MAC Frank-n-Furter Lipstick ($17.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “deep raspberry wine [with a Matte finish].” It’s a deepened red with subtle, cool undertones with a matte finish. I don’t get raspberry/wine vibes from it (not even in the tube). It had mostly opaque color coverage with a lightly creamy consistency that allowed the color to go on evenly and smoothly. This color wore well for six and a half hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. I didn’t have any feathering/bleeding with this shade, but I’m not prone to either. Chanel La Desiree (327) (LE, $34.00) is similar. MAC Just a Bite (LE, $16.00) is less matte. NARS Mascate (P, $26.00) is slightly darker. MAC Such Flare (LE, $16.00) is warmer. MAC MAC Red (P, $16.00) is lighter, cooler-toned. MAC Charmed, I’m Sure (LE, $16.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Oblivion Lipstick ($17.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “vivid bluish-red [with an Amplified finish].” It’s a medium, brightened red with a luminous sheen and neutral-to-cool undertones. I can barely detect the blue undertones, as it just looks warm-toned against my complexion. It’s only when I swatched it against more strongly blue- and orange-toned lipsticks that it seemed to look cooler. It was creamy, easy to apply, and lasted for six and a half hours on me. It was lightly hydrating and didn’t feather or bleed outside the edges of my lip line. Guerlain Red Hot (328) (P, $37.00) is darker, more muted. MAC Ruby (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Too Faced Melted Ruby (P, $21.00) is similar. Estee Lauder Vengeful Red (P, $30.00) is similar. Anna Sui Minnie Mouse (01) (LE) is warmer. Edward Bess Eternal Passion (P, $32.00) is similar. Maybelline On Fire Red (P, $7.49) is slightly cooler-toned, brighter. Buxom Scoundrel (P, $21.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Sin Lipstick ($17.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “deep dark blue red [with a Matte finish].” It’s a dark, burgundy-red with subtle cool, fuchsia-ish undertones with a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color payoff, though it is buildable to fully opaque color. I think it is only when you try one of MAC’s original Matte formulas and then immediately try one of their newer shades that you can appreciate the improvements they’ve made. The texture of this is much drier, so it does drag and tug on the lips somewhat. It was a bit drying over time, though the color lasted for over seven hours. NARS Ingrid (P, $32.00) is glossier. NARS Liv (P, $32.00) is cooler-toned, glossier. Kat Von D Motorhead (P, $21.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Talk That Talk (LE, $16.00) is is cooler-toned. MAC Soulfully Rich (P, $18.00) is darker, cooler-toned. MAC Endless Drama (P, $18.00) is less matte. MAC Prince Noir (LE, $16.00) is darker, cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Strange Journey Lipstick ($17.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “yellowish brick red [with a Matte finish].” It’s a brightened, orange-red with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had really good color payoff, and the texture was creamy and glided on beautifully (creamiest of the four). The color stayed on well for six hours and left a stain behind. It was neither drying nor hydrating. Bobbi Brown Lady Ruba (P, $26.00) is lighter. NARS Carmen (P, $32.00) is redder. NARS Marlene (P, $32.00) is similar. NARS Rita (P, $32.00) is darker, redder. NARS Annabella (P, $32.00) is brighter. MAC Dangerous (P, $16.00) is more matte. MAC Scarlet Ibis (LE, $16.00) is more matte, darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

P.S. — These are supposed to launch online on September 29th and in-stores on October 2nd (MAC Stores only).

Hi Christine I have a question not about this lipstick. I wanted to know really badly what blushes you were wearing for the video some years ago on the MAC In Extra Dimension Collection Swatches. I think it was about the superb highlighter.

valentine Avatar

just brought oblivion home only to find on fire red from Maybelline dusting on my shelf is the exact dupe. I was able to line the upper and lower lip with the two shades and couldn’t tell the difference!! strange journey seems to be the perfect muted matte orange that is pastel yet brick yet bright all in one… hard to believe the dupes can touch this. Both are still available on MAc on 22 Street and 6 or bradway is in in NYC.

Dusty Avatar

I like Frank-N-Furter but when I compare it side by side in the swatch gallery (thank you for that feature cause it’s AWESOME) it does look SO similar to MAC Red that they could easily pass for one another. You might notice if they were side by side on identical twins but that doesn’t often happen so… yea. I ADORE Sin but I always have and it’s been available for eons! I’ve been using it for at least 5 or 6 years and it wasn’t new when I started. That last one is beautiful on you but you always rock those orange reds like nobody else! It looks so summery and pretty!

Rachel Avatar

oh my gosh…i need one of these, more so for the packaging/rhps factor than the colors themselves. sin looks like the only one i don’t have a dupe for but i’m worried that it might be too dry for me. they’re all gorgeous though, this might be a tough decision!

