MAC Deep Rooted Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “brown taupe [with a Matte finish].” It’s a medium-dark taupe with gray-leanings and a semi-matte finish. The consistency was creamy enough to apply easily and evenly, while it had mostly opaque color payoff. On me, it wore well for five hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. Anastasia Resin (P, $18.00) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Makeup Geek Misfit (P, $12.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Griffin (P, $18.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Huda Beauty Silver Fox (P, $20.00) is lighter (85% similar). Smashbox Grunge (P, $21.00) is lighter, glossier (80% similar). ColourPop Kapow (DC, $6.50) is lighter, warmer (80% similar). MAC Gwendolyn (LE, $19.00) is darker (80% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Stavros (DC, $36.00) is lighter, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC In My Fashion Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “darkened chocolate brown [with a Matte finish].” It’s a deep, dark plummy black with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. For as dark as it was, and the fact that it wasn’t fully opaque, it applied surprisingly evenly. It glided on without tugging, and it wasn’t uncomfortable to wear over the six hours it lasted. The formula was on the drying side overall. NARS Paint It Black (P, $26.00) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). MAC Valiant (LE, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). Urban Decay Blackmail (DC, $18.00) is warmer (95% similar). Dior Ultra Night (111) (P, $37.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay Blackmail (DC, $22.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Christian Louboutin Beaute Eton Moi (P, $90.00) is lighter (85% similar). Smashbox Bankrolled (P, $21.00) is glossier (85% similar). Kaleidos Scorpion Fruit (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, cooler, less glossy (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC In the Spirit Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “pure black [with a Matte finish].” It’s a medium-dark black with subtle, cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It might look similar to In My Fashion in the tube, but it is actually more noticeably different when applied. I think this could have run neutral-toned and even deeper for more contrast (and more in line with the “pure black” description). The texture had slight slip, so it didn’t apply as evenly as I would have liked, but it didn’t slide around or feather when I wore it. The color lasted for five hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. NYX Chambord (P, $6.00) is more pigmented, better quality (95% similar). Make Up For Ever #50 (DC, $19.00) is glossier (95% similar). Make Up For Ever C604 (DC, $22.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Valiant (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Bite Beauty #056 (P, $18.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). KVD Beauty Slayer (P, $19.00) is warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Hello Boys (LE, $8.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Primary #2 (Vol. 1) (PiP, ) is darker (90% similar). Milani I Am Invincible (P, $6.99) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Blacquer (000) (LE, $30.00) is warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Midnight (P, $18.00) is cooler (90% similar). Fenty Beauty F'n Black (P, $18.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Stallion (DC, $21.00) is warmer (95% similar). Dior Ultra Night (111) (P, $37.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Sephora Woof (44) (P, $8.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tarte Naughty (P, $20.00) is glossier (95% similar). Anastasia Midnight (P, $20.00) is warmer, less glossy (90% similar). MAC Hautecore (LE, $19.00) is glossier (95% similar). NARS Paint It Black (P, $26.00) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). KVD Beauty Witches (P, $20.00) is less glossy (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

These three shades are new, permanent shades that will be added to the existing line-up. It seems that many stores have these shades available for purchase, but as of the posting date of this review, I did not see them available online yet.

OK, I needs to get Deep Rooted to see if I can pull it off! Such a unique color. Either I’m going to look real cool and edgy, or I’m going to look dead. In the Spirit looks pretty decent, but I think UD Perversion and BITE Squid Ink have set the standard for black lipsticks.

Ombg! (I’ve put the ‘f’ in there so often that autocorrect puts it in). That look with deeply rooted is TDF. The dolline picks up the inner 1/3 of you eye and the halo of your eye channels the deeply rooted. And, to top it off, good mood. I think this is my favorite look of yours ever, but prob just because it exemplifies my makeup ‘theory,’ how colors should echo each other to form a cohesive total. How entirely gorgeous. Think I’m in on deeply rooted, unless what Katherine says applies, or it reads trying too hard on old me.

Deep Rooted isn’t close enought to Stone to warrant a comparison? That surprises me. I do really like the color, and it’s permanent, so worth a look. I guess I’ll have to compare the two in the store.

They didn’t even seem like they were in the same realm to me? http://www.temptalia.com/side-by-side/?sbs_1_search=MAC+Deep+Rooted&sbs_1=238585&sbs_2_search=MAC+Stone&sbs_2=196555

Stone is warm and brown-based, whereas Deep Rooted is much cooler, more purple-hued.

Weird! I wonder if my Stone is a slightly different color batch? That plus a bunch of lighting and skintone factors may make the difference. I swear, when I first saw the Deep Rooted swatch, I put Stone on and looked at myself in my “daylight spectrum” fluorescent makeup mirror, and my lips looked just that grey! Definitely going to have to compare them in person.

Christine Avatar

Let me know how they compare, Alecto!

I typically find one of the easier ways to compare when trying to discount things like lighting/skin tone/natural lip color is product shots (the lighting for product shots is the easiest to carry over from session to session), but even when I look at them in the tube, Stone definitely looks warmer/browner and Deep Rooted is purply!

Love Deep Rooted! That one is definitely going on my wish list — it’s amazing how good grey and taupe lipsticks look on me. It’s like they’re my version of a “peachy nude”, which always make me look sick/dead. I would like to have a black lipstick in my kit — leaning toward Perversion or Chambord.

I’m very critical of my mattes being very matte so the black just isn’t doing it for me. I think I will go for Kat Von D’s studded black lipstick.
Deep Rooted is making me all tingly inside though, I love it so much. I’m trying to think if I know of any liquid lipsticks that compare to it. Maybe a Coloured Raine one?
One of my inner dilemmas is if I should avoid tube lipsticks and go for liquid ones more often, since I crave a truly matte finish. but I’m so in love with Mac’s mattes that a while ago I set out on a mission to collect all of them. now with all the new ones I see that won’t be happening haha. especially when there are some that are too shiny for my liking :/

You better cut it out Christine! I can’t take it! These looks are absolutely gorgeous. I’ve been watching Deep Rooted ever since you first posted about it. Now the swatch is making me want it even more. I also have “Really Me” on my list too. Just wondering how close it is to Viva Glam II and Blankety.

Deep Rooted looks like a potential dupe for Jeffree Star Cosmetic’s Scorpio (a liquid-to-matte). Could be useful for people who don’t like that formula, or prefer traditional lipsticks! 🙂
