t wait for the new additions to the line to hit the stores!
I hope they arrive soon!
These Maybelline matte lipsticks are awesome. Touch of spice is one of my faves. I also like lust for blush. I’m anxious to try the new shades from this line.
Me too!
I really like Touch of Spice.
Awesome! 🙂
I generally like this range of lipsticks – really great for the price. I have not noticed any scent or taste with these lipsticks and I certainly have a few. None of the above colours are really to my liking – too nude for me, but the range is great.
I’m glad yours have no scent/taste!
Yay, I’m glad to see you’re reviewing this formula. I like these matte lipsticks, but I didn’t like many of the original 1O shades. I only picked up Lust for Blush.
I hesitated on getting Touch of Spice in case it pulled too brown on me. 🙁
It looks really nice on you though. ^^
But the good news is Maybelline has released 1O new shades for this matte line!
Glad you liked one!
Hi Christine, do you have the Revlon Matte Balm in Sultry? Do you know if it is similar to Touch of Spice? Thanks a lot!
I don’t think so! 🙁
Wow Touch of Spice looks bright on you in comparison to me. It’s a darker mauve brown shade on me. It actual a light vamp fall colour for me. 😉
I was initially worried about buying Daringly Nude over last Christmas, but I has enough pink in it to not look strange on my fair skin tone either. It look like a dusty rose on me a touch darker then my lip tone.
Happy to hear Daringly Nude ended up working out for you 😀
Touch of Spice is def the winner here! Love….
It is!
Love these lipsticks, even though there are only a few colors in the current line that I like. I’ve been stalking the aisles of all the stores that carry Maybelline in my area, but none of the new shades have turned up yet.
Daringly Nude works much better on my pale, slightly-cool toned skin than I was expecting it to. It’s probably the first “true nude” lipstick I’ve found that works on me, as opposed to a nude-pink or a peachy nude (not that I don’t love those!)
Touch of Spice is interesting, because it’s one of the more changeable shades I own. I was worried that it would pull brown on me, and it does…but only in certain types of indoor lighting. The rest of the time it’s a gorgeous cross between a brick red and a dark mauve. It’s darker than what I would normally wear on my lips, but I’ve found myself wearing it a lot lately!
I’m sure you don’t need anymore red lipsticks, but you should still give Siren in Scarlet a try. It’s my favorite of the three that I own, and is currently my go-to red.
I can totally see Touch of Spice being a chameleon!
I have one in Lust for Blush and the color is absolutely pretty on me. But I don’t like to wear it I think it’s because the smell and it tastes a little bad. I wish there was just unscented or something. I do, however love their color whisper lipsticks a lot.
And I’m also wondering if there is a dupe for Lust for Blush of a Mac lipstick? 😮
I wish they were unscented, too! 🙁
Must try Touch of Spice. I hope I can get a hold of it, since it seems to have generated more than it’s fair share of positive comments. I have a very hard time pulling off Nudes &/or muted shades, I’m NC20, I hope this will fill my void of a go to Nude. If it’s a little too dark to be considered a nude for me, perhaps it will be a good option for a toned down lipstick that I can pair with an intense eye &/or face, even though I’m not one to follow any ‘rules’ about make up.
Life has been really incredible bad, scary, frustrating, hard and challenging beyond anything I thought possible, therefore I have a huge backlog of unused makeup. As much as I love makeup it’s the last thing I think/feel/am unable to do. Thankfully I love lipstick & it’s a no brainier for me. I feel comfortable wearing it without anything else on my face and on occasion, I will reach for it. Frequently, I make judgments on lipsticks way too quickly and I rarely wear lipliner so I never think to try different combinations that could actually make a bad lipstick look amazing.
I adore Armani’s lipstick and apparently I randomly ordered an Armani lipstick around the holidays, I’m not sure why I even chose the color. I suppose the color online was much different than its picture. Somehow, its little brand new self made its way into a sea of unused MAC lipsticks. A few months ago, I was trying to pull myself together to look like I was well when I wasn’t, but I needed to visit my dad in the hospital and I was trying to look the total opposite of how I felt. So I grabbed the lipstick & I didn’t like it at all. I was pressed for time so I grabbed a new lipliner that was laying next to the lipstick & it was love. It’s by far one of my HG lip combos, I couldn’t stop wearing it because It’s unlike any other color I have. It’s a great combo that goes with most anything. I then had the realization and fear set in that this was a LE shade, just my luck it was. I called every store I could and asked for it. I couldn’t find it anywhere. I literally got laughed at by one sales associate when I asked about it. I even stalked the Arnani website & signed up for the restocking email more than a handful of times. I never received the email. I’m not quite sure how I lucked out but I found it & bought 2 backups because I love it that much.
Anyhow, it’s colors like these that are so different & difficult for me to wear. I really wish I could find a nude that works for me but it’s the lowest of priorities & I suppose that one will fall into in my lap when I’m not looking, until then my Armani lipstick can satiate my nude/lighter lipstick need. This is what happens when one literally starts wearing red lipstick in elementary school. It’s greatly influenced my makeup style, as well as my need to own every friggin’ red there is.
Thanks for the reviews!
It’s easily the most talked about shade of the original ten from what I can tell! And pretty much reinforced by comments here, haha!
It is amazing how a combination of lip products can really change how you feel about one 🙂
Touch of spice is just the color i like at the moment :)) wouldn’t buy it, tho, as i like creamier l/s and it’s not available in Romania, lol.
Totally understand 🙂
Hey, do you get Seventeen cosmetics over there? If you do, check out the matte range (in silver packaging), shade no. 2 looks sooo much like Touch of Spice.
Touch of Spice is such a pretty shade! A matte finish on my small, aging lips does me *no* favors, but this wouldn’t be the first time I’ve bought a matte lipstick for the color, and worn it with a dab of gloss for the more flattering finish. I just might have to grab that one if I can find it.
This might be a good option, as it tends to fill in than settle when they’re deeper.
Touch of spice is my fave! Bought it when it came out and it is my perfect nude because of my skin tone. You look radiant Christine! What’s on your cheeks? Is that the Tom Ford blush? lust or love or something along those lines? Thanks!
Unfortunately, the photos are several months old, and I couldn’t find what I wore on my cheeks (I try to write it down, but sometimes I forget to do so).
I like Touch of Spice. I think it could be quite a good nudeish colour for me.
YAY!
Well count me in as yet another who owns and LOVES Touch Of Spice! It is just such a flattering shade, especially for lt.-med into med.-dark skintones. One of my faves, but I tend to forget that even though I wear it often enough.
It’s a nice one!