Sandra Avatar

Indi flick from NYX is definitely the dupe of Stange Journey. Can you tell me why you like Oblivion more that Frank-n- Further? I absolutely love this line, the colors are easy to find in other brands But I am in LOVE with the package!
XOX from Colombia 🙂

Sandra Avatar

Thank you Christine, I have to bough my make up on line (we have a MAC store but not everything arrives here) so I am like a loony reading reviews. You are always very helpful 🙂

I personally didn’t like the movie, but I wouldn’t let something like that stop me from buying a good lipstick! Although nothing here is piquing my interest (one or two reds are enough for me), I’m glad to see that MAC’s last few product releases seem to have increased in the quality department. I was getting a little frustrated earlier this year when everything that came out seemed to be really shoddy.

Laura_Lou Avatar

Frank-n-furter looks like my perfect red. Not too bright, not too dark, nice tool tones…might have to check this one out when it’s released over here in the UK x

Gloria Avatar

I’ve been obsessed with RHPS since I can remember, so I *have* to have one of these. I wonder how Strange Journey compares with Bite Beauty’s Lip Cashmere in Sherry. I really like Strange Journey but if I already have a dupe of it, I might as well get one of the others.

Arielle Avatar

Oh wow Frank-n-furter and Oblivion look really good. I’m a little sad that for many people these are easily dupable shades, but for a newbie like me they’re great starter additions to my stash. It also helps I love the movie haha

Nicola Avatar

I’m not sure which one I’m going to get. Strange Journey is my least favourite and I already own Viva Glam 1 and Riri Woo, are Frank’n’Furter or Oblivion similar to those? My online problem with sin is, that it might be to dark for my taste since I hated Talk That Talk on my NW18/NC20 skintone… Which one do you think is the most original? 🙂

Christine Avatar

I don’t think VG1 is like these, but RiRi Woo is going to be somewhat similar to Frank-n-Furter!

If you don’t like Talk That Talk, you won’t like Sin on you, IMO. To be honest, I really don’t think any of these are that original, but Oblivion is closer to neutral, so it will be more a chameleon (leaning cooler or warmer depending on what you’re wearing and your undertones).

Quinctia Avatar

…I hope the launch around these isn’t too insane. I’ve NEVER bought an LE Mac product, but I’d really like to pick something up from this for my sister’s birthday–it’s her favorite movie. And if the counters aren’t getting it, I’d have to order it. 🙁

Elise Avatar

They look lovely on you! i would only buy these lippies for the packaging because I love the film~ these reds are very dupoable, wish there were more unique shades. I wish there more lippies like Sin that were A+ quality… =]

Hex Avatar

I thought I’d be into Frank-N-Furter and that i would just wait and get Sin from the permanent range. But I already have Marilyn Monroe Charmed I’m Sure and I guess you’re saying it’s similar. And the swatches look like exactly the same too! I’m only into Matte colours so those were the only 2 that appealed to me and Strange Journey is too orange for me. Guess I’ll just go with Sin. I do really like the packaging 🙂 Sin it is! Been wanting it for a long time anyway

Shea Avatar

I don’t care if any of these are similar to any I have, they are all fantastic. I’ve been performing in a Rocky Horror shadow cast for about a year and a half now and I am determined to get at least one of them.

Ginny Avatar

They should be more vampy! I was hoping Frank n furter would be the raspberry it said it was. It might look deeper and vampy on me anyway since I’m pale. I think it looks great on you! I’m 100% in for FnF and Sin.

Thelma Talbert Avatar

So glad I saw this review. Earlier I saw a description of Frank -n-Furter as being a deep raspberry and I was planning to get i After seeing this review. Ithink I will pass. I currrently own eight Mac red lippies. That’s enough for a while. The Frank -N-Furter lipstick was the only thing I wanted. I’ll just wait for MAC’s next collection.

Olivia Avatar

I NEED SIN!! So these won’t be at counters, only in store? 🙁

I think a lot of MAC’s demographic will be turned off by this, which means maybe I can get one!

Rachel R. Avatar

These are all gorgeous, but nothing special to me. Strange journey is another “too orange” for me. I don’t know what I expected exactly, but this isn’t it.

Justine Avatar

I was excited for this because they looked so nice but seeing the swatches made me realize how dupable they are. I’m pretty sure WnW’s Stoplight Red is very similar to Oblivion. Kinda dissapointed, oh well.

gabis Avatar

I only like Frank-n-Furter lipstick and even so it miles away from being a must-have.
Sin is pratically Diva with a Rocky Horror sticker on the tube. And what about Strange Journey? Jeez, it looks identical to the one they are currently releasing for the Brooke Shields collection..

Melinda Avatar

I’m sorry to ask yet another Diva comparison question..but, how does it compare to Sin? In terms of color because I can see that Sin is drier. When I google MAC matte lipsticks, I see them swatched side by side and they look nearly identical, but I was just wondering what you thought. Thx!

