Kevyn Aucoin ElectroPop Pro Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches

Electropop
Kevyn Aucoin Electropop Pro Eyeshadow Palette ($57.00 for 0.60 oz.) is a new, limited edition 12-pan palette that featurse 11 very shimmery/metallic shades and one more satin shade (Blackout). The formula is described as having “one swipe payoff” with a “smooth texture [that] glides on effortlessly.” For “maximum color payoff,” the brand advises to use fingertips for application. The texture of most shades was quite dense, more emollient/cream-like, and worked best with flat, firm or dense synthetic brushes. Fingertips worked well for all-over the lid application, but I felt like a fair amount of product stuck to my fingertip and wouldn’t transfer well onto my lid as it was too much pressure to do so (compared to using fingertips and applying swatches on an arm, where that amount of pressure is just fine).
I also found that sometimes the formula skipped a bit over primer, so it may take some experimenting with the type of primer or how thin of a layer to use with this formula. I was able to pickup product the best by pushing at the surface and then going over the loosened powder to get it onto the brush and then patted it onto my lid and used gentle pulling motions to spread the color outward. The majority of the eyeshadows in the palette were pigmented, fairly blendable, and lasted between six and eight hours but most had creased after eight hours of wear. They were a little finicky to use due to just how dense the formula often was, and a few shades were either prone to emphasizing lid texture (like Light) or were tough to spread out without getting a more ragged application (like Laser and Hardwire).

Light
Light is a very light gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The texture was denser and thicker, which made it a little thick on the lid, so a dampened brush went a long way to smoothing out the eyeshadow and keeping it from emphasizing lid texture. It had nearly opaque coverage that lasted for seven and a half hours on me before creasing.

Beam
Beam is a muted, medium gold with warm, yellow undertones and a frosted sheen. The texture was soft, smooth, and not quite as dense or as cream-like as the other shades. It was one of the few shades that I felt didn’t have a learning curve. It had rich color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin and stayed on well for eight hours.

Ultraviolet
Ultraviolet is a medium mauve with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had medium coverage, which was buildable to semi-opaque coverage with two to three passes of product. The eyeshadow had a drier, firmer texture that made it harder to pickup product with brushes. I noticed signs of creasing after seven hours of wear.

Charge
Charge is a medium, golden brown with warm, yellow undertones and a metallic sheen. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer that covered the lid evenly and was easy to diffuse along the edges. The texture was smooth, moderately dense but not too thick or too firm in the pan, so it wasn’t a challenge to apply. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Switch
Switch is a bright, medium fuchsia pink with cooler undertones and a metallic sheen. The eyeshadow was opaque in a single layer, while the consistency was dense but not too stiff or firm in the pan. It applied evenly and blended out without issue. This shade started to crease on me after seven and a half hours of wear.

Laser
Laser is a medium pink with warm undertones and chunks of glitter. It had sheer coverage with a drier, denser consistency that was extremely difficult to work with. It did not matter if I used fingertips, synthetic or natural brushes, dry or damp brushes–the eyeshadow did not translate well on the lid and looked like a splotchy mess of pink glitter but little else. What little was on seemed to last about six hours and had moderate fallout over time.

Heat
Heat is a medium-dark, coppery red with warm, orange undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The eyeshadow had opaque color coverage in a single layer. Fuse
Fuse is a medium plum with warm undertones and a sparkling finish. It appeared darker in the pan than it applied, and it had a moderate amount of larger glitter in it. There was slight fallout during application and throughout the wear, but it wasn’t as much as I’ve seen since the texture was creamier and seemed to hold the glittery bits better. This shade stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me before creasing.

Amp
Amp is a medium, green-leaning teal with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. Hardwire
Hardwire is a medium-dark, bluish purple with subtle, cool undertones and a sparkling sheen. The eyeshadow was extremely dense and on the thicker side, which translated into a texture that did not transfer that well to skin, even when using fingertips. The powder skipped a bit and looked patchy. I had to really pack it on to get opaque coverage. It lasted for seven hours before creasing on me.

