Kat Von D Rust Shade + Light Quad Review, Photos, Swatches
Kat Von D Rust Shadow + Light Quad
Kat Von D Rust Shadow + Light Quad ($26.00 for 0.21 oz.) contains four shades designed to work together and are named to help guide application–Base, Define, Contour, and Highlight–though you can obviously go wherever your creativity takes you. This is a warmer, richer take on neutrals, because of the inclusion of the more darker orange shade.
Rust (Base) is a light-medium pink with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff but was moderately powdery, so it did sheer out and was hard to apply at full intensity without a tacky base (to give it something to really stick to) — traditional primers were not enough. On me, the color lasted for seven and a half hours before fading slightly. Lancome My French #3 (LE, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). Melt Cosmetics Pink Leather (LE, ) is brighter (95% similar). bareMinerals Fortune (LE, ) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Viseart Petale (PiP, ) is cooler (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Lover #4 (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). Makeup Geek Sorbet (DC, $6.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Frisco (LE, $17.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Pink Sands (LE, $17.00) is darker (85% similar). Chanel Rose de Mai (P, $29.50) is darker (80% similar). Natasha Denona Bare (336CM) (PiP, ) is darker, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Rust (Define) is a muted, dark brown with warm, red undertones and a matte finish. It had very nearly opaque pigmentation that applied without losing intensity. The texture was a smidgen powdery, though it was very smooth. Of all the “Define” shades, this one was the easiest to use and most blendable; it still required some extra work, but it wasn’t frustrating to use overall. It lasted for eight hours before showing signs of fading. Makeup by Mario Ethereal Eyes #12 (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). LORAC Bark (LE, $19.00) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Corduroy (P, $17.00) is cooler (95% similar). Hourglass Rich Brown (PiP, ) is cooler (95% similar). Smashbox Angles (PiP, ) is cooler (95% similar). Tarte Sippy Sippy (LE, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). ColourPop Bonfire (LE, $4.50) is cooler (95% similar). Anastasia Fudge (DC, $12.00) is warmer (95% similar). Dose of Colors Cheens (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). Laura Mercier Truffle (PiP, $23.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Laura Mercier Hot Chocolate (LE, $23.00) is cooler (90% similar). Too Faced Tutti Cutie (PiP, $16.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Huda Beauty Toffee Brown #7 (PiP, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Anastasia Hot Chocolate (P, $12.00) is darker (90% similar). Huda Beauty Smokey #7 (PiP, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Big Brooch (LE, $4.50) is more shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Anastasia Violeta (LE, $12.00) is cooler (90% similar). Rust (Contour) is a muted, medium-dark rusty orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nice pigmentation with a really smooth, finely-milled texture that was just a smidgen powdery but was one of the least powdery shades across the four quads. I didn’t have any issues with the color blending and diffusing, and it wore for eight hours on me. Tarte Warmth (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Anastasia C3 (Norvina Vol. 3) (LE, ) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). ColourPop Dig It (LE, $4.50) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). ColourPop Palms Away (LE, $4.50) is warmer (95% similar). ColourPop Pass It On (LE, $4.50) is lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Wild Thing (PiP, $19.00) is brighter (95% similar). ColourPop It's a Rush (PiP, $4.50) is darker (95% similar). Natasha Denona Sinai (121CM) (PiP, ) is brighter (90% similar). ColourPop Chillin' (LE, $4.50) is cooler (90% similar). KKW Beauty Selfish (PiP, ) is cooler (90% similar). Too Faced Fresh Picked (PiP, $16.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Rust (Highlight) is a light beige with warm undertones and a satin finish. There is very, very subtle micro-shimmer that gives it a less-than-matte finish, but it isn’t overtly shimmery or frosty on. It had fairly good pigmentation with a soft, lightly powdery texture that was smooth and finely-milled to the touch. The eyeshadow blended out well on the skin and lasted for eight hours. Dior Golden Reflections #4 (LE, )(100% similar). Smashbox Alabaster (P, ) is darker (95% similar). Laura Mercier Buttercream (PiP, $23.00) is brighter (95% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | The quads contain the Shade + Light Eyeshadow formula, which is supposed to have “high pigment” with a “silky and blendable” consistency and long-wearing. I think if you enjoyed Kat Von D’s recent eyeshadow palettes, I think you’ll like these; they are very soft and smooth with a finely-milled, velvety texture that can kick up an excess amount of powder any time something touches the pan’s surface. I notice an abundance of fall out (surprisingly!) when working with the eyeshadows, but a very smooth base is critical to maximize adhesion to the skin without getting unevenness/darkening due to the looser nature of the powder paired with the more matte finishes. The lighter shades seem chalky on my skin tone and have strong white bases. The darkest shades blend better when mixed with one of the lighter shades rather than alone, and I actually tried blending them over primer to see if that helped, but it was marginally better–patience and multiple tools (clean brushes are key for blending these out), while the light and mid-tone shades were easy to blend out. The wear varied between seven and a half and eight hours for me, which is consistent with my past experiences using this formula.

Looks fab on you, Christine!
Thanks, Claire!
Wow, I think so far, this is the best performing quad, the swatches look really nice. The colors remind me of the Too Faced Peach palette, but better performing
Not a total surprise – neutrals always seem to be easier to get right than color!
I like this color combo but I’m covered on dupes. I love your pop of green! Totally copying that!
Thank you, Ginny!
I really like how this one looks. It doesn’t sound as powdery as the plum. Maybe.
It was easier to use!
Fire from the Stila ‘in the know’ palette is really close to the contour shade in this palette.
That is great news!
If I didn’t already have so many similar shades, I know I would buy this one! But I’m literally up to my gills in warm, rusty, and even orangey neutrals. Like drowning in them!
lol!
I like the base thing but I wouldn’t wear the rest. Looks great on you.
Thank you, Erin!
Man, I feel like the light pink base shade is kind of out of place in this quad.
I could see that!
Ohhh – way too orangey for me, but those mattes look great for matte lovers.
These palettes are worth checking out for someone who loves mattes!
I love these colors immensely! Also, that pop of green paired with the orangey-rust totally does it for me.
Glad you liked the color combo!
Love these shades, especially rust! That’s the one that makes the palette again for me 🙂
Yay!
wish rust was sold individually .
i have a weakness for orange eyeshadows .
love that you paired teaspoon with this look . it screams spring .
😀
I wonder if she’ll ever do matte singles.
Is it just me or does the base shade remind anyone else of Calamine lotion? LOL I had a chicken pox flashback. No? Just me? Alrighty then. But as always you created a beautiful look!
LOL!
I want this palette just for the orange shade but I can see that I already have a dupe (Tangerine from Lorac Mega Pro 2) but I got a BI discount and I don’t want to waste it and Tangerine it’s kind of small, LOL ? a lot of excuses ? too bad Sephora is not selling the Monarch palette anymore, it was on my wish list ?
