MAC Violetwink Eyeshadow Palette

MAC Violetwink Eyeshadow Palette ($44.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a purple-themed palette with six shades, one of which is available individually, while four others are repromotes. It was a good palette overall with no big misses but no big home runs either. With MAC’s recent palettes, often shades that seem so-so swatched tend to look and apply better on the lid. All six shades lasted at least eight hours on me before fading, which is always nice to see.

Sweet Allure is described as a “soft light pink [with a Satin finish].” It’s a light, pinky-beige with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had good color payoff with a soft, blendable consistency that was easy to use and lasted for eight and a half hours. This seems like it should be the same as Sweet Allure in the 15/Cool Neutral palette, but the one I have in my larger palette has much less of a sheen. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

French Clay is described as a “white grey [with a Frost finish].” It’s a light-medium, golden taupe with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had nice pigmentation while the texture was soft, buttery, and blendable. It wore well for eight and a half hours. This shade is also found in the 15/Cool Neutral palette. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Tendersmoke is described as a “muted silver lilac [with a Frost finish].” It’s a muted, medium-dark purple with a hint of gray and a pearly sheen. It had decent to good pigmentation, though the texture was a smidgen stiff in the pan. I didn’t have any issues blending it out. It started to fade after eight hours of wear. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Stars ‘n’ Rockets is described as a “purple with pink pearl [with a Veluxe Pearl finish].” It’s a brightened, fuchsia-purple with an iridescent lavender sheen. It had decent pigmentation, but it could have been better and the texture could have been softer. It lasted for eight hours on me. It is part of the permanent range. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Frizzyplum is described as a “dark violet with multi-dimensional pearl [with a Frost finish].” It’s a medium-dark, warm-toned purple with a frosted sheen. It had good color payoff with a fairly soft consistency that was blendable on the skin. On me, the color stayed on well for eight hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Overnight is described as a “cool black [with a Matte finish].” It’s a deep black with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had decent to good color coverage, but I wish it was more blendable. The texture was a little drier and stiffer, and this translated to application as well. It did wear for eight hours, though. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Wow, I’m impressed! It’s hard to get purple shadows right, and these look pretty solid. The first 3 shadows look kind of similar, I’d wish they had added a matte purple instead, but all of the colors look very wearable. Nice job, MAC!

My (possibly)forever favourite combination of colours . Glad to see the good rating on these!! I was hoping they wouldn’t be duds. I have most of these colours already in my collection but Im a sucker for all things purple so I maaaaay indulge!!Thanks for the review and beautiful eye-look!

Starts n Rockets on EVERYTHING! HAHA Easily my favorite shadow from MAC. Everything else I could dupe but I’ve never found anything exactly like it. It’s the sheerness I appreciate. I use it to blend out the edges of a look, smudge into any eyeliner, even layer over blush for a crazy highlight.

Have you ever tried Fishnet eyeshadow by Urban Decay? It’s just like Stars N Rockets but a little bit more opaque. It’s still fairly sheer though so you can still sweep it over your eyeshadows to give it that fuchsia/blue hazey feel.

If these were cooler-toned and with less pink, or if the quality was fantastic (considering that you don’t get that much product for the price), I would most likely purchase this, as I do love the packaging. I do really like the looks of French Clay and Tendersmoke — grey and silver tones in eyeshadows work well on me.

Looking at the pan I thought I would only like the first three colors, but I actually like all of the swatches. Stars and Rockets reminds me of two old Lorac shadows I had in college (Innocence and Joy I think) that I would mix together–back when I only owned about 5 eyeshadows! I actually think I threw them away a few years after, thinking I was “done” with bright makeup. I wish I didn’t, I’m getting nostalgic! Maybe I will get a single pan of Stars and Rockets–does the single usually have better pigmentation?

