MAC Sheen Supreme Lipglass (Part 1)

MAC Sheen Supreme Lipglass ($19.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a new and limited edition formula releasing next Thursday, March 1st. This post features these shades: Almond Blossom (pale pink with high level pearl), Asian Butterfly (lilac with pearl), Black Tea (deep brown with pearl), Cherry Fest (rose with high level pearl), and Dress Kimono (mid-tone frosted plum).

  • Almond Blossom is a pale beige and champagne-gold shimmered gloss that has no real color but a fair amount of shimmer. MAC Jana has lighter shimmer but the two are similar. MAC Pretty Plush is a bit lighter in shimmer color as well. MAC Mary is more golden.
  • Asian Butterfly is a sheer blue-based pink gloss with light and medium pink shimmer. It amps up the natural pink in my lips as well as adds shimmer. MAC Butterfly Dream is similar but has less shimmer. MAC Dressed to Dazzle has less shimmer.
  • Black Tea is a red-toned brown with gold shimmer. This is one of the more pigmented shades, but it does settle into lip lines and doesn’t apply evenly. MAC Get Rich Quick is browner. MAC Pret-a-papier is redder and brighter. Bobbi Brown Plum Gold has more berry coloring. MAC Gertruyd is similar but doesn’t have the gold shimmer. MAC Decorative is similar.
  • Cherry Fest is a sheer warm coral-pink with white shimmer. It looks primarily like white shimmer on my lips, so there are lots of sheer lipgloss dupes.
  • Dress Kimono is a soft fuchsia pink with subtle blue undertones and white shimmer. This one has semi-sheer color that has a tendency to settle into lip lines and doesn’t apply as evenly as I’d like it to. MAC Fabulous Fun has less fuchsia in it. Bobbi Brown Electric Violet is brighter and has purpler shimmer. MAC Aleydis is a bit lighter and has iridescent fuchsia shimmer. MAC Totally Bang is a bit brighter and more opaque.

The gloss is described as “soft succulent shades” mixed with “smooth, lush, pearl-rich shine.” Overall, it’s a sheerer gloss with more shimmer than color and a glossy shine. The formula lasts two to three hours on my lips, and while it feels non-sticky initially, after a half hour, it becomes tacky and feels really thin and sticky after an hour or so.  I tested the following shades specifically:  Almond Blossom, Asian Butterfly, Black Tea, Imperial Red, Mango Sheen, and Sweet Bean.

I like the initial consistency; it’s thick and cushion-y and not sticky, so it spreads evenly and easily, but I really don’t care for how sticky it gets as it wears on. This seems to be a progression that a lot of long-wearing glosses go through–except this gloss isn’t long-wearing. They’re not moisturizing, but they didn’t seem drying. These have the same vanilla scent that other MAC glosses and lip products have.

I’m not a fan of click-style/pen-type packaging. It’s probably as hygienic as a regular lipgloss that you plunge in and out of a tube, but I find the congealing gloss left in the brush applicator so gross. It just feels goopy, especially if you don’t use it everyday. I have so many of these types of glosses and end up tossing them because the brush ends up sticky, goopy, and all around unappealing to use. These seem large, but the amount of gloss they actually hold is half the average gloss–a mere 0.08 fl. oz. (which is the same as the under-sized Dazzleglass and Cremesheen Glass).

Here’s the big question, which is: how do they compare to Stila lip glaze, which I like but find variable as far as pigment goes? From the promo pics I was hoping for more coverage, but it appears not. Thanks for the review, I might just stick with Stila.

I had a chance to try these at my local mac counter recently- and I would stick with the Stila Lip Glazes. They are both sticky, but the Mac ones are so sheer and blotchy. I’m going to pass!
