MAC Technakohl Liners
MAC Technakohl Liners ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) are supposed to have a “soft and creamy” formula with “intense, rich colour deposit” while being long-wearing (specified as eight hours) and smudge-proof. I wish I could say that these were more impressive than the shades I’ve already reviewed, but these may be even more disappointing. The formula is soft as in waxy, so while it usually glides across the skin, it doesn’t lay down much color while doing so, and the waxiness builds up such that the color goes on unevenly and sticks in some places but not others. The wear is also shorter (though MAC’s saving grace is that they specified eight hours of wear) than most eyeliners, but the wear I get is shorter than they’ve claimed for most shades.
MAC Skyscape Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “metallic deep sky blue.” It’s a muted, medium blue with cool undertones and a metallic shimmer-sheen. It had semi-sheer color payoff in a single stroke, which was buildable to semi-opaque color coverage, but it applied unevenly and bunched up on itself, which made parts of it appear darker and thicker. This shade lasted for six hours on me. Such a shame, because it is a more unique shade as far as I can tell for eyeliners. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Raisinette Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “brown-purple.” It’s a deepened, burgundy brown with cool undertones and a satin finish. The texture was waxy and a little stiff, which made it prone to dragging and skipping. It had decent pigmentation, but it was hard to apply. It lasted for seven hours on me before blowing out. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Bishop Blue Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “blue-purple.” It’s a muted, dark purple with a hint of blue and a soft, pearly shimmer. It was sheer, dry, and very waxy, which gave it–at most–semi-sheer pigmentation and a faded quality to it at that. For me, this shade had smudged after six hours of wear. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Image Conscious Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “purple.” It’s a medium-dark purple with soft shimmer and a pearly sheen. It had semi-sheer pigmentation in a single pass, which wasn’t buildable for much more intensity than that. The waxy consistency made it hard to build up the color. On me, this shade lasted for six and a half hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
MAC Alpha Grey Technakohl Liner ($16.00 for 0.012 oz.) is described as a “metal grey.” It’s a pewter gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It’s so sheer with a really waxy consistency that just doesn’t help this apply well. It’s not sharp or painful, but you can’t get good color or application out of it. This shade stayed in place for six hours before it looked smudged/blown out. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

What a shame! This again points up why we need you. The set features some great shades that fill in the gaps left by UD, Stila, Sephora + MJ, for those of us colored eyeliner addicts. MAC is so uneven. It’s a shame that they can slide, based on their rep.
It’s SO disappointing that MAC came out with some more unusual shades but couldn’t get a good formula going.
Drats. These looked the prettiest of the lot, based on barrel color alone 🙁
🙁
Shame on Alpha Grey as it was a shade I was interested in.
I was excited for that shade, too 🙁
Pffff, the more I see of these eye pencils the more depressed I get…
Me too 🙁
Womp womp… Alpha Grey looked so cool! 🙁
I really wanted that one to work!
These are so disappointing – especially Bishop Blue! I think for this type of product (and this price point) I will stay with the Stila smudge sticks!
Stila’s formula is definitely better!
These look really sad.
They do 🙁
A lot of people won’t agree with me, but I feel that MAC is generally way too overhyped.
They have some really great products in their core range, and they can do quality products in their LE collections, but they can also be very hit or miss.
I s it wrong that looking at these swatches is starting to depress me?
Not at all!
Such a pity that the quality is not so good in most of those! They have some very interesting colours… :/
Agreed!
Those poor purples. *crying*
Oddly enough, the purples weren’t the WORST.
I know, but I wanted the purples the most. 😉
I’m really sad to see all of these underperform so badly. They’re all lovely colors.
Bishop Blue makes me sad 🙁 there are so many interesting colours in this collection, and they’ve managed to fudge nearly all of them! I know I’m not the biggest MAC fan, but I can always appreciate well-done products with neat colours. These are…not that. 😛
Just makes it even easier to skip!
Bishop Blue, Alpha Grey, Rasinette – more colours I was interested in, more cr*p ratings. What a shame.
Alpha Grey is such a beautiful shade (and more unique), but the formula… sigh.
I think because MAC is bringing out SO much makeup this season that they have substituted quantity for quality. Everyone has a budget and a few really good pieces are better than lots of average ones. For example – they only really needed to bring out 5-10 eyeliners of great quality and pigmentation rather than 27 that no-one can use. A commercial flop I would say. It also lessens the integrity of the brand.
The formula feels waxier than previous iterations, and I don’t know why they changed it.
Here’s me: “Bishop Blue looks pretty unique, I might go swatch it if it’s–” My brain can’t even finish the thought because I’ve scrolled down to the F.
The whole experience of testing these got soul-crushing after awhile, because they came up with some really lovely shades.
