#888

Guerlain #888 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a rich, medium-dark fuchsia pink with strong, cool undertones and iridescent violet pearl. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a smooth, lightweight texture that was emollient and lightly creamy so it glided across my lips without tugging. The texture was smoothing and comfortable to wear as the formula kept my lips hydrated over the six hours this shade wore well for. There was a faint stain left behind. It was listed as a top coat shade (though it can also be worn alone), so less intense coverage was expected, but this was rather pigmented.

Formula Overview

$36.00/0.12 oz. - $300.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "intense colour" with a hydrating base that includes things like jojoba and mango butter as well as hyaluronic acid (and gugul resin) to "help to smooth and plum up lips." I would describe the formula as somewhere between semi-opaque and opaque, often buildable, with a luminous sheen that seems like there's very, very fine pearl but less distinctive shimmer (except for the shades that are actually shimmery).

I find that the magic of the formula is in its finish--it's shiny, luminous, and absolutely smoothing on the lips without compromising wear (four to six hours, sometimes longer). The formula is very hydrating and comfortable to wear. They have a sweet, floral scent but no discernible taste to me. The updated shade range seems to have a stronger emphasis on mid-tones in coral and red and less beiges than before.

The Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Colors have been updated but mostly with respect to packaging and the shade range, as the formula itself has not been changed (per the brand). The lipsticks are now available as refills for $32.00 each, and then one can pick from an assortment of cases ($15.00 each), though each refill comes with a small, plastic cap that keeps the refill from drying out while waiting to be sold. The refill cap seems like it would be sufficient to keep the lipstick long-term, but I can't say from experience. I have not tested each shade for wear, but the shades I have tested, initial swatches and applications, and the like make the formula seem the same as before.

The old Rouge G cases do not fit on the new refills as the case doesn't stay on without a magnet (it just slides right off). I don't yet have any of the cases as they weren't available to me to purchase yet, but I plan to pick one or two up merely to see how they feel (probably the Original, to see if there was any weight change, and then something new).

A big upside to the refillable packaging is that they're actually significantly less expensive buying them piecemeal than buying it all-in-one. The original Rouge Gs were last sold at $58.00 for 0.12 oz., and now, the all-in-one price is effectively $47.00 for 0.12 oz. -- that's a nearly a 19% reduction in price.

#111

Guerlain #111 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium-dark, emerald green with subtle, warm undertones and cooler, finer green pearl paired with a luminous sheen. It had semi-opaque, buildable coverage (not up to fully opaque, though) with a lightweight, smooth consistency that had moderate slip but didn’t feel slippery on my lips. There was a touch of tackiness–enough to adhere well to the lips but not enough to feel truly sticky on. The texture made the lip color comfortable to apply and to wear, but it did not apply as evenly as it should have. It wore well for five hours and stained my lips very slightly. The formula was nicely hydrating over time.

#333

Guerlain #333 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a slightly muted, dark blue with strong, cool undertones and a luminous sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage with a lightly creamy, smooth consistency that had some slip but did not feel slippery on my lips. It is listed as a top coat shade (though it can also be worn alone), so the lack of coverage wasn’t unexpected, though the application was uneven on its own. I wasn’t convinced it worked that well for layering, either, as the slip paired with the denser tube made it hard to combine with other products unless using fingertips to mix (and then the effect ended up rather diluted–a general “slightly darker and cooler” effect). On its own, it wore well for five hours, left a slight stain behind, and was moisturizing.

Though the green and blue aren’t perfect, they still did better than a lot of high end brands at such non-traditional colors, which is nice to see!

Ditto Nancy! I so wanted for n°333 (blue) to work and be like the Guerlain lip swatch picture and it just isn’t, so I’m (trying) to get on with it. It’s only lipstick, eh? LOL

I think I’m going to dig around and find Firebird today, to try to remember if it’s true love. And then I will be able to save some monies for something else!
