The Sultry Season: MAC Cyber Lipstick

MAC Cyber Lipstick ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) is a deep, dark, reddened purple with a satin finish. If that description sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same one I used to describe MAC Smoked Purple, which is virtually the same, except it is a bit more pigmented and not as glossy in its sheen–but color-wise, they are the same. If you have drier lips, Cyber will be a better bet for you–it’s not as clingy or as dry as Smoked Purple, which has a more matte finish.

Is this the right purple for you? Would you wear it?

The Sultry Season is a series of posts featuring deep, rich shades of brown, berry, plum, and wine lipsticks and lipglosses — just right for autumn — that runs through October 2010.

So I own this and loooooooooove it!!! But compared to your pictures mine looks a few shades darker… I believe I’m NW 25… (haven’t been to a counter to check again in a little while) Anyway… is there some special way you swatched this? I would love to be able to get it to come out like yours also.

I have smoked purple and such is, as you said, such an intense shade, i wear it with very very natural eyes. A light brown in the crease, a lot of mascara and the lipstick do pretty much all the look!

Would you consider this a dupe for MUFE #49 lipstick that was also featured in “The Sultry Season?” Which do you like better if you had to choose?

nunuiviet Avatar

sorry but this colour is not my cup of tea, plus i don’t think it will flatter anyone with any skin one, i mean this colour will best suit a make up for a horror movie, just too ugly

I don’t know if I am the only unrepentant adult goth on the boards, but Cyber is my favorite lipstick of all time. Much imitated, still never duplicated. Fabulous with a very pale face and major eyeliner. I’ve worn it on and off for a decade.

No, you are not the only one! I’m a 44 year old ElderGoth and MAC Cyber is my favorite lipstick ever! Although I have to say, Fabulously F/W is almost the same color, a bit smoother though so not quite as dark.

This was my second MAC lipstick, after Fluid, aged 17, 14 years ago! I was a goth and I think I finished the tube and bought it a second time! Takes me right back.

But I’ve grown out of that phase now and realise it made my skin so sallow (I’m an NC42). But it’s a cool shade if you can pull it off.

Not really, Cyber is dark like this on everyone. Sometimes it can be too dark so it’s better put on with a brush, that way you can control how light or dark you want it. Violetta Davis and Iman are two very different skin tones by the way. Iman is lighter.
I have always loved Cyber and glad it’s been perm for so long! I use it lightly with glosses

I love Smoked Purple and I love this too. Can you please post a comparison swatch over your arm? Since I don’t have a PRO store near, I want to order it by telephone, but I would not, of course, being able to see the two colours together.
So, please, add a swatch! (puppy eyes!)

Vale Avatar

Ehm, maybe it is a silly question but… so, if they are identical… why there are two? o_O
Can you tell me the differences? I have to order from the shop in Milan and I can’t go there to actually see the products 🙁

Out of Cyber and Smoked Purple, which do you prefer? And why?
Which do you think lasts longer on the lips?

Dark colors like those really compliment me, and I don’t have dry lips like you were talking about, so I really don’t know which to get.

I bought this for a wedding I went to in June, I paired it with black liquid liner and a grey one shouldered dress with light purple stripes in it. I pulled off a super awesome look that everyone loved! I definitely stood out yet felt super comfortable wearing my new favorite lipstick- totally knocked “Brave” right out of my everyday make-up bag!

I’ve never worn a dark-purple lipstick before, but this one is hot! I’m really debating whether or not I should get it.

It looks great on you. Love these kind of bold colours whenever I see them on other people. Maybe I’ll try it.

Thanks for swatching it. 🙂

This looks so fantastic! I am slowly and surely switching my lipstick obsession from glittery pink (how it was a few years ago) to deep dark reds and burgundies… I think this will be a must have for me! Even though I am the color of a white bed sheet, I think it will look pretty darn cool! Thanks, Christine! 🙂

Wah, good swatches and post. I really love that you explain the difference between similare shades. It’s so helpful. ^^ I have start reading your website more frequently now since many of your posts are so helpful, and I don’t need to bother asking about dupes or differences of many of your posts since you bring up that kind of questions. ^^

Cyber is so damn gorgerous! *_* I love purple, plum, berry, rose and wine lip colors. Cyber reminds me of Vamp it up by Wet n Wild (I don’t have it though, but I seen swatches of it, its slightly more blue toned tho). Cyber is probably one of my top 10 shopping-list (I don’t have any MAC Lipsticks yet :'( but gonna buy some in a few month since I’m first collecting MAC Eyeshadows… -_- I am a Mac newbie. I don’t have a store near my town, i have to either travel 2 hours with train/car or order online which sucks).
I often wear dark eyes, subtile cheekcolor and dark lip colors since i am huge fan of the gothic fashions so this lipcolor will fun to have. 😀 Kinda annoying I sucks at applying dark lipsticks tho, never get even and I am too lazy using lipliners. :/ So for everyday, I tend to choose sheer & glossy lip colors.

Unfortunatly here in Sweden,I can’t shop from that website. :/
There is only one store online that I can order MAC from. But I thinking of getting lipsticks and base products there (and get eyeshadow/blush pot pans when I am going to the towns/Cities who have it, which is currently ONLY ONE STORE in Stockholm). :/
And I cant return lipsticks back here either, the return-policies is a bit different, like the packaging must not be open so if I open a lipstick tube I must keep it, but if I got wrong lipstick I can return it. -___-;;
People who live outside europe has it lucky with the price and returning products. Oo Mac Lipstick cost 33-34 dollars here.. O.O;;
