Guerlain Gina Rouge G Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Guerlain Gina Rouge G Lipstick ($51.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “bright golden red.” It’s a slightly muted, medium orange-red with warm undertones and fine gold shimmer. MAC Excite (LE, $16.00) is sheerer. MAC Fashion Trip (LE, $22.00) is similar. Bite Beauty Grandifolia (LE, $28.00) is less shimmery, redder. Tom Ford Beauty Firecracker (06) (LE, $49.00) is lighter.Givenchy Carmin Escarpin (306) (P, $36.00) is redder. Giorgio Armani #300 (P, $32.00) is less shimmery. Maybelline Neon Red (P, $7.49) is less shimmery, brighter. Guerlain Genna (LE, $51.00) is less red. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I was sorting through my Rouge Gs and moving discontinued/limited edition shades to their own containers, so I could have the permanent shades all in one place (to make it easier to find them). And then, something crazy occurred–I discovered I was missing one! I immediately rectified that and bought Gina over the weekend. It had rich, opaque color coverage that didn’t look heavy, while the consistency was lightweight with a light emollient quality that made it slide over the lips like butter but able to stay in place. The color lasted for six hours on me and was nicely hydrating over time, and it left a light reddish stain behind. It’s never a hardship to test a Rouge G, though my wallet feels quite differently!

Hahaha I know! I never discovered this one!

You should check out Estee Lauder Fierce Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick. That’s also more like a coral red, albeit without the awesome shimmer!

Oooo maybe this will be my first Rouge G. Do you think the muted quality of it will translate on fair skin? Or will it be bright as orange ever is.

Brenda Avatar

So pretty! I actually went to the Sephora website after reading this, but ouch, $53 CDN – not sure I can swallow that. But I still want to try it!

Ah Rouge Gs, heavy, great coverage, heavy “meteorites” scent (I think the scent was released as meteorites as a perfume), heavy in the purse and heavy on the wallet 🙁

Thank you so much for this! I’ve on the hunt for a red Orange lipstick. Would you say that this formula is the most hydrating you have tried? I Have super dry lips. Would you recommend this over the Tom Ford red Orange lipstick you listed above?

Well I gave this the good ol try … DUDE, what is WITH my lips?? It turned a BRIGHT NEON PINK! Barely with a hint of coral DMs no shimmer! 🙁 I thought it would blend with my Berry lips and make a nice golden red.. Obviously.. Not the case. Still can’t make red on these dark babies.. My old go to was DCd and way used up.. Any possibility, please, of a good lippie for my sensitive lips to make a dark blood red golden shimmer? Dark Berry & golden red seemed to create an oxblood idea.. I ENVY YOUR natural COLOR! You can wear lipstick! Hmm wear black under it? Too much trouble.

Hi Christine! Thank you! I think a coffee one would do! Beige just gives me a slighted muted pink color. The result against your warm skin makes a difference, I believe, as well. But usually colors blend.. I’m Going to have to try the liner and I have higher hopes now for my unopened G # 09 Galante.. Lips are tricky.. Will try your advice! Thank you! 😀

Now that’s the one thing I cannot do! With my lips, I’ve been there & tried that with color canceling items, concealers, 100s spent on every brand to nudify my lips and the layers make it worse! When I was younger, my mom remembers me spending everywhere to try to nudify my lips.. Last year I finally bought YSL Rouge Volupte in 2 Silky Lingerie or something.. And it works! But that formula can only be worn alone.. Yet I get a pretty paler beigy nude color that is so flattering! Purples have resulted in peaches, rose and Reds.. I wish there was a loner that could do it all. Anyone else have this problem who is Caucasian? You’d have a field day doing my makeup, Christine! 😛

This is such a beautiful color and the slight shimmer in it is so nice. The makeup and lipstick look you did looks so pretty. I’m really loving this 1 too 🙁 but that pricetag is killing me, especially with my growing fall and holiday list.