Blackout
Blackout is a deep black with neutral undertones and a satin finish. It was richly pigmented and had a very cream-like texture that was denser and firmer in the pan, though I found it surprisingly blendable on the lid. A little went a long way, and I recommend flat, synthetic brushes for initial application and then a clean, fluffy, synthetic brush for blending out the edges. Ok, so you have some idea of how much product I order. I have NEVER returned anything to Sephora (other than items that arrived broken). On the day I received this palette, I scheduled a USPS Returns pickup. Yeah, it’s that bad. Sorry to see the one you received was equally as lousy. For the price (and brand) I expected much better.
Oh no!
It is an interesting palette from Kevin, not one that we have seen before. The shades were beautiful, but it was a shame that they were generally difficult to apply. This has been a reocurring theme with a lot of metallic palettes I have noticed.
The shade I really love is Impulse – that beautiful blue shade is divine.
I do think that if you are into metallic eyeshadows, the BH Foil Eyes seems to be the go as it contains most of the dupes for nearly all the metallic palettes you have reviewed Christine, and it has a great overall rating.
Thank you for the review and your eye looks are beautiful.
BH Foil Eyes is a great suggestion!
I’ll 3rd that! Foil Eyes blows the new ones off the block!
Yeah, got foil eyes as an xmas gift for a coworker, when C reviewed positively, back in the summer. You are so right.
Easy pass of an expensive palette. Thanks for the review !
No problem, Robin! 🙂
As much as I am really loving the color combo here, I feel like I not only have dupes for most of the shades, but that the ones I have are less fussy to apply. I do wish that the quality had been consistent across all 12 eyeshadows.
Thank goodness for dupes 😉
The eye looks you did with this are breathtaking. It saddens me somewhat that the KA shadows never reach the great performance level. Anything from a brand that carries on the legacy of a giant in the field should be exemplary. This should have approximated Bijoux Royale for quality and ease of app.
Thank you, KJH!
Yes! Yes. I couln’t agree more. I was, and still is a big fan of KA, I have his books and I still get inspiration from them. He was so gifted and was taken away from us at an early age.
I sometime wonder if he himself would have launched a makeup brand and if so what he would have done.
Kevyn is largely responsible for the nude/naked looks we have now, and for the (albeit slow) movement towards inclusivity. He started with U II (Revlon) in the early 80s. His books are phenomenal, and far better showcase his legacy than the brand that ‘carries on’ his name. It’s fun, but very sad, to imagine where he would be now. He certainly never stood still. I imagine he would still have a core naked/ contour/face shaping line, but that color would play a bigger part. My fave is Bloodroses, in all forms. Glad that s.o. gets why these eye offerings represent more than just an it-could-have-been-better issue.
I’m also glad I’m not alone remembering his genious.
It had good color selection too bad about the quality. I don’t plan to buy anymore eyeshadows this year as I have way too many anyway . But even I’m disappointed!
How sad! What beautiful colors, in particular Hardwire, Lazer, Switch & Ultraviolet, and almost all of them did poorly pigmentation wise. Great for me though, one less palette temptation!
Some really poor performance – D’s and F’s??? Embarrassing for a brand that I thought was associated with a smaller collection of products that were unique and performed well.
It’s a real shame these colors are so hard to apply. That said, I love the icy blue look you created with the palette!
Shoot. This is really pretty, but if it skips over primer, it’s a no-go for me. Money saved.
This didn’t seem like such a failure for other but I’ll steer clear! YIKES, you’re the third person I’ve known say it was terrible.
This really intrigued me at first..Mostly b/c of it’s more convenient packaging. I have so many palettes, many that are just a pain or take up far too much room for what they are. But, the colors remind me so much of the urban decay metals palette and that one got an A- (I think) – And don’t they have a similar shade called Amp? This looks like a more condensed dupe for that one. I know the shades are not exact, but even the swatches look similar to some in the metals. I love palettes of convenience but I already have many of these shades and I love my UD heavy metals palette..I’m not fan of it’s packaging (mirror in the middle, etc) but they did a stellar job this year with the formulation & those shades look so good on. I think this is an easy pass for me – I am also not a fan of “high maintenance” shadows. (as in needing to use my finger, difficult to blend, etc – makes it all a chore lol!) Beautiful eye looks though! I agree with another that they are breathtaking on you! Thank you for your review!
