MAC Free as a Butterfly Lipstick
MAC Free as a Butterfly Lipstick

MAC Free as a Butterfly Lipstick ($17.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “semi-sheer golden nude [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a light golden beige with a frosted sheen. The Lustre finish is a sheerer formula, and indeed, it is sheer, though it seemed a bit sheerer than the average Lustre. It lightens my natural lip color and adds a lot of shimmer/sheen. The color lasts for two hours and is drying over time (the latter is something I generally experience with Lustres). Too Faced Shimmering Naked Dolly (LE, $22.00) is more shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Solar Gold (LE, $49.00) is warmer. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Hollywood (P, $18.00) is more pigmented. MAC You’ve Got It (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Pet Me Please (LE, $16.00) is less golden. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

MAC Royal Ball Lipstick ($17.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “fleshy pink [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a light-medium, neutral-to-warm-toned pink with a frosted finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff that applied fairly evenly, but the color pulled into lip lines as it wore. The payoff was more than most Lustres. It lasted almost three hours on me, but it was drying and thin enough that it felt clingy the whole time. Too Faced Shimmering Marshmallow Bunny (LE, $22.00) is darker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Pleasure Model (P, $18.00) is similar. Guerlain Gabrielle (P, $51.00) is glossier. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I wish they did a nice cremesheen or matte nude lipstick with this line, instead of these! I love the lipstick tubes and want to add one to my collection but these shades just aren’t doing it for me! 🙁

LipstickHoarder Avatar

Ooh! I will get them both only because I don’t have any color like them in my hoarder stash and I can get away with these tqo by adding lip gloss. Plus I like the packaging.

Marvienne Avatar

I’m not feeling this lipsticks. They are too sheer for my taste.
If I buy it I think I will buy only the Royal ball lipstick just for the packaging (lol) and the blue glitter lipglass. Maybe it will look better with the lipglass.
I never tried blue glittered lipglasses before, hope it’s nice.

OR… I will not buy and just buy from the collection that are coming in March lol

Free as a Butterfly was what I was looking forward to the most out of this whole collection because it looked like a nice nude and the name is very pretty, but the lipstick itself is not that hot. It’s SO sheer, and I despise the lustre formula. I’m probably going to get it anyway because I was obsessed with Cinderella as a kid. Fingers crossed that the other products in this line aren’t as disappointing!

Really underwhelming. That top one I can’t even see. It looks like you’ve got nothing on. It wouldnt even be good for a top coat on another lipstick.

Erika Avatar

Wow, these are super disappointing. I do not see these being especially flattering on women of color or anyone with really pigmented lips. I was hoping Royal Ball would be more pigmented because it looks so pretty in the tube. Even with the pretty packaging, these are a pass for me!

Kenna Avatar

How disappointing! I was expecting these to be on the sheer side but (as ridiculous as it sounds) was still planning on purchasing both shades solely for the Cinderella label. But, for me anyway, the frosty finish is an absolute no go, and I won’t be purchasing either of these shades because of that. There was so much potential for this collection, but I guess MAC knows regardless of the quality of the product, people will purchase regardless for the Cinderella label.

I think it’s so funny – I must be one of the only people that likes the Lustre finish. Syrup and Capricious are my two favorite MAC lipsticks. That being said, I feel good skipping both of these. Not a fan of the colors. I’ll stick to the pigments and the palette so I can replicate your eye look!

Carmen Avatar

What boring lip colors, and I am a lip fiend.
Mac, why do you even bother with these shades?? So.many dupes for these! Repeats of repeats…

Thanks for posting these Christine. You are lovely as always, even in these boring shades.

Nancy T Avatar

Ugh, if only these were not Lustres! Or so terribly pale! I seriously do NOT think I could pull off these two shades to save my life. They ought to have included at least one shade that had some color and substance.

Lisa Avatar

First of all, I love your webpage. I use it frequently.
The Royal Ball lipstick is really pretty and looks great on you.
Unrelated to you or your website. Is anyone else annoyed that so many people bought large quantities of the Mac Cinderella line causing it to be sold out in a very short period of time? I don’t know. I just think it is inconsiderate.

Emily Avatar

I’m not a huge fan of the collection as a whole as I think there was so much more room for creativity. But, as a true MAC addict, I think I’ll pick up Royal Ball when it hits stores tomorrow just for the packaging alone haha.

I ended up buying free as a butterfly today and I love it it reminds me of siren song but more beige n gold the other lipstick was sold out but idc I prefer this one anyway its gorgeous and typically im not a fan of lustres other than capricious.

christie Avatar

It’s hard not to still want Royal Ball. Even when u say u don’t like something, the pics u take make them look great. Lol

I have the Cinderella Free As A Butterfly lipstick and I absolutely love it but it’s definitely more for some moisture and tint to my natural shade, just like you said. I totally see why people would not like this that much because it all depends on your skin and lip tone. I am a MAC lipstick addict and since I don’t want to purchase one for like $50 on amazon, I typed in google “mac cinderella lipstick descriptions” and your blog came up. Probably the best find ever!!! I am always looking for limited edition MAC lipsticks that they duplicate in their regular line. So thank you for this blog and keep it up I love it !!! And I agree, both shades look great on you!