Oh no! Every time you review a Rouge G my heart sinks a little because I just know that I’ll need to add it to my collection. 😛
This is no exception. It looks gorgeous on you! I need this in my life….along with Gala, Gladys and Rouge Parade. No matter how similar they are I need them all!

What a gorgeous lipstick! How could you have missed it?
I only have one lipstick from Guerlain, Madame Battifole(sp?) an I really like it. Lipstick in the price range of Guerlain isn’t something I buy very often, it has to be love.
I will certainly take atour around the Guerlain counter and check this one out. I saw Estée Lauder’s lipsticks mentioned. also lovely but so expensive here. Not sure exactly how expensive Guerlain is, but I am about to find out 🙂

Hello first Rouge G purchase! I was idly browsing them a week ago because I’d like a splurgy lipstick just this once. I think this is my colour.

So pretty on you! I am dying to try one of these along with the YSL. But, that price tag and all my recent “holiday set” purchasing is telling me to wait until after Christmas. So glad, this is not a LE! Wow! 6 hr wear without being drying. I was thinking i wanted to get more NARS audacious or try the YSL one in the fancy tube. They are closer to $35. But, looking at this,I am thinking you may be paying for the quality. I’d appreciate any opinions comparing these and/or any other “luxury brands” to brands like NARS. I recently bough a bunch of the Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks online . In all honesty, I don’t see what the stellar reviews are about. They are ok..but not special imo.

Christine Avatar

I will say that the texture of NARS’ Audacious and YSL Rouge Volupte (that’s my assumption — if you’re thinking about the Pur Couture, I think it is, that I don’t have experience with), those two are more similar to each other as they’re very creamy with a thicker consistency (not heavy or anything, just thicker) and glossier. Rouge Gs have a similar creaminess, but they aren’t as thick – they are pretty opaque but have a lighter look applied. I do prefer Rouge G above all other formulas still (even after all these years) for its long-wearing, hydrating qualities, but I tend to gravitate towards the finish in particular, as it has just that right level of shine, pearl, and color range.

I love how buttery and beautiful the Rouge G formula is, but I own Geisha and sadly on me it always bleeds around my lips even if I use a lip liner all over first (I use MAC Cherry) 🙁 At that price point, it’s something I can’t justify unless it performs amazingly well on me.

Hi Christine, if I’m not mistaken, you’re missing another shade too – Gilda (unless you have it and just didn’t review it?). It’s a gorgeous intense red with browny undertones and probably my favourite shade in the range since I find all the other glamorous reds like Gala, Garconne, Greta and Gwen to be too cool toned. You reviewed a shade called Geisha a few years ago and from your photos it looks similar to Gilda, but I don’t know how similar they are in real life since Geisha seems to have been discontinued. Maybe they just changed the name?
Also, some of the Rouge Gs you reviewed in the past, like Gipsy, aren’t in the swatch database. Will you add them later at any point? It would be great to be able to see all the shades at a glance. Thanks for all the great work you do! 🙂

Christine Avatar

Hi Kara,

I do have Gilda 🙂 They seemed to have discontinued a LOT of them, unfortunately! None of those old swatches will be added — basically, when we were adding photos into it, we put a cut off date based on how horrible photos were (and those are horrible)!

Lovely Christine, How does this compare with Guerlain Rouge Automatic in Coque d’ Or #120… Dying to know differences other than price. 😉 🙂 Thank you, doll! I think my obsession has gone to my lips now!!! Haha! 😀

Sometimes I wonder if this is the kind of’orange’ I might potentially get away with… but then I wonder if it would be ‘too red’ in a way. It’s a shame you can’t really have ‘cool orange’ LOL!

Someday, I will try a Rouge G! I like the reviews of them I read. I like many of the colours, I like that you can beat orcs to death with the packaging (the only thing I dislike about my Rouge Automatiques is how utterly lightweight their packaging is for a $57 lipstick – it’s saved by the neat mechanism, but still).. 😀
