MAC x Proenza Schouler Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches
MAC x Proenza Schouler Lipsticks
MAC x Proenza Schouler Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.10 oz.) come in four, limited edition shades. The collection launches online on April 21st and in-stores on April 24th. Each lipstick is housed in metallic, square tubes.
Mangrove is described as a “bright clean orange-red [with a Matte finish].” It’s a brightened, medium coral-red with warm, orange undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had rich, opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly without dragging or tugging at the lip during application. This shade wore well for six hours and left a stain behind, though it was just slightly drying. MAC Dangerous (P, $16.00) is darker. MAC Rozz (LE, $16.00) is redder. MAC Scarlet Ibis (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Lady Danger (P, $16.00) is darker, more orange. Hourglass Muse (P, $28.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Pinkfringe is described as a “vivid flamingo pink [with a Satin finish].” It’s a brightened, light-medium pink with subtle neutral-to-warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had mostly opaque color payoff, and the texture was very creamy and emollient, so it did create “lines” if you pressed your lips together. The color wore well for four hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. YSL Fetish Pink (8) (P, $34.00) is less shimmery, a little lighter. MAC What a Feeling! (LE, $20.00) is sheerer. Too Faced Razzle Dazzle Rose (P, $21.00) is sheerer. Maybelline Pink Pop (P, $7.49) is cooler-toned, less shimmery. MAC Divine Choice (P, $22.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Primrose is described as a “sheer berry plum [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a medium-dark, cool-toned berry plum with a glossy shine. It had semi-opaque color coverage that applied somewhat unevenly with a little settling of the color into lip lines. As the color wore away, it did seem to migrate and settle more into the lip lines. It managed to wear four hours and left a stain behind, which is quite long for a Lustre finish, and it wasn’t drying. Inglot #293 Lipstick Cream (P, $12.00) is more opaque. YSL Forbidden Burgundy (12) (P, $34.00) is brighter.Marc Jacobs Beauty Seduce Me (128) (P, $30.00) is lighter, brighter. Urban Decay Venom (P, $22.00) is more shimmery. MAC Rebel (P, $16.00) is slightly cooler-toned, less glossy. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Woodrose is described as a “light pink with beige [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a light beige with a rosy tint and a soft shine. It had mostly opaque pigmentation, though Lustres are a sheerer range, so it is unusually opaque. The consistency was creamy with enough slip to apply without tugging, and it applied evenly the most part. It wore well for three and a half hours and was a little drying. MAC Pure Pout (P, $22.00) is warmer. Maybelline Blushing Beige (915) (P, $7.49) is not quite as pink. MAC Innocence Beware (LE, $16.00) is slightly cooler-toned. MAC Crème d’Nude (P, $16.00) is slightly warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Yes, I’m almost relieved the two lipsticks colours that interst me from this collaboration are Lustre finish..which to me is a pffffttt pass formula. So many lipsticks already this spring..
Haha! You and me both. They seem really popular, but I don’t like them 🙁
Orange-reds aren’t usually my thing, but Mangrove looks so tempting! It looks really good on you Christine!
Aww, thank you!
mangrove is pretty!
It is!
All of these look great! Mangrove is really calling to me, but I already have so many shades that are similar. I’m trying to resist haha.
You can resist!
Christine, how close to Boyfriend Stealer is Primrose? I am LOVING Mangrove! <3
Boyfriend Stealer is purpler on me!
Also, you can actually compare any two shades I’ve swatched before here: http://www.temptalia.com/swatch-gallery — just enter the two you’re looking for, and it’ll pull up swatches for both. If you think they’re dupes, you can even submit them right there 🙂 I’m happy to give you my insight any time, but I’m also trying to spread the word that this feature exists, too!
Hello! Lovely pics:) do you think Mangrove is a dupe for Toxic Tale?
I tried to do comp pics with your feature but the pic for Toxic Tale does not come up!
Thanks:)
Toxic Tale is less orange, more of a coral! 🙂
Just sayin… Wood rose is totes your nude! 🙂 You make that one look really good!
Thank you!
Oh no, I want them all :/. I’m really into springy type colours atm, so pinkfringe is right up my alley. As is primrose, it just looks so slick. It’ll be nice over currant liner! Ahh can’t wait, love your swatches 😀
I love Primrose and Mangrove – fortunately for my wallet, I am not a fan of MACs lipstick formula.
I have to say (once again) I cannot believe how cheap and ugly the packaging for this collection looks. It’s like a horrible powerpoint slideshow background from 1997.
