MAC Slate Eye Pencil
MAC Slate Eye Pencil ($16.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “dark grey.” It’s a dark gray with neutral undertones and a matte finish. Tarte Charcoal (LE) is more shimmery. MAC Dark Majesty (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Metropolis (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery. Urban Decay Lure (P, $20.00) is a smidgen lighter. bareMinerals Mesmerized (LE, $14.00) is similar. Sephora Collection 5th Avenue (03) (P, $9.00) is slightly warmer. Urban Decay Black Market (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, darker. Urban Decay Smoke (P, $19.00) is similar. NARS Madison Ave. (P, $24.00) is cooler-toned. Bobbi Brown Smoke (P, $24.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
This new, limited edition shade will launch on December 26th in-stores and pop-up a bit earlier on MAC’s website on the 23rd. The Eye Pencil formula is supposed to “provide rich, consistent colour” while still being “comfortable to apply.” It had semi-opaque pigmentation in a single stroke, though it was buildable to opaque color in two to three passes. The consistency is smooth and almost powdery, but it’s not really creamy. I would highly recommend swatching on the back of your hand softly to wear down the initial, or else it is very sharp to use, and once the tip is worn slightly, it goes on fairly easily. It’s not as comfortable to use on the lash line as more waxy formulas, though. On me, the color wore well for eight hours before thinning. I’m not in love with the formula, but I wonder why MAC doesn’t have a gray in the Eye Pencil range that’s around permanently, since it would be a great addition color-wise.

It’s a very nice shade of gray. One would think at least one or two grays would be a must for any permanent line. Maybe MAC will add it someday.
It is a surprise!
On your waterline it looks very faint but the review sounds positive! I really like colors like this for day as its not as harsh as black and still gives definition!
It is showing oddly faint in the close-up, but it seemed noticeable when I applied it. I did smudge it in with eyeshadow, so I’m guessing that was it (tested it on a different day).
It’s noticeable in the full face shot. Maybe it just reflected the light differently in the close-up?
Possibly! So weird. It might be the angle, I don’t know. I added the full face shot because I’m like, “NOOO, it is more pigmented than that!” LOL!
Awww, it’s barely visible in your eye look, what a shame 🙁 I quite liked the color.
It’s interesting, because it seemed noticeable in person but the close-up makes it appear much lighter! I don’t know why!
I’d rather get Lure or Charcoal.
it looks nice – the full look is very pretty too.
Thank you!
The formula sounds a little iffy but I really like this color. I agree, MAC should definitely offer something like this permanently. It’s weird that they don’t.
Right? Gray is so necessary!
Things like this keep reminding me how much I want to get Lure and Transvaal… 😀 Grey is such a great eyeliner colour. It is really surprising that MAC doesn’t have more in that vein in the permanent line!
I totally agree – gray makes for a lovely eyeliner shade.
A lovely shade of grey – it looks good on you Christine – but I still love the teals more.
Thanks, Genevieve!
It is beautiful gray and I was really hoping for a better formula as I cant stand those waxy liners.. :P..
Also it is barely visible on waterline.. I shall skip it!!
Aww!
I like that it’s subtle enough to not be too stark on the lower lash line, but it’s definitely visible. Too bad anything I put down in that area vanishes in like a half hour. XD
A half hour! Wow 🙁
