MAC Round Midnight Extra Dimension Eyeshadow
MAC Wants You to Travel to an Extra Dimension
MAC Glamour Daze Extra Dimension Eyeshadows ($19.50 for 0.04 oz.) includes eight shades, and this post highlights four of them: Round Midnight (dark burgundy), Stolen Moment (dark taupe), Stylishly Merry (mid-tone dusty violet), and Tall, Dark, & Handsome (black with pearl).
MAC first launched this formula this past March, which I reviewed here and here. You can also read a more in-depth review regarding the new shades here (this post just has a recap and some tidbits regarding these four shades). The formula feels like a cross between MAC’s regular powder eyeshadows and their Mineralize Eyeshadow formula, because it feels like a powder, but it’s a little dry in a way that’s characteristic of Mineralize Eyeshadows. These bind and adhere better, though, and tend to apply more smoothly. Of these four, Stylishly Merry was less smooth compared to the others, but Round Midnight was extremely smooth. In my testing of five of the eight shades, they wear the six hours MAC claims, but when used dry, they are prone to fading somewhat. When used damp or over a primer, I was able to wear these for eight hours without fading.
Round Midnight is a purple-burgundy with a soft frosted finish. It had excellent pigmentation both dry and wet. It was also exceptionally smooth compared to several of the other shades. MAC Rich Core is a bit lighter, less purple. MAC Deceit is very similar. Make Up For Ever #311 is redder.
Stolen Moment is a plummy taupe with hints of brown and gray and a frosted finish. It had pretty good color payoff when used dry and was totally opaque when used wet. Urban Decay Armor is less plum. MAC Satin Taupe is similar, a little browner. theBalm Come-Hither is darker, grayer.
Stylishly Merry is a fuchsia pink with a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation dry and better payoff when used damp. Urban Decay Noise is pinker. MAC Moon Rose is pinker and darker. Urban Decay Infamous is a bit more purple. Urban Decay Junkshow is more vibrant, less pink. Make Up For Ever #52 is darker, less frosted. MAC Infra-violet is similar, less frosted. Sugarpill 2AM is more purple and matte.
Tall, Dark, & Handsome is a soft gray-black with a soft, frosted finish. It has multi-colored shimmer that’s very fine, so it’s hard to see it on the eye. The color payoff was almost the same both wet and dry, though when used dry, it’s just a little softer. MAC Dark Dare is darker, blacker, less gray. MAC Cinderefella is similar when used dry. Buxom Black Lab is similar but in cream form.

I love the look of Stolen Moment, but I’m annoyed at MAC for charging more for smaller eyeshadows. I don’t mind the size – I prefer smaller, cheaper products – but they really should have come with a price decrease!
Yep – I don’t mind that they said, “You know, these are a little big.” But then, if it’s only $0.50 difference, give me almost twice the amount!
If my math is correct, the per ounce price is actually a huge increase! Almost Double! To sell this amount of product at the same price per ounce as the larger amount they would have to lower the price out of the Prestige Pricing Range and lose the High Price equals High Quality cachet. Too bad, Tall, Dark and Handsome looks lovely.
Well, their regular eyeshadows start at $15 🙂 Especially since they added $1-2 for “special packaging.”
I like the colors but the pricing thing is enough to turn me off. On the one hand, I don’t necessarily mind the smaller size – it’s hard to hit pan on anything. On the other hand, for this big a size drop the price should drop several dollars to reflect it. It doesn’t and that’s just bs which makes it easy for me to skip.
I agree, Carrie – don’t care if they reduce size, but the price difference? It wasn’t even close to the quantity decrease.
And the thing is is that they can get away with it because either people won’t notice or won’t care because it’s MAC. It’s frustrating because I keep WANTING to indulge and then there’s something that keeps holding me back. I can’t think of another company that makes me so frustrated!
I love Round Midnight..wow!
Was able to haul Round Midnight from Nordstrom tonight. Also grabbed Tall Dark & Handsome off the MAC site last night. Round Midnight was already sold out there at that time.
I’m really quite happy about these.
Glad you liked it!
I hope you get a well-deserved break for the next day or two, b/c all this has been an amazing amount of work ! I mostly have Mac fatigue (and general makeup fatigue) bc everything is starting to look the same, and I have plenty that’s so close to most of the latest exciting thing that comes out of whatever new collection. But it’s still great fun to check out your site. Thanks for all the great work.
Thanks, Itn! 🙂 No breaks for me, but it’s how I work best!
