Purple is a Vamp

MAC Yung Rapunxel Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “deep plum” with an amplified finish. It’s a dark, vampy purple with red undertones and semi-opaque color coverage. Urban Decay Apocalypse is slightly redder. MAC Fervent is purpler. MAC Smoked Purple is more opaque, so it appears darker and the red undertones are subtler. NARS Train Bleu is more opaque, slightly darker.

It’s a collaboration color with Azealia Banks for Fashion’s Night Out. I just received this yesterday afternoon, and MAC’s website is really the only place the majority of people can access it (it is available at all NYC MAC stores, however)–right now, it says out of stock, but it also says “shipping soon” and allows you to add it to your bag.  It looks a bit more like a stain, because it’s not totally opaque, but it also looks somewhat uneven.  The consistency is creamy and thin (feels a little like a glaze in that regard).  It lasted five hours, and it did stain slightly.  MAC’s lipsticks are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

I am so disappointed 🙁

I went out my way to buy this because I missed out on the By Request collection and was jealous that everyone else had gotten their hands on the limited edition lipsticks and not me 🙁

I appreciate your review Christine, but this is not for me…

I still kind of want this, just because I love Azealia and MAC and purple and ugh. Living in Australia seriously sucks when it comes to buying makeup. I’ll try and content myself with one of the dupes I guess!

I figured this would be the case, not only with MAC, but with most brands when it comes to shades like this. I love this sort of shade, but I’ve learned to be very careful when purchasing. On a positive note, I have a *very* similar shade by Prestige, called Catwalk, that is extremely opaque, and half the price.

I rely so much on your swatches. I ordered this without seeing them though. So to see how lovely it looks on you, I am very happy I made the purchase. Thank you.

Oh, I think this is lovely! I don’t see any unevenness either. Am I crazy or does this look like MAC’s legendary Veruschka (Retro Matte) on the lips? I can’t seem to find mine to compare and, while it’s not sheer but matte, I swear the colours are very close. Hmm, on second thought, maybe the Prince Noir shown in your Smoked Purple link is closer. Dammit, now I desperately want Prince Noir. Desperately! MUST.HAVE! I’m going to see if it’s on eBay — eBay sellers’ price-gouging for MAC L/E items notwithstanding.

Oh but we know Verushka had fabulous coverage and that lovely old school matte texture! Since they did the By Request bit I am thinking its time for me to rally and ask for Verushka and Bronx back. Candy Yum Yum- a bright opaque color- showed these unapologetic colors can be screaming hits so I’m striking while the iron is hot… If Moxie made it, maybe the others can be ressurrected as well?

I usually take dark ‘stains’ like this one and blot them down to wear as an unstructured lip. Which is great look and it is usually long-lasting, but you lose so much of the intensity of the colour. Something like this would end up inevitably as a rose colour on me and you wouldn’t know it began as a purple lipstick. For a structured lip, I really hate this type of colour and go for something with much better coverage.

Welp, I ordered it the day it came out but I wanted opaque. I thought UD Apocalypse was such a ridiculous concession to the market they were trying to seduce with their “dangerous beauty” that was completely corporate safe. I wanted this to be a “serious” lipstick for me , particularly considering Azealia’s out there and honest lyrics. Blërg.

Christina Avatar

I’d love to work in a corporate place where UD Apocalypse is safe. I’m all for “not letting them bend you to the point where you’re not yourself any more”, but Apocalypse and likewise colours, unfortunately, are way past the boundary where I’ve found I need to compromise. At my level. I kind of wait for the time past 45 in hopefully a senior position, where I can rock the “witchy” look a former supervisor of mine dons. Think grey hair, eccentric clothes, dark dark lips. The only sad thing – I think these colours look best when you’re young. Young witch is not what I can sport at least in my legal profession 🙂

Hm, I actually quite like this. I have a lot of opaque, dark lipsticks similar in colour to this, but because my skin is so pale and I have dark red (natural) hair I end up looking somewhat corpse-like and extremely goth. Maybe this would look a little bit less stark.

It does look quite a lot like a YSL lip colour I have, though. Hmmm. Think I’ll put this on the back burner for now, but I’m open-minded towards it!

It really suits you, Christine, even if you weren’t keen on it! 🙂

Christine, my goodness, that color is absolutely beautiful on you!! Im sorry to read it has poor application. You have beautiful features & skin, but that color of lipstick makes you look ready to walk down the ‘cat walk’!!!! Maybee Guerlain G has exact shade. Hope you keep it in your “always available stack”

Wow it’s so early 90s. I’m having flashbacks of my older sister getting ready for a night out clubbing and bar hopping. You bet she rocked the scrunchie set high bun and gigantic hoop earrings to go with the dark lip.

(Yes I do know it’s inspired by Azealia’s look in her 1991 video.)

Too bad this is sold out. I really want to swatch it to see if I turn super goth.

I’m glad this is not all that unique, because it’s not available in Canada. I don’t have Smoked Purple either, but it is easier to get my hands on if I feel the need to get my hands on a colour like this (though I’m sure I have something similar in my stash!).

HOLLY Avatar

Looks hot as hell on you, but not for me! I’m too pale w/ blue eyes. I think this color would go best with a darker skin tone & brown eyes.

Amanda Avatar

SO SO disappointed! There’s nothing unique about this color at all and it looks nothing like the promo pics. I should have listened to my gut with how low-quality MAC has been lately and the fact that I don’t look good in some purples (exactly this weak grape juice purple), but I just love Azealia and the promo photos so much I ordered the first day. Not sure I will keep this. Bummed 🙁

Rae // theNotice Avatar

Ooh, it’s so purple! *flails* Shame about the uneven finish, though — I had expected an amplified cream to be more opaque and more matte, but perhaps it’s just my monitor.

(There no excuse for patchiness, though! No matter how pretty the shade :P)

layla Avatar

im gonna WEAR MINE WITH SMOKED PURPLE…AND CHECK OUT REVLON LUSTROUS LIPSTICK IN BLACK CHERRY….ITS JUST AS NICE OR MAC NIGHT VIOLET MATTENE AND PUT THIS OVER IT….YEAH!

Megan Avatar

Well, the color of it is pretty but I don’t think I’ll buy this shade. The smoked purple swatch you showed above, do you have a full review on that shade?

Riana Avatar

Argh, not at all what I was hoping it would look like (or what has been advertised as Azealia wearing) I’ll see how I like it when it gets to me but then probably return it.

Boo.

**Please note, I only cite Cyber as you stated Smoked Purple is exact same as Cyber and I have the latter already** Kind of looks like these three colours are almost identical.