Ah, lucky wallet!
Agreed. It looks really bad
Mangrove shall belong to me! Sad to see Primrose was so uneven as that is the one that I was most interested in. Thanks for the reviews Christine!
Happy to share, Janelle! 🙂
Love your swatch gallery! But I could only find the liquid lipstick version of Hourglass’s Muse, and I was wondering how the tube version of Muse compares to Mangrove (Sorry if that’s a silly question, but I remember the tube form appearing different from the liquid form)? Thanks Christine!
Hi Miki,
Sorry, I don’t have the tube version, so I don’t know what it looks like!
Do you like this collection more than the Playland collection that is coming out? Out of this collection all that really interested me is Mangrove and I definitely want Toying Around from the Playland collection.
I have only seen half of it, so it seems unfair to rule it out! I’m not really in love with either collection – I think they feel incomplete to me. The lipsticks in Playland are fun in general but rather dupable!
I was super excited about Woodrose, it really looked like the perfect pale nude. I loved that it was a lustre becuse I think nudes look better and more natural when some of my natural lip color shines through. Unfortunately it’s way too opaque for a typical lustre, so it’s a definite pass for me. 🙁
I thought of you with that shade! I was thinking it was too opaque. The irony of it all – while I don’t like the sheerness of Lustres… that is kind of the point of them.
Woodrose looks like a nice nude, but I’m not really feeling any of them enough for $22.
They are pricey 🙁
Morning Christine (well morning here)
Do you happen to have any information about it’s availability in México or internationally?
Thanks.
I think I need Mangrove and possible Pinkfringe but mostly Ocean City, I’m waiting for your review tho xD. <3
MAC just listed April 2014 for international, but I don’t have any specifics!
Mangrove is so lovely on you!!!!
Other than that color…these seem so ….ordinary…or at least dupable. Am I wrong?
They’re fairly dupable!
Woodrose looks beautiful on you, I need to try this with White Russian by Buxon overtop
Sounds like a pretty combo!
Pinkfringe and Woodrose are my favorites, but they all seem pretty dupable.
They do – surprisingly!
Thank heavens for you and your comparison swatches, Christine! I loved the look of Woodrose but I already have Creme d’Nude, and Primrose is nice but I have Rebel. So yay for you! 🙂 By the way, they all look divine on you but Woodrose really compliments your skin tone x
So glad I could help, Ella! 🙂
Thank you!
Woodrose looks very similar to Fluer d’ coral to me. Are they dupes?
Fleur d’Coral is definitely very similar! I would say it runs a little warmer, a smidgen brighter.
Shame about how Primrose was streaky and settled into lip lines, because the color is so lovely! Oh well, UD Venom beckons.
Venom is soo much better!
Mangrove is nice, but mostly I’m glad that I think I can pass these by.
They are more dupable, unfortunately! 🙁
I’m not sure I’ll actually buy anything from this collection but can I just say that this is probably the first time in a long while that MAC has released a collection where almost every colour would suit cool toned skin better than warmer skin tones. I’m a little jealous though 🙂
That’s very true, Rad! It’s hard to find really cool-toned collections.
I wouldn’t call this an overtly cool-toned collection when it contains shades like Mangrove and Pinkfringe. Not that somebody with my skin tone (NW10) couldn’t pull off shades like that, but I’d say it’s more like a well balanced collection than and overtly cool-toned one.
Hm, it’s a shame Woodrose is a bit drying…it actually looks like a pink enough nude that I might have been able to wear it! But drying is really a terrible thing for me, as my lips run dry anyway 🙁
Primrose looked promising too, but it’s a bit patchy, and I have Venom already 😉
Lustres usually are drying on me, unfortunately! Have you tried the Lustre finish before? Some love it and find it hydrating!
I got really carried away with the pretty packaging and the colours (Primrose and Mangrove called out to my inner being) …. then I saw the price. What is MAC’s justification for selling these for $22? Are we really paying $6 more for the packaging? I was going to get each lipstick but now I’m going to have to rearrange my priorities lol. I love MAC lipsticks but I’m not sure I love ’em THAT much! lol.
Packaging 🙁
I think that rainbow ombré would look so much better on the standard MAC bullet tube instead of a *square*.
*Sigh!* At least the blushes aren’t priced up more than they would be for a LE collection so I will definitely try to grab one or both. I really love the packaging though…. *decisions decisions*
I love Mangrove and Woodrose, but agh….the packaging. I mean, the colors are gorgeous, but what were they thinking with the word placement? Think how much sleeker and balanced that tube would look if the writing ran vertical instead of horizontal. I might take a stab at Woodrose if I stumble upon it in stores, but it’s not a collection that inspires me to go running after it.