Alana Avatar

I’m not very happy about the fact that Mac has put some pretty dupable lipsticks in a collection AGAIN, but I’ve never seen the movie so maybe these colors are what they’re going for. Even then, why does Mac have to keep recycling colors (such as Sin) that are already permanent? If its repromoted I can understand, but I don’t think its a good representation of Mac (or any make up company) to just keep throwing in products that are already in the permanent line and increase the price on top of it for the packaging. A limited edition collection is opportunity to get creative and come up with different products for that line, but they just go the easy way out and bring up the same stuff over and over again as if we won’t notice.

gabis Avatar

I totally agree but see the reason they keep on doing it is because it’s the easiest way to make money. Label whatever as “limited edition” and you will see how desperate people get. The appeal of LEs on consumers is unbelievable.
And because of that not matter how repetitive, dupable or lame some of these LEs are people always find a reason or excuse to buy it. Whether is because they identify themselves with the theme or because it’s a collector’s item, there is always something. Meanwhile questions like real necessity and affordability are ignored.

Jahzara Avatar

OMG, I don’t know which to choose, and I can only choose one cause I’m already will be getting 4 lipsticks of the The Matte Collection. Frank furter, Oblivion or Strange journey? Don”t know 🙁
They are all pretty !

Helene Avatar

I like all of these!
I do think the chances of getting one is slim as it’s in store and online. Online tends to sell out so fast.
I do have dupes or close enough for all but Sin, so I hope I can get it. It would be fun to have a lipstick from this LE for the packaging.

Brandy Avatar

The online release is tomorrow, right? I’ve been waiting for this line since I heard about it about a month ago (that was just when it was whispers ) I do like the line, but to be honest, for such a wild and diverse movie, you’d think there’d be more variety. Hello? Magenta? Columbia? They were all but forgotten! And they missed a genuine opportunity to name something “dammit Janet!” LOL

Sylirael Avatar

Frank-n-Furter and Oblivion are beautiful reds! The finish also looks really smooth and satiny, which is lovely! I have to admit, I’m also kind of attracted to Strange Journey (given my current sideline-focus on oranges). I like how it has a nice balance of yellow and red to it.

I see what people mean about the packaging being less…exciting than one might hope for with a special RHPS release, but then I’ve always had trouble seeing past MAC’s ‘tampon’ lipstick case anyway, LOL! It takes something like the Alluring Aquatic or those new table-leg ones to snap me out of it! ;-D

Danielle Avatar

I really want Frank-n-Furter and Oblivion. I don’t usually wear red lipstick, but they are super pretty and I love the rhps. I may get strange journey, but idk if I can pull of something that orange. Can’t wait for the 2nd though.

Trina Avatar

Hi
I’m hoping you have some better info than what I’m getting. Which is no information. What’s going on with this collection. Its 3pm EST and still no collection. I called and they said they don’t know. To check my email and we know that isn’t reliable. it’s just very frustrating because people have lives, jobs, children, & responsibilities. it almost makes you want to not buy at all because it’s not worth the trouble. I’m hoping you can get a better answer from mac.
Thanks

Trina Avatar

They wouldn’t even give me a date. She said maybe later tonight or tomorrow. Or it might get pushed back more. I don’t think they know what they want to do. I know they don’t give a time but darn at least pick a day.
Thanks for checking. I just can’t keep going without sleep just for makeup lol. The things we do for LE stuff.

Tammie Avatar

I am itching to get Frank-n-Furter and Oblivion but I’ve been refreshing the darn MAC page all day and nothing yet! So frustrating, I am at work I don’t have time for this and it will probably go up at some random time when I am running errands or something grr! I did a live chat with their CS people earlier and nobody would say anything, they wouldn’t even give me a yes or a no that it’s even coming out today! What gives 🙁

Tammie Avatar

No worries, I was just venting because their CS was being weird, and I don’t understand their timing. I just thought it was really odd that they refused to even confirm that it is coming out on the 29th like they already stated :/

Melissa Avatar

I love RHPS and I think the packaging is spot on but if I’m being honest, I have enough lipstick to last me the rest of my life so I especially can’t justify a purchase when all the colors are so close to what I already have. 🙁

Dani Avatar

I just got strange journey and oblivion today! I think another possible dupe in imo for oblivion would be the latest Rihanna viva glam lipstick from this year. I never thought about it before I bought oblivion but when I compared them today they were pretty much the same 🙁 either way they are both nice but just a heads up for anyone who already has the viva glam one.

Melle Avatar

I’m a bit late to this party, but I love RHPS and I was able to purchase “Oblivion”. This collection sold out like lightening in the MAC Pro stores in my city. I knew that it would be difficult to get even one lipstick, so I just decided to get whatever was left…if anything was left at all. Luckily, I got a shade that I wanted. 🙂 Great photos, Christine!! Oblivion looks fabulous on you!

Rachel Avatar

Revlon’s Matte Balm in Standout is a perfect dupe for FrankNFurter! I swatched them together and tried to find any miniscule difference and there was none.

Paulina Avatar

Thank you, Christine! To be honest, I had no idea that I could search for any side-by-side swatches I want (well, almost any ;>), although I read your posts regularly… Well, you have now officially changed by life! 🙂 That’s a fantastic tool that could stop be buying different lipsticks/eyeshadows in the same shade over and over again 🙂

Rebecca Avatar

So gutted! I’m from the UK and was so excited for this. In the space of twenty minutes and before MAC put the link on the Facebook site everything worth having was gone! I really wanted two of the lipsticks and a nail varnish!
