MAC Tartan Tale: Vain & Glorious Lip Bag

Each year, MAC puts out a couple of lip products in specially designed/packaged bags, and this year is no different. The Vain & Glorious Lip Bag ($36.00) includes Baby Sparks (sparkly baby pink; dazzleglass), Mellow Mood (sheer pink; lipstick), and In Synch (light pink; lip pencil).

Both the lipstick and dazzleglass are full-sized, while the lip pencil is miniaturized (about half the size of regular lip pencils). None of the products in the kit are new; Baby Sparks is permanent, while Mellow Mood and In Synch are both repromotes.

The lip products come with a tartan patterned bag that’s a little larger than my hand. It’ll certainly hold all of the products it comes with, along with a few more. The bag is the same for both lip sets.  It seems well-made to me; it definitely doesn’t look or feel cheap just by handling it.  If tartan is your thing, cool–if it’s not, well, pass it on to a friend.

  • Baby Sparks is a sheer, milky baby pink with icy pink shimmer. On my l ips, it just lightens up my natural lip color a bit and adds a lot of glossiness. It’s part of the permanent line-up of dazzleglasses. As pretty as dazzleglasses are when worn, their quantity/price ratio really leaves something to be desired.
  • Mellow Mood is a semi-sheer softened pink with subtle gold shimmer. It’s a little milky, and it has a lustre finish. Since it’s not too cool, it works on both cooler and warmer skin tones. It was originally launched with Electroflash back in 2008.
  • In Synch is a coraled pink. It is a lip pencil, and it was originally launched with Too Fabulous earlier this year in the spring.

Value-wise, the Lip Bag is okay but it’s not a showstopping deal. You’re getting a full-sized lipstick ($14.50), full-sized dazzleglass ($18.00), and a half-sized lip pencil ($7.00), which is a total value of $39.50. If you include the bag, then you’ll feel like you’re getting a bit more for your money.

  • Product: 26/30
  • Value: 8/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION: If you like pink lips, this is definitely your set. If you have really pigmented lips, this set might not do much for you, as both lipstick/dazzleglass are on the sheerer side.

Thank you thank you thank you so much for this!
I was not sure about this lipbag anymore (I pre-ordered it…along with an awful lot of other stuff) but your swatches definitely turned me back on!

I love this collection. MAC + Scotland..who could ask for more?

I’m big on pinks and nudes but this lipstick/gloss combo isnt even very visible… im a bit disapointed with the holiday collection this year my friend 🙁 ::Tears::

i dont already own baby sparks so if i like the lipstick i might get this. the gold logo on the lipgloss and stick look so cool! i think im liking this packaging/ the colours better than last years xmas collection so far.

I really like this set, the softness of the color is definitely appealing to me. They look like they would be great for a natural look, and I’ve always wanted to try a dazzleglass. I might put this one on my Christmas list, lol!

Wow mellow mood looks Stunning on you! But I can’t justify buying the whole lip bag…it’s too bad, I love the gold shimmer in it that I find UD Naked lacks and Korres is very limited in Canada (and more expensive). Oh well!

Super cute!! I don’t have any of these items, so I will definitely be picking this up. For those of you who worry about it being sheer — maybe try the lipstick on in the store. Things always show up much darker on my lips than other people’s swatches — everyone is so different!

Mellow mood sort of reminds me a bit of speed dial since it has the gold sheen in it..If I have baby sparks and the lipliner do you think Christine that its necessary for me to get this lip bag?

I wouldn’t personally buy it just for one product – you’re spending $36 just for one color! Speed Dial is lighter/milkier, a bit cooler.

This just might be my second-ever MAC purchase 🙂
Pink lips, tartan bag, and it’s close enough to Christmas.. yup, I’m buying it. I hope it doesn’t sell out.
By the way, thank you so much for these reviews! It must be overwhelming to update the blog along with midterms at the same time, so I’m amazed that you have the time and energy to do all the reviews as well 🙂 greatly appreciate it.

The lipstick is really pretty and I love the packaging, but I already have Baby Sparks (one of my favorite Dazzleglasses) and In Synch. They should release the lipstick separately. What a lovely, subtle pink. It would look great w/ Baby Sparks over it.

Yay, they all look so pretty, especially In Synch! It must be crazy for you with all your midterms and MAC’s never ending holiday collections but thank you so much for the swatches!

I went to the preview event at my MAC store and only picked up one of the eye bags…I hope this doesn’t seel out at all; I definately want a chance to get this too 🙂

I wish they would just sell the lipsticks!! I don’t really seem to be liking the dazzleglasses and I never wear lip liners so this wouldn’t be a good deal for me. 🙁
But I really really like the lipsticks in this lip bags!

Crossing my fingers they repromote Mellow Mood sometime in 2011. I really want it, but I already have the other 2 products so it would be a waste.

I love this set especially the lipstick! It makes my face brighten up! I have to wear a mask all day because I work in a hospital. By the time I get off work, most of my face makeup is gone and my face appears darker than in the morning. However, when I use this lipstick, my face shines (in a good way of course). I just have to buy 2 extra ones…haha

i have it down to either this kit or the palette that is yellow on the outside and has carbon in it.. im an nw20. what do you think i should go for? i must admit the bag in this kit is kind of dragging me<3
thanks for a nice reviw<3

I just got back from the MAC Counter and this was the only thing I left with. I don’t really see everything matching together, but it was the most wearable/usable and the lipstick had special packaging. I really wanted to invest in this collection since I love Tartan.. but everything else in special packaging was powdery junk :/

This is just came out today in Japan.
When I swatched this I really like this lipstick!
But it costs 5800yen/approx $69. (Everything is overpriced here though)
I can’t make a decision because of the price :S