“They’re good eyeshadows overall, but it really nags at me the way they decreased quantity and didn’t do much in the way of making the price reflect that.”
Precisely….that is why I only picked up one!
It hasn’t even been a year!
Oh now, Stolen Moment, Tall, Dark & Handsome & Round Midnight shall be mine!!
Gorgeous.
Enjoy!
I totally agree about their decreasing the amount of product. That’s why I only ended up buying one when I had been interested in a few of them. I mean I can’t really say that they aren’t worth the price necessarily, but it’s annoying that they would launch these with much more product just a little while ago and then do this.
Yeah – it’s a problem only because it was not even a year ago that they launched these in bigger quantity for just a wee bit more.
I agree – even if more than a year had gone by since the first release, I wouldn´t understand the decrease in volume at almost the same price. So sad…I am really looking forward to swatch these in person, especially Round Midnight and Stolen Moment, but my hear will probably ache when I find out the price these will be sold at in Mexico 🙁 !
I love Stylishly Merry and Round Midnight! I think I’ll be picking those up.
Let us know how you like ’em!
What do you use to apply these for the swatches on your hand?
Brush!
Ooo Round Midnight is gorgeous! Stolen Moment is pretty nice too. I doubt I’ll fork over the $ for either but Round Midnight in particular is tempting…
Thank you so much for all these swatches!
Remember how amazing the Mega Metal shadows were? You received 0.11 oz for $19.50 and that was December 2010. Come to think of it, that was the last time I bought anything from MAC and now I’m glad that I boycotted their products. At first I unintentionally stopped buying from MAC then I got frustrated when I wanted to buy something and it sold out in a matter of hours. That was the last straw. I am not a fan of exclusivity in cosmetic lines, I like to know if I really love a product that I can come back and buy it again. I digress… On a lighter note thank you for all your hard work Christine, you’re a gem!
That’s one of the reason’s I’ve fallen in love with NARS. With exception of the eyeshadow trios 4X a year, and the occasional “retirement” of some of the permanent line, I know I can hold off on buying a product until I can actuially give it some thought, and I can replace it, if necessary. Just about every seasonal product makes its way into the main line. To me, it shows both respect for the customer base, and that they can stand behind the products, and not rely on people rushing to pick it up, unseen/untested, just because it’s “grab it while you can”.
I also find it amusing that when it comes to dupes, most are from past MAC collections! Why not just leave these products in the perm line, under one name?
These were the only items I was looking forward to in the collection because I love the ones from earlier this year. I stopped by a store today and was so disappointed to find out how small they were. I had planned on buying a few but left without any. I could understand if the price were lower but it barely is. Meh, their loss.
It’s so sad I want Tall, Dark, & Handsome in my collection simply because I love the name. I won’t fork over the money for that, though. Thanks so much for all the hard work in quickly getting the photos and review up for the collection! Great work, as always!
I really wanted stolen moment and round midnight, but the fact that they reduced the quantity and only charged $0.50 less is a big turnoff. I also noticed that feline, if purchased from the permanent line, is @15, but if you purchase it from the LE collection, it’s $16.50. I am seriously considering parting ways with the brand. They also release too many limited edition things, and half of them end up being quite shoddy.
These are gorgeous! Not sure if I will be buying any though… I often get a makeover done on my birthday in early December, maybe I’ll grab some then 😀
By the way, the link at the start of the article says Fluidlines instead of Eyeshadows, the one that links to the Nordstrom website. Not sure if anyone had pointed it out yet!
Thanks, Jade!
Stolen Moment is lovely but the price hike totally isn’t! I’m going to skip it because I have Satin Taupe.
I LOVE Stylishly Merry! =)
I love the look you created !
Round Midnight is such a nice color, love it! Can’t wait for the collection to come to France 🙂
I’ve never owned anything by MAC, and the decrease of quantity without having the price reflect it really, really doesn’t make me want to try. It’s quite baffling that they should get away with it, because it seems to me that you recent MAC reviews almost always display less-than-stellar products (to the point that it becomes funny, in a Let’s-watch-this-ship-burn kind of way) for ever-increasing price-tags.
Since these are not a traditional pressed powder product and are processed completely differently, they are more expensive. With products of this nature (the dior flower quads that came out in the summer, all the Estee Lauder Gelee products, the stila jewel shadow palette from christmas a few years ago to name a few) you will always note that the fill is smaller, that’s partly due to the fact that these formulas are more expensive because of the ingredients used to get the texture and high performance and also because the process to produce it is more involved and costly. Also, because of the nature of these formulas, larger fills do not perform as well. You get what you pay for.
