MAC Free as a Butterfly Lipstick
MAC Free as a Butterfly Lipstick ($17.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “semi-sheer golden nude [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a light golden beige with a frosted sheen. The Lustre finish is a sheerer formula, and indeed, it is sheer, though it seemed a bit sheerer than the average Lustre. It lightens my natural lip color and adds a lot of shimmer/sheen. The color lasts for two hours and is drying over time (the latter is something I generally experience with Lustres). Too Faced Shimmering Naked Dolly (LE, $22.00) is more shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Solar Gold (LE, $49.00) is warmer. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Hollywood (P, $18.00) is more pigmented. MAC You’ve Got It (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Pet Me Please (LE, $16.00) is less golden. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Royal Ball Lipstick ($17.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “fleshy pink [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a light-medium, neutral-to-warm-toned pink with a frosted finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff that applied fairly evenly, but the color pulled into lip lines as it wore. The payoff was more than most Lustres. It lasted almost three hours on me, but it was drying and thin enough that it felt clingy the whole time. Too Faced Shimmering Marshmallow Bunny (LE, $22.00) is darker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Pleasure Model (P, $18.00) is similar. Guerlain Gabrielle (P, $51.00) is glossier. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Both “meh” for me, but I do think the packaging is sweet.
The softer colors make sense to me, but I think they could have still included one bolder shade or at least a Cremesheen finish!
I wouldn’t want a “bold” color in the cinderella collection (not a red or a fuscia) but I’d like a light pink that actually had color to it!
Not impressed. I have one Lustre lipstick in Lovelorn and it’s way more pigmented than these.
Lovelorn is one of the better Lustres out there compared to most I’ve tried.
Royal Ball instantly reminded me of MAC Hue.
I could see some similarity!
Hmmm nope, not getting a very princessy feel from these… Then again, Else from Frozen might look good in these frosty shades 😉
Maybe with the gloss!
I kind of like Royal Ball but I think it would wash me out.
I could see it doing that on some!
I wish they did a nice cremesheen or matte nude lipstick with this line, instead of these! I love the lipstick tubes and want to add one to my collection but these shades just aren’t doing it for me! 🙁
Cremesheen could have worked here!
Wow! I liked the packaging but these are pathetic. How unfortunate.
Bummer!
Man, those look boring. Haha!
They are simple shades for sure.
Ooh! I will get them both only because I don’t have any color like them in my hoarder stash and I can get away with these tqo by adding lip gloss. Plus I like the packaging.
Enjoy!
Royal Ball is much lighter than I thought!
They’re both quite light!
I’m not feeling this lipsticks. They are too sheer for my taste.
If I buy it I think I will buy only the Royal ball lipstick just for the packaging (lol) and the blue glitter lipglass. Maybe it will look better with the lipglass.
I never tried blue glittered lipglasses before, hope it’s nice.
OR… I will not buy and just buy from the collection that are coming in March lol
I wish they had done Creemsheens (even though I’m not a huge fan of that finish, lol).
Frost bomb. Both are pass for me. I should have guessed that the Luster formula on these wouldn’t preform. 🙁
Right? As soon as I saw they were Lustres, I knew what I was in for.
What the heck!!! No! This is not what i thought they were going to be like
As soon as I saw they were Lustres, they were exactly as I expected :/
Free as a Butterfly was what I was looking forward to the most out of this whole collection because it looked like a nice nude and the name is very pretty, but the lipstick itself is not that hot. It’s SO sheer, and I despise the lustre formula. I’m probably going to get it anyway because I was obsessed with Cinderella as a kid. Fingers crossed that the other products in this line aren’t as disappointing!
I’m not a fan of Lustres either!
Really underwhelming. That top one I can’t even see. It looks like you’ve got nothing on. It wouldnt even be good for a top coat on another lipstick.
They have such a thin texture, I don’t think they’re good over other products.
Whew..my wallet is breathing a sigh of relief! Kinda bummed as they look pretty in the swatches and tube!
Phew!
I wanted to get one for the packaging, but I just can’t justify the price for an invisible lipstick I know I’m never going to wear…
Wow, these are super disappointing. I do not see these being especially flattering on women of color or anyone with really pigmented lips. I was hoping Royal Ball would be more pigmented because it looks so pretty in the tube. Even with the pretty packaging, these are a pass for me!
Hmmm, I think I might still go for Royal Ball but I might have to see it in person.
Well, these are boring, and the lustre finish isn’t doing anything for me. I wish they would have done something a bit more interesting with the Cinderella theme.
