Sand Haze

Huda Beauty Sand Haze Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette ($29.00 for 0.20 oz.) is a new palette that includes five matte eyeshadows and four shimmer eyeshadows. The matte eyeshadows were very powdery with a drier, thinner feel, so they applied best after the shimmer eyeshadows, which were thicker and could lift away some of the sheerer mattes if applied over them. The quality was all over the map, but most of the shades had issues with respect to pigmentation, texture, fallout, and longevity.

I only just caught that the Haze Obsessions palettes only contain 0.20 oz. compared to past Obsessions palettes, which have contained 0.45 oz. They seem to have the same physical size with respect to the compacts, so I’m actually not certain how they managed to have such a huge reduction in weight just by looking at it. It’s possible that the shimmer formula is somehow lighter but filling up the same volume of space, or else the actual pans hold less.

Sand Haze #1

Sand Haze #1 is a light copper with strong, warm orange undertones and a metallic finish with faint sparkle. It had good color coverage in a single layer, and it applied decently with a dry brush, though there was some fallout. The texture was slightly drier and felt more firmly-pressed into the pan with some thickness on my lid, so it was more prone to emphasizing skin texture. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me before fading visibly.

Ingredients

MICA, CALCIUM ALUMINUM BOROSILICATE, DIMETHICONE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, MAGNESIUM MYRISTATE, BORON NITRIDE, PHENOXYETHANOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE, SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE, TIN OXIDE, SILICA.

Sand Haze #2

Sand Haze #2 is a very light plum with strong, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The eyeshadow had excellent pigmentation with a soft, smooth consistency that wasn’t too dense nor too softly pressed into the pan, so it picked up beautifully with a brush and had great adhesion. It stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

Ingredients

SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE, MICA, DIMETHICONE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, SILICA, MAGNESIUM MYRISTATE, BORON NITRIDE, PHENOXYETHANOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, TIN OXIDE, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE, CALCIUM ALUMINUM BOROSILICATE.

Sand Haze #3

Sand Haze #3 is a muted, medium-dark plum with warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had a soft, blendable consistency but was moderately powdery, so there was fallout during application (even when I tried to be careful) and you could see the powder diffuse in the air as it was applied. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with a touch more after most of the blending was done of the first layer. The color wore decently for seven and a half hours before showing signs of fading.

Ingredients

MICA, ZEA MAYS (CORN) STARCH, SILICA, MAGNESIUM MYRISTATE, DIMETHICONE, MAGNESIUM STEARATE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, PHENOXYETHANOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE.

Sand Haze #4

Sand Haze #4 has a soft, rosy brown base with flecks of lavender and gold sparkle. The texture was smooth, dense, and on the firmer side, and it was best applied by jabbing and pushing a dry brush against the surface, which helped to dislodge product off of the surface of the pan that could be patted and pressed onto the lid. When I used a dampened brush, it caused the formula to be more slippery and resulted in patchy application. A fingertip could work but seemed to compact the eyeshadow quite a bit, which made the next use more challenging. It lasted for eight hours but had some fallout over time.

Ingredients

CALCIUM ALUMINUM BOROSILICATE, SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE, DIMETHICONE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, MICA, MAGNESIUM MYRISTATE, SILICA, PHENOXYETHANOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, TIN OXIDE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE.

Sand Haze #5

Sand Haze #5 is a light-medium peach with warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer color payoff with an extremely powdery texture that dropped lots of powder during application below the lid and visibly dusted away as I blended it on my lid. It seemed to stay on for five and a half hours before fading.

Ingredients

MICA, ZEA MAYS (CORN) STARCH, SILICA, MAGNESIUM MYRISTATE, DIMETHICONE, MAGNESIUM STEARATE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, PHENOXYETHANOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE.

Sand Haze #6

Sand Haze #6 is a light, yellowy peach with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation that did not build up. The texture was very powdery, prone to sheering out, and had a lot of fallout and a tendency to cause ashiness when combined with some of the “deeper” mattes in the palette. This shade wore decently for five hours before fading noticeably.

Ingredients

MICA, ZEA MAYS (CORN) STARCH, SILICA, MAGNESIUM MYRISTATE, DIMETHICONE, MAGNESIUM STEARATE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, PHENOXYETHANOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE.

Sand Haze #7

Sand Haze #7 is a light, peachy orange with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had medium color payoff in a single layer, which was hard to build up. The eyeshadow had a more powdery consistency, which gave it a thin, drier feel that was prone to sheering out and having fallout during initial application and blending. It lasted for five hours before fading visibly.

Sand Haze #8

Sand Haze #8 is a darker, coppery red with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which applied best with a dry brush but one had to push and jab at the surface a bit to get an even layer of product to apply. The texture was just drier and firmer with a thicker consistency that emphasized skin texture. It stayed on for seven and a half hours before showing signs of wear.

Ingredients

MICA, DIMETHICONE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, MAGNESIUM MYRISTATE, BORON NITRIDE, SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE, PHENOXYETHANOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE, CALCIUM ALUMINUM BOROSILICATE, TIN OXIDE, SILICA. Sand Haze #9

Sand Haze #9 is a dusty, medium plum with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had rich pigmentation in a single layer, despite having a fairly powdery consistency that was prone to fallout. I could see the powder dissipate into the air as I blended the product out, so I was surprised that there was actual coverage on my lid and nearly opaque at that (and then I could build it back up). It wore decently for seven and a half hours before fading a bit.

While I LOVE the shade combination going on here, I think I’ll just wait for ABH Soft Glam to go back on sale like it periodically does. This one is actually very good overall, except for those 3 browbone (for me) shades that all look washed out.

A question I’ve been meaning to ask, so I might as well do it on a horrible palette! I’m not understanding something about the “application” rating. For instance, in the case of #4 in this palette, it sounds extremely finicky to apply, with several methods tried, and none doing especially well, but got a 4.5 for application, which would be an A-, when it sounds like a D or F? So I’m obviously not understanding what goes into the metric? Just something I’ve been wondering about! Thank you!

It looks at the ability to apply in total – not just the tool used but does it go on evenly, is it easy to apply it, does it blend out, etc. The texture and formula were more where it was deficient – once I was able to get product off of the surface (texture problem), I didn’t have issues applying it and blending it out on my eye. Some things that I look at can have an impact on more than one category, but it depends on how things play together and what we’re talking about. There are over 50 different characteristics across categories that I look at (not all apply to every product)!

Another brand that has released sub standard products (like CP) – it’s hard to take when they have released such sterling products in the past. This palette, whilst it has some lovely shades and appears to be more cohesive, is not really true to its label ‘Sand” – last time I was at the beach, there was nothing pinky about it. Just like the Khaki palette, that contained no Khaki shades, this one doesn’t really live up to its moniker.

I don’t have anything from this brand. So far nothing has tempted me. I do like the look of this palette, I like the colour story, pity it and the other two has been so all over the map as this is one I could possibly have purchased.