Hi M,
It’s not paying that much that is really bothersome, it’s the significant decrease in product without a corresponding (not even close) decrease in price. These eyeshadows were released about 6-7 months ago for $20 and you got 0.07 oz. of product – now they’re $19.50 and 0.04 oz. That’s the problem. Though the reality is there is an extremely high mark up on all cosmetics, MAC included.
I, personally, don’t mind the price hike, because I’ve come to expect that from MAC (other brands, too, just not as abundantly). However, my issue is the fact that these are released in such limited quantity. In a time where so many are living paycheck-to-paycheck, items are sold out before some can afford to pick something up. It just shows a lack of regard for the customer-base. That, for me, is the real turn-off for the brand. I’m quite certain there are people out there who have put themselves in debt trying to keep up with the collections, which is not the fault of MAC, but I feel they can slow things down a bit, at least during these economic times.
You are absolutely right! I live in Poland, and MAC stuff is expensive here, like a lipstick costs 80 zloty which is around $26 etc etc. In Warsaw we have 3 MAC salons, and when there are LE collections, these salons get around 3 or 4 units of each product, like 4 blushes, 4 lipsticks. Can you believe it? So if you’re not there the day the collection comes out with a suitcase full of money, there won’t be anything left for you the next day. LE collections should be in the shops for a longer period of time and there should be more products, so everyone has the chance to save up and buy without freaking out they won’t be able to buy sth because richer girls will scoop everything up. This one girl for example bought every single blush from the MM collection, all 4 just for herself!!
I can relate to that scenario very well…..I really don´t get how MAC determines how many of their LE items they distribute to each country. It is unfair that as a consumer you are willing to purchase a product, but you can’t because you probably don´t have the money at that very moment or you arrived at the store after one person bought ALL the products. A MAC MUA told me about a lady that bought almost the whole lot of Venomous Villians because “her five year old daughter was a fan of anything Disney”…so there are times when people for whom makeup does not mean that much buy it for other reasons and limit the chances (though not intentionally, of course) for others who will not be able to get some items due to the very small amount available. Lately I’ve tried not to worry that much about LE items; it’s too much stress and it takes the fun away from makeup.
I love MAC but I am so disappointed that they test on animals. I have been a happy customer for years and am saddened by the fact that I have to stop buying their products. I hope they change their minds so that I can be a customer again.
None of the Estee Lauder Companies, including MAC, test on animals. You can read a letter from Estee Lauder right here: http://elcompanies.com/PdfLibrary/Statement_AnimalTesting.pdf
So beautiful, but is the quality there? I used my Stolen Moment eyeshadow today for the first time and it fell out of the pan – completely intact. Like the entire shadow product just came right out of the pan. I was able to pick it up and put it back in, but of course it is just sitting in there loosely. Almost can’t believe it. Guess I’m headed to MAC for an exchange, but this really make me question the quality.
Oh no! I haven’t had that happen with any of the ones I bought! Hopefully it doesn’t!
Christine, as they are so similar, would you recommend Stolen Moment or Satin Taupe? Stolen Moment looks like it might be cooler toned?
I prefer Satin Taupe myself – it’s cheaper and smoother, but Stolen Moment can be used wet/dry, so that is a plus.
Thanks! I’ll take that into consideration 🙂 I’m considering Bare Escentuals The Escape Duo as well, just to make it harder for myself!
Oooooooooh! Round Minight & Stolen Moment are so pretty!!
I love Round Midnight and Stylishly Merry 😀 I might have to pick this two up. Just my kind of shades, and I love the look you did with them, my wallet is angry with me now 🙂 .
I tried Stolen Moment on at Mac and there’s a very strong resemblance to Shale. I swatched them both on my hand and showed the woman at the counter. She tried to explain how they were different but mixed up her explanations… as it turned out, she couldn’t tell much of a difference either.
Really ?! Good to know coz i have Shale and it doesnt look the same on the swatch here ! Guess i can skip it !
Oh thanks I was about to buy it, now I don’t need to 🙂
We have lot’s of limited’s that are a repromote or are a bit different. She clearly didn’t read her update book.
Extra dimension is a different product then our pressed eyeshadows. It’s a new formula that’s a liquid powder combination. That’s not pressed but ‘dried’ in that shape. It’s ultra soft, glides over the skin and you can give it a soft or harder look. (Aplied wet or dry)
I hope it’s a keeper! *fingers crossed*