Must be part of the Proenza Schouler aesthetic, I guess! 🙁
They can keep Primrose, very disappointing. Mangrove looked very pretty on you, Christine.
Thank you, MizLottie! 🙂
Mangrove and Pinkfringe are so beautiful!
On another note, 10oz is the regular size yes, as in the regular tubes?
The Proenza packaging said 0.10 oz. for the size of these!
I don’t usually go for colors like Mangrove but it looks mighty sexy on you! I just might end up with it lol. I don’t think I’ll be able to live with myself if I pass lol
Aww, thank you, Fancie! I bet it’ll be gorgeous on you!
I like a few of the colors, and i love the packaging. Although its not high on my wishlist at all, and i feel like the packaging would be mega annoying to store witht he other mac lipsticks
I have a lot of the various tubes MAC has released, and they can be. The square tubes aren’t so bad, though.
The products look so flattering on you, Christine! I can only hope that I can pull them off as well as you. :))
I bet you’ll look even better!
I really like Primrose and Woodrose.
Yay 🙂
What a coincidence that on my science test today there was a question about mangrove swamp biomes… But anyway, could you please tell me which is the darkest out of Blushing Beige, Pure Pout and Woodrose?
Pure Pout seems the darkest, but it isn’t as opaque as Woodrose, so I feel like Woodrose almost looks darker applied.
omg! Mangrose and Woodrose are absolutely stunning! Must-haves and the packaging is absolutely divine!
Yay! Someone likes the packaging 🙂
Mangrove is gorgeous! Not quite unique though. Props on the unique packaging!!
It is a lovely shade!
I’m surprised by how much I like all of these. I’ll have to check them out when they launch here.
Which one do you like the most?
Darn! I was really hoping Primrose would have better results! I’ll definitely buy Mangrove though; the color is gorgeous!
Aww! Sorry to burst your bubble 🙁
How would you say Mangrove compares to MAC Ablaze lippie? Are they even close? Thanks!
Ablaze is lighter on me!
http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=163043&dupe=106930
Thanks. I love Ablaze, but that waxy texture is the worst. Wow-I’d not found that side by side comparison tool-I have a similar enough coloring that your examples are like I’m trying the product on myself! Thank for all you do!
No problem! You can access it at http://www.temptalia.com/swatch-gallery! 🙂 Just start typing the shade name (if it’s SUPER common like “red” you might try “mac red” instead) and select. “Get swatches” and you’re there!
Mangrove is hands down the best lipstick shade form the collection.. <3
It’s such a nice shade!
I really wanted Primrose to be opaque (sp?) My wallet is happy that it’s on the sheer side, though. I’ll not buy it. Mangrove on the other hand looks very interesting. I love Lady Danger, Mangrove is a bit like a younger sister, and would look really good on a sunny early summer day. It’s a must try in person for me. Strange, I usually don’t like the warm colours on my lips, but lately I love to one day go with Up the Amp or heroine and the next use Lady Danger.
Lipsticks are so much fun!
Your lipstick choices are so on point, Helene!
It’s funny, I went in to see Pinkfringe but walked out with Mangrove and the matching liner. I wore it that night and look out did I get some attention. Also, I must agree Christine that Dynamo is awesome as well.
How funny! 😉
How does Pinkfridge compare with MAC Angel and MAC Dreaminess? 🙂
Angel and Dreaminess are almost gray-ish in comparison – cooler-toned, not as bright.
love Mangrove..ordered that and ocean city blush 🙂
Yay!! Hope you’re well, Gigi! xoxo
I dunno I like the packaging but none of these lipsticks are doing it for me :/ especially not at that price point! I’m waiting for the blushes to get my compact fix 🙂
Hopefully that’ll work out!
I think Primrose is probably similar to Musky Amethyst (released with the MAC Semi-Precious Collection) and to Nyx Violet Ray Round Lipstick. Am I right, Christine?
Hey Adriana!
Musky Amethyst is a bit more muted… like there is an overcast sky over it, lol! Violet Ray definitely seems a lot closer 🙂
How does Mangrove compare to Tom Ford’s Wild Ginger lipstick? 🙂
Great watches!!!!!!
I meant swatches :p
I don’t think I have Wild Ginger… can’t remember for sure and trusty Google didn’t show a result for me (on my site), lol!