How disappointing! I was expecting these to be on the sheer side but (as ridiculous as it sounds) was still planning on purchasing both shades solely for the Cinderella label. But, for me anyway, the frosty finish is an absolute no go, and I won’t be purchasing either of these shades because of that. There was so much potential for this collection, but I guess MAC knows regardless of the quality of the product, people will purchase regardless for the Cinderella label.
Meh, nothing special. Might look better layered over another lipstick, or under a gloss. I like they eye look you did !
Sigh again, Mac.
Christine, how much Parure Gold do you have saved up? I hate that I can’t buy it!
LOL! I actually have two or three bottles. Takes forever to get through them!
I really love the packaging!
Royal Ball is very princessy to me, I like it!
Way too light.
I think it’s so funny – I must be one of the only people that likes the Lustre finish. Syrup and Capricious are my two favorite MAC lipsticks. That being said, I feel good skipping both of these. Not a fan of the colors. I’ll stick to the pigments and the palette so I can replicate your eye look!
Seriously….what’s wrong with MAC? My favourite company… very disappointing 🙁
I actually really like both of the shades on you, Christine! It’s a delicate, light look without being too much. In my eyes, at least 🙂
Gosh !!! I love the name Free as a butterfly but why …. and the packaging too sweet. Mac, why you do this to me.
In an odd ‘fantasy’ way both of them appeal to me… but they also don’t. I am conflicted ^_^ Royal ball looks so gorgeous in the bullet though, with that irregular glitter sheen over the surface
The many reasons to read your blog before purchase and if the purchase is not possible then it was not meant to be.
Did Cinderella really wore such clear lip lipsticks.. 😛 .. Umm.. no for me.. but if there had been any soft pinks I would have liked it better 🙂
I love, love the packaging. I’m a sucker for special edition Mac lipsticks… but I can’t justify getting one ONLY because of the packaging, so sadly I think I’ll pass on this one. MEH.
Just not my kind of colors. I’m not sure there is such a thing as a Cinderella-type color that would suit me, though!
This is disappointing!! I so wanted one of these to be amazing.
I feel the need to buy both of these just for the packaging…I’m a sucker for cute packaging, the secret’s out 😛 Although both of the shades look like ones I would definitely use often!
Lol they look like tinted lip balms. Pretty packaging but a waste.
What boring lip colors, and I am a lip fiend.
Mac, why do you even bother with these shades?? So.many dupes for these! Repeats of repeats…
Thanks for posting these Christine. You are lovely as always, even in these boring shades.
They are so boring, but the packaging is adorable. I will not buy these
Ugh, if only these were not Lustres! Or so terribly pale! I seriously do NOT think I could pull off these two shades to save my life. They ought to have included at least one shade that had some color and substance.
Love the packaging !
Hi christine! May i ask what shade of foundation do you use? For future references before i buy the products you review.

How does Free as a Butterfly compare to Secret Lover from the MAC Me Over collection from years ago?

First of all, I love your webpage. I use it frequently.
The Royal Ball lipstick is really pretty and looks great on you.
Unrelated to you or your website. Is anyone else annoyed that so many people bought large quantities of the Mac Cinderella line causing it to be sold out in a very short period of time? I don’t know. I just think it is inconsiderate.
I don’t know if it’s just people buy lots of the same shade – but just a lot of people, period 🙁 And not enough to go around.
I’m not a huge fan of the collection as a whole as I think there was so much more room for creativity. But, as a true MAC addict, I think I’ll pick up Royal Ball when it hits stores tomorrow just for the packaging alone haha.
Enjoy Royal Ball 🙂
I ended up buying free as a butterfly today and I love it it reminds me of siren song but more beige n gold the other lipstick was sold out but idc I prefer this one anyway its gorgeous and typically im not a fan of lustres other than capricious.
Happy you love it, Ms. D!
It’s hard not to still want Royal Ball. Even when u say u don’t like something, the pics u take make them look great. Lol
Aww!
I have the Cinderella Free As A Butterfly lipstick and I absolutely love it but it’s definitely more for some moisture and tint to my natural shade, just like you said. I totally see why people would not like this that much because it all depends on your skin and lip tone. I am a MAC lipstick addict and since I don’t want to purchase one for like $50 on amazon, I typed in google “mac cinderella lipstick descriptions” and your blog came up. Probably the best find ever!!! I am always looking for limited edition MAC lipsticks that they duplicate in their regular line. So thank you for this blog and keep it up I love it !!! And I agree, both shades look great on you!
Glad you’re loving them, Rachael! ;D
