With over 130 different lipsticks swatched, tested, and reviewed in 2022 priced at $15 or less, they were pretty incredible across the board. One of the more game-changing formulas I tried this year was Maybelline Super Stay Vinyl Ink Lipcolors; they are an ultra long-wearing, liquid lipstick with a high-shine (vinyl, if you will) finish.

Sephora also released a new formula this past year (Satin Hydrating Lipstick), which was another solid entry from the house collection. Kaleidos Lip Clay was new-to-me (and they dropped some new shades for 2022, as well) but another fantastic option for something more affordable and in a matte finish.

We cannot forget ColourPop, given that I think I’d only be working for half the year should they ever stop with their weekly launches, but there were some lovely shades of Fresh Kiss Lip Creme and Lux Lipstick launched this year.

Temptalia’s Favorite Lipsticks (Under $15) | 2022

After careful consideration of the 130+ shades eligible for this year’s favorites list, I narrowed it down to a tight list of 15 excellent lipsticks that I really enjoyed testing.

My methodology: If you’re unfamiliar with how I like to do my year-end favorites, here’s the low down: I pull from the products I reviewed in 2021, regardless of whether they were new, limited edition, or an established range I’ve only just gotten around to reviewing. These are personal favorites, so they may or may not be the highest rated products reviewed during the year (though they will tend to be better rated, naturally!). (You can check out the best of 2021 posts if you missed last year’s.)

Your Year in Review: Lipstick Edition

I thought it would be interesting to read through how readers used products throughout the year, what favorites emerged, what products fell by the wayside… so, if you want to join in, copy and paste the questions below and add your answers via a comment! Feel free to break it down by price (under $15) if that makes sense to you since there is an over $15 post coming shortly.

  • What was your most used lipstick? Least used?
  • Will you repurchase it or will you look for something new?
  • Was lipstick a big part of your routine in 2022?

Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

What was your most used lipstick?
Probably ColourPop Ultra Blotted Lips in Zuma and Starling. We were still using masks at work most of the year and there were easy to wear underneath. For going out MAC Coffee and Cigs in their liquid formula for some wear.
Least used?
Anything bright and or glossy. I never use lip gloss.
Will you repurchase it or will you look for something new? Probably just move on to something else in my stash, I’m trying to go through what I have!
Was lipstick a big part of your routine in 2022?
Not at all! Aside from the day the mask mandate was lifted at work (MAC Coffee and Cigs) and Halloween (ColourPop Moon Dancer), I didn’t even bother with lipstick half the time.

All of my lipsticks fall into the under $15 category because lipsticks here in Australia are either the DS line or very expensive – there is no inbetween
So my favourite brands are Maybelline, CP and Shiseido – I was abile to get the Shiseido Visionary Gel lipsticks from an online Australian retailer for under $15 – whereas in Mecca Cosmetica Australia they retail for $43….. Chanel retails here for around $90…so very expensive.
I haven’t purchased any lipsticks from CP this year because their shades did not suit me.

Will you repurchase it or will you look for something new?
I am always after a good lipstick in my favourite shades at the under $15 price and have recently started looking at Flower Beauty (thanks to Celesta on this blog). So I am going to get some of those.
I got my DIL for Christmas Autumn Rose (after seeing it on Celesta in an Insta photo) and it is beautiful and she loves it.

Was lipstick a big part of your routine in 2022?
Absolutely – I only wear lipsticks.

What was your most used lipstick? Least used? – My most used lipstick always and forever is MAC Velvet Teddy! It’s hard to identify a 2nd most used, but I wore Sephora LipStories Autumn Blaze a few times, so probably that.

Will you repurchase it or will you look for something new? – I will repurchase Velvet Teddy as long as it’s around!

Was lipstick a big part of your routine in 2022? – I hardly ever wear it anymore, as an aftermath of 2020.
