MAC Foiled Eyeshadows Reviews, Photos, Swatches (Part 1)

MAC Enchanted Forest Foiled Eyeshadow
MAC Enchanted Forest Foiled Eyeshadow

MAC Foiled Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a new, limited edition formula (we’ll probably never see it again, because when MAC puts out a good holiday formula, you now, like Mega Metals, it’ll disappear forever!) that can be used wet or dry. I don’t have much more information about the formula than that, though, so I am making an assumption that they will be sheerer dry and more intense damp (which is how MAC has touted their wet/dry eyeshadow formulas in the past). That being said, when the collection launches online, I will go back and see if there are more specific claims and make any relevant updates at that time.

MAC Enchanted Forest Foiled Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “warm rich brown.” It’s a medium-dark, golden bronze with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had great pigmentation whether dry or damp; I really couldn’t tell much of a difference between the two applications. The eyeshadow seemed ever-so-slightly smoother when applied damp. It had a really soft, smooth texture that blended out nicely on the skin without losing intensity. On me, it wore well for eight hours.

MAC Fairy Land Foiled Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “warm champagne.” It’s a light-medium, golden beige with warm undertones and a sparkling, frosted finish. This was one of the sheerer ones in the range (and it is one of the few where there is a more significant difference between dry and damp applications), with more semi-sheer pigmentation dry and then mostly opaque coverage damp. The texture was soft and blendable, and it was buildable on the lid. It wore well for eight hours before creasing slightly.

MAC Joy Toy Foiled Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “pink copper.” It’s a muted, medium golden brown with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. This was one of the least shimmery shades of the ones I tried, though obviously it is still quite shimmery. It had semi-opaque pigmentation dry and fully opaque coverage damp with a stronger sheen as well. The consistency is soft, smooth, and finely-milled while blending easily on the skin. It started to crease after eight hours on me. Marc Jacobs Beauty Found (LE, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). Tarte You're Lion (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Laura Mercier Intense Copper (LE, $29.00) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Make Up For Ever I538 Pearly Gray Beige (P, $17.00) is lighter (90% similar). Viseart Gitte (PiP, ) is lighter (90% similar). Dior Expose #1 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Icon Diva Eyes #1 (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). Dior Ambre Nuit #2 (LE, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). Sleek MakeUP Court in Cannes (LE, $9.99) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Natasha Denona Polaris (116K) (PiP, ) is more shimmery (90% similar). Too Faced Nutmeg (LE, $16.00) is lighter (90% similar). Sydney Grace S'mores (PiP, $6.25) is cooler (90% similar). Giorgio Armani Rose Ashes (11) (DC, $39.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Buxom Style Icon (P, $12.00) is cooler (85% similar). LORAC Pearl Slate (LE, $19.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). bareMinerals Schmooze (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). NARS Hollywoodland (P, $28.00) is lighter (85% similar). YSL Golden Glow #4 (PiP, ) is cooler (85% similar). NABLA Cosmetics Glitz (P, $8.00) is brighter, cooler (85% similar). Natasha Denona Moonstone (59M) (PiP, $29.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Faerie Fayre Foiled Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “mid-tone peach terracotta.” It’s a medium-dark, coppery brown with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation dry and totally opaque coverage damp, and the damp application gave it a smoother sheen as well. It had a soft, smooth consistency that blended out beautifully. The color lasted for eight hours before creasing slightly.

I have to agree about the Mega Metals…. I still have my UD X dupe of Tweet Me going strong years later.

JOY TOY, and FAIRY LAND are my favorites out of this batch. My fear is that this collection has so many similar tones it might not spark enough interest. And MAC’s about there sales if they even consider re-promoting a new formula. Which is what happened with the Extra Dimension formula.

Christine Avatar

IT’S FREAKING HILARIOUS. LIKE A CRUEL JOKE THAT’S SO LONG-RUNNING THAT IT’S NOW ALMOST FUNNY.

Mega Metals was one of MAC’s best formulas, and it is STILL a great formula even years later with many more improvements/formulas released by other brands. In many ways, it reminds me a lot of the new Kat Von D Metal eyeshadows and some of Make Up For Ever’s eyeshadows.

I love Mac’s extra dimension formula ( just bought a few more during the recent Nordstrom 10 pt. promotion) and MUFE e/s are my current HG shadow. If these are even smoother and softer, I’m in deep trouble!

elektrak Avatar

Great! I’m super excited! I hope the small magnets I have will keep them safe in place! I can’t help but picture how beautiful my palette would be! I only have “uninterrupted” and “always sunny” in it now! Thanks for the quick response Christine! 😀

Nicole Avatar

These are gorgeous! They look so smooth and satiny-shiny. They remind me of silk sheets for some reason! Lol
I like them all! But, with the price tag, I’m certainly going to need to pick and choose. I think I’ ll want Enchanted Forest and Fairie Fayre, maybe Joy Toy out of this bunch.

It is truly killing me that I can’t own any of these since I’m obsessed with all things fae. I don’t buy from MAC though and I try not to make any exceptions. I really don’t need any of them, though they are gorgeous….Attempting to console myself with the long list of dupes.

Isn’t the Guo Pei the only one that has outrageously charged for packaging in recent memory?

Although if it was a dollar or two more I’m okay with it =S Some of the older collections had packaging that was totally worth it!

