MAC Cockney Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “sheer yellow red with multi-dimensional pearl” with a Lustre finish. It’s a luminous, orange-red with very fine, barely-there gold shimmer. Chanel Coromandel is more orange Guerlain Genna is a touch more orange but similar. MAC Ruffian Red is not as warm-toned. Clarins Red Prodige is similar in color and texture/sheen. MAC Strut Your Stuff is brighter.  Cockney is part of the permanent range.

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve reviewed Cockney, and when I first did, it was semi-opaque–there was some translucency–but when I applied the shade from Year of the Snake, it was closer to opaque than anything resembling sheer. There’s a really subtle translucent quality to this version, but you and I both know this is not sheer! (And even the previous tube I had, it wasn’t sheer.)  At the end of the day, I look to the brand to give me guidance on what their product is supposed to do and look like, and this just isn’t sheer.

The Lustre finish really sings here, because it gives a shiny, luminous finish that’s reflective but not frosted or metallic.  It just looks lush and juicy on, even though there’s no gloss!  When I wore this shade, it lasted for five hours on the lips (which is particularly long for a Lustre finish!), but it was a bit drying (on par with my experience with Lustres, though).  The embossing of the snake pattern on the lipstick did not seem to affect the texture or quality of the lipstick. I was also surprised that there was no price increase for the embossing.

I had been holding off on Cockney because I have no use for anything but opaque lip products. I’m pretty excited to read this review and off to buy it- thanks!

I’ve been ignoring this shade whenever I pass by the MAC counter., maybe now’s the right time to buy one. I like your blush, by the way. What did you use? 🙂

On eyes: MAC Once Upon a Time Eyeshadow, MAC Aztec Brick Eyeshadow, MAC Altered State Eyeshadow, MAC Carbon Eyeshadow, Tarina Tarantino Ultraviolet Eyeliner, Dior Iconic Mascara. On cheeks: MAC Shell Pearl Beauty Powder. On lips: MAC Cockney Lipstick.

The only drawbacks were: slightly drying (and some readers find this true of Lustres, like me, while others love them for their hydration!) + TOO much pigmentation, LOL! It is SO SO counter-intuitive to take away points for pigmentation, I know.

I skipped over this when I made my order for the Shell Pearl powder, but now I’m starting to rethink it. The embossing is so pretty. I just wish the snake designs were on the tube as well. 🙁

This was actually my First Mac lipstick 🙂 It is quite drying, but a very nice red for my pale skintone! Nice glossy finish! This version totally looks more pigmented though… that’s weird!

What a lovely shade of red!

It’s bold, but not too bold for me… I think translucency helps a lot.

I don’t wear red much at all, but I’d love to wear this one. ^^

This red seems like a nice break from all my matte ones! Lustres were my first Mac lipsticks.

Christine, how does this compare to Love Bug, if you have it?

May sound silly: Are yellow undertones good for yellow-undertoned skin? Because so far, blue undertoned lipcolors agree with my NC40.

Those born in the year of the snake like me think it is beautiful MAC celebrates the snake since each sign only comes/ returns every 12 years.

Knowing a little something about snakes I think this is a much lovelier and fitting tribute then snakeskin 🙁 since I am year of the dragon, I think this is as close as I can expect to get.

Meri Avatar

I am also a Dragon, the year that just passed, I wish they had made a tribute to the dragon, the snake is lovely and according to Chinese signs if you ever see one in your house you will never go hungry and it’s good fortune. The colors are beautiful but since they are in the permanent collection I passed in favor the Archie Girls line.

Ana Avatar

I love the color but I think there are other High End/Drugstore versions that are very similar. I’m pretty sure I own something that is very close to this color.

Just got this today and I’m in LOVE with the serpentine embossing. However, since I am an opaque kinda gal I was a little sad about the pigmentation which is SILLY since a little Redd liner will bring out the sauciness of this lipstick. I used to work at a Chinese Immersion school that did stilt walking in the Chinese New Years parade each year- yay for the year of the snake!

Is it similar or different with MAC Mineralize Rich Everyday Diva? I can’t decide. I know the other one is cherry red with blue based, what about Cockney? Thanks
