Foiled Rose

MAC Foiled Rose Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a brighter, medium-dark purpled magenta with cooler, violet and purple pearl over a warmer base color. It had semi-sheer pigmentation that was buildable to medium coverage. The texture was smooth, lightly emollient, and thinner than other shades in the Metallic range. It could have applied more evenly. The lipstick stayed on well for four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating.

The Metallic Lips collection features a new (and limited edition!) finish, Metallic, which is supposed to be “rich colour [that] melds with smooth pearlized chrome.” The range of shades is described as “vibrant, intense, [and] on-trend.” The coverage varied from shade to shade–anywhere from semi-sheer to semi-opaque–but many shades look like they’re more suitable for a subtle look or for layering on top of another lip product to add a more shimmery finish. The majority of shades featured finer shimmer, which translated to a more foiled, reflective look, but a few had some shimmer. The wear was between three and five hours, depending on the shade, and most shades had some slip but were not slippery overall, so they were comfortable to wear but not hard to maintain. They were vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

MAC Lipstick comes in a variety of finishes, and the pigmentation and wear tend to be dependent on the finish. The sheer finishes, like Lustres, tend to wear for only a couple of hours and have sheer coverage (as designed) and are non-drying.

Some of the original Matte shades have a stiffer, drier formula, while newer ones have a more velvety, silicone-feel to them, and the latter are creamier, more comfortable to wear, and easier to apply, but most Matte shades are quite pigmented and long-wearing, though some are drying.

The Amplified and Satin finishes tend to have good pigmentation, lightly creamy to moderately creamy consistencies with a bit of shine, and moderate to long wear with deeper, richer shades wearing longer. The Frost and Metallic finishes have the most variance between shades with coverage ranging from semi-sheer to opaque with average wear and non-drying to slightly drying formulas. All MAC lipsticks are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

Disobedient

MAC Disobedient Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark berry with a stronger, purple tint and subtle, cool undertones paired with fine, pink and plum pearl. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that applied evenly and smoothly to the lips. It had less shimmer than most of the shades in the Metallic range, though, so while it had better coverage overall, it wasn’t really metallic in finish. The texture was smooth, lightweight, and easy to apply and spread across the lips. It wore well for five hours and left a subtle stain behind while hydrating my lips.

Hades Fire

MAC Hades Fire Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a medium-dark, muted plum with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had slightly larger particles, which I could feel the texture of when I applied it to my lips. It had medium, slightly buildable color payoff, but the higher slip resulted in somewhat patchy application and some color that settled into my lip lines from the get-go. The lipstick wore well for four hours and was lightly hydrating.

I bought Disobedient and Metal something. I really like them both but honestly not sure when or how often I’d ever wear either one — certainly not to where I work lol

I really like Foiled Rose, but I think Mad Hatter might be too close. It’s so ironic that Disobedient is one of the least metallic and scored the A- rating.

Some of the shades in this range look really amazing, but I’m leery of lipsticks of more obvious shimmer/sparkle after my experience with Kat von D’s gothica. It’s a beautiful colour, and it looked great… for about 5 seconds and then I pressed my lips together. The shimmer immediately abandoned in areas and concentrated in others and looked patchy as heck. 🙁

I loved Hades Fire so much that I picked up 3 of them. And one Foiled Rose (also 2 Pale Rose). I think my love for Hades Fire comes from not already owning anything like this yet! Being a pale nude kinda girl, the metallic quality helps me not fear the deep/dark color quite as much. Keeps it not so serious I guess. I’m LOVING mine. I’m also no expert on metallic formula quality-these are a first for me! I like!

I can attest to it having lasted 5+ hours on me with one reapplication touch up which wasn’t totally necessary but I did it bc I was wearing this for the first time and felt it might be higher maintenance so in checking on it I did touch it up but this stuff wore beautifully and evenly for the whole 5 hours. I’m referring to Hades Fire. And I work at our church and found it incredibly appropriate with my low key bronze & plum eyeshadow look with a loose low ponytail for understated sophistication. The lips were the focus for sure but if I can wear it to work at church, I’d say it’s wearable for any occasion! ? So gorgeous.