Christine Avatar

MAC charges $1 or more for any packaging change, or even standard packaging that is a collab. All of their luxury packaged collections are significantly more expensive (Guo Pei was one of those, but they do at least one of those per year). But $1 more is still $1 more, and for me, I just don’t value the packaging enough to pay more for the same stuff. That’s just my personal preference 🙂

Lacey Avatar

Oh, to buy or not to buy. I probably wouldn’t be able to tell these apart from several neutrals in my collection when they’re actually on my eyes. BUT, if the formula is good…and really, you always need good basic shades outside of a big palette, right???

Nancy T Avatar

These look so lux and silky that I know I’m in deep doody $’s wise! Fairy Fayre is a must for me, for sure.
With these releasing, my desire to get Ellie Goulding Halcyon Nights is greatly diminished. These, my brand new CP haul, and that I already own MAC’s Pro Pan of Saddle just make that palette all about the packaging, I guess.
Speaking of that EG collection, last night I performed a trial run of a Plushglass just to see whether the formula would kill my lips? My conclusion is, that for me, that is not a great lip plumping formula. Super pretty, but also VERY drying!

Nell Avatar

Are they similar to Makeupgeek’s foiled shadows? Or is it just a name? I love Mug’s but they transfer to the crease and above like no tomorrow (with any possible base). Hope these ones are better!

Amara Avatar

i think these look super interesting but i have so many similar colors! although i’m a sucker for these colors because i love how they make my blue eyes pop. and i don’t know why but the ‘design’ on the product weirds me out. hahaha

Genevieve Avatar

This is a gorgeous set of foiled eye shadows – all the colours are beautiful and could be worn in a variety of settings. I do the Lorac Pro Metals palette would be an easier option to use instead of fiddling around with lots of individual pans…..
But if you only liked one or two colours – these are lovely. Great eye look Christine.

Abir Avatar

I’m surprised that Enchanted Forrest for a B+ and Joyland got an A- since the thing that brings down the rating to a B+ is 8.5 for pigmentation but EF had great pigmentation. It was Joyland that had less pigmentation dry.
Could you clarify, Christine?

Christine Avatar

Dry = sheerer, damp = opaque, so if it’s opaque both ways, that’s not consistent with the formula 🙂 As mentioned above, it’s a wet/dry formula, so I am going off of the description of about 90% of wet/dry formulas (including all of MAC’s that I’m aware of!) that are the same: dry for sheerer coverage, damp for opaque coverage.

Katherine T. Avatar

Aargh! I’m sure I have some dupes in my stash, but these are gorgeous and probably better quality. And some of the best from MAC . I might pick up 1 or 2, maybe a workhorse brown/gold shimmer and that cool purple

Mariella Avatar

Oh me, oh my – these look SO lovely! And you are right, Christine – MAC does discontinue the best finishes (Mega Metals, Starflash, PRO-LONGWEAR shadows – what the heck was with THAT???) I have 3 or 4 of the Mega Metal shadows and an equal # of Pro Longwear and I treasure them. I think MAC should have made them standard size (as they’ve finally done with the Extra Dimension shadows) and perhaps then, they’d have been better sellers (if that was the reason for discontinuing them). So I’d best grab these as soon as they hit the stores (though lately, I find their LE stuff isn’t selling out in store as fast as it used to….could it be that people are getting fed up?)

Christine Avatar

I forgot about Starflash! And Matte2!

Years ago, I used to skip lunch to power through a new MAC release to get photos/swatches up ASAP, and while yes, part of me was totally crazy, the other part knew that MAC launches brought in a lot of traffic and visitors. MAC can and does cause spikes in traffic still, but it is less frequent and typically associated with bigger collabs than their more “standard” releases like this one. I also firmly believe that with more and more brands being extremely accessible AND with more people being comfortable with online shopping (return policies, blogs/videos for swatches and reviews, safer procedures for financial transactions) that more people are using a greater variety of brands than just one or two. MAC prices have increased at a faster rate than the average brand, which just puts them closer to mid-to-high-end brands (like UD, Too Faced, Tarte, etc.) with less of a price difference.

I do think MAC has increased inventory on some releases – or perhaps they’ve just gotten better at anticipating inventory needs to capture more of the sales.

Candice Avatar

I like how these just “go” together so effortlessly to create a look. It’s the type of thing that would be a really cool ColourPop style 4-shadow collection I find (and that’s a price I’d be into while I just can’t do 20$x4). Thanks for the review!!

Sarina Avatar

I love of the look of these and the reviews. I’ve snapped them up in all the colours today. I really like the extra dimension shadows so if these are better, which I suspect they will be from your review, I’m in for a real treat. I think I will pass on the cremesheen glasses and check out a couple of the Sephora dupes. Happy Christmas!

Julia Avatar

I accidentally bought ‘Toy Joy’, it’s a nice color but it so similar to ‘All that glitters’ just a bit brighter. So now I’ve two colors at home which are almost the same…
Actually i wanted ‘enchanted forest’ as an addition to cork.. guess i just had too many swatches on my hand and the sales assistant and i had the wrong name.

All in all i love the formular of these shadows. If they wouldn’t be so expansive I would really love to buy enchaned forest but as a student i can’t buy everything.