The more I look at the palette, the more I like it. Initially, I wasn’t sure because I didn’t think I’d get much use of the right half of it, but I started thinking of different looks where I could include them! I like the neutral shades on the left; they would be good brow highlight and crease shades for me. And I think Frizzyplum is such a fun name to say…lol

I have just got to buy THIS! Lovely look you created with this palette, and I imagine there are quite a few different looks one could create with it, from muted and/or smokey to vibrant and bright. And I am a sucker for purples and plums, so it’s really nice to see a palette of purples that performs well! Thank you so much for reviewing this for us, because your reviews definitely help one to choose products wisely.

I really really wanted the purple palette from the holiday collection, but the performance and packaging were so poor I didn’t get it. I don’t like this one as much, but I’m very happy to see it got decent reviews. I’m a little disappointed it only has the amount of product of two full sized eyeshadows for $44, but the packaging is so darn cute too. I’ll probably cave 🙂

Nicole Avatar

On the fence… It could use a matte thrown in there. I like the bellgreens one too and I’m trying to slow down my shadow pallet roll to make way for my MUFE singles. But, I do love me some purples..and from the other comments, these are some good shades. I only see 1-2 mUFE dupes for the bunch. Ouch! big decision, lol

Christine Avatar

Tough! I’d say you might want to stick to your original plan – MAC has tons of releases, so there’s always something next month. Savant in Bellgreens is a lot more unique, I think, but unless you’d wear it often, unique is fun to look at, but unnecessary to buy!

Nicole Avatar

Good point! It’s not like I don’t have a ton of purple, greyish, mauve shades at least very simliar to these amongst my many pallets either, even if they are not the dupes listed. Eventually, Once I have the MUFE collection built up, I would probably be able to dupe very closely just about any palette ,do you think? My goal is to get most of the collection, at least what I think would use. I have 3 single mac shadows from the alluring aquatic collection..that is all i have ever had in the way of shadows for them! So, i am really not sure on the quality of mac shadows overall. I have seen that a lot of people like them it seems and they have stood the test of time. I do know the MUFE seem pretty much grade A across the board and easy for me to work with and sit well on my skin, wear nicely. Your swatch gallery is a godsend I must tell you. I am going thru all the pallets I have on my “wants” list and trying to match up those first. I guess I should listen to my voice of reason,”Christine” and not the cool packaging and pretty color, lol.that’s like a 3 year old in a toy store, lol! Thanks for the pull down to earth. Sorry Mac. I’ll maybe do a few lippies, the chloro.. eyeliner, Maybe bellgreens. But, i was thinking of just getting the liner to fulfill that green funky need. I wish they did Savant in a single as a lot of people commented. It’s very possible they may bring it back . i have the UD electric palette too which may fulfill my color need . No, the Savant color is not one i’d reach for every day..it would be more of a fun look for me. I’ll think it through once the reviews are out and I get my budget worked through. Plus, one of those 20% off the entire order for Ulta came in the mail today which ends at the end of the month. Always a good time to stock up on essentials for me and my daughter. So, that may put a wrench in it..boo to Limited editions is what I say. Thanks for your reasonable words Christine. 🙂

oh.wosers! that was too long a reply on my part..super sorry. Thanks for pulling me back into reason..just dont read that! Your a busy girl..I was rambling. So sorry. i am typically soft spoken until makeup/skincare/ brushes enter the convo, lol! We need a cancel button after you reply, 🙂

I’m actually really liking the paler shades in this palette (the first three). These are the type of neutrals I like to use as an overall base.. no yellow, no orange not so warm shades to add a bit of life to the skin on the lid. Tendersmoke is so pretty. The remainder are tones well covered in my stash.,,have Stars ‘N Rockets. I like this palette overall and would be far more inclined on this rather than the other from this collection.

Lotus Avatar

Both palettes are just repromotes. Even Savant once existed as another shade and is very similar to bitter, mustard, and three shades from MJB 7 eye palettes, so I pass. Cute packaging. Is this their take on Korean makeup?
