Off Melrose

ColourPop Off Melrose 12-Pan Pressed Powder Shadow Palette ($18.00 for 0.36 oz.) is a new, limited edition neutral palette that read slightly more muted, less warm-toned than a lot of the brand’s neutral palette releases.

The palette contained three mattes, two sparkle mattes, six shimmers, and one pressed glitter. Overall, the shades were pigmented, blendable, and easy enough to use, though some of the mattes were on the more powdery side and the glitter had more migration/travel over time than other shades I’ve tried in that formula.

Angeleno

Angeleno is a very light gold with warmer, peach undertones and a smooth, metallic sheen. It had rich color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out nicely. The texture was lightly creamy, not too firmly-pressed into the pan but also wasn’t too softly-pressed, so it wasn’t messy to work with. It lasted well for eight hours before fading visibly.

FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent).

Formula Overview

$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours.

The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Boutique

Boutique is a light, taupe-brown with warmer undertones and more olive overtones paired with a sparkle-matte finish. Those sparkles didn’t seem to translate to my lid, so fallout wasn’t too much of an issue as a result. The texture was soft, somewhat powdery in the pan but blendable and easy to diffuse along the edges. It had opaque pigmentation that wore well for eight hours before fading a bit.

Brunch

Brunch is a brighter, peachy orange with strong, warm undertones and a frosted finish. The eyeshadow had opaque color coverage in a single layer, which adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out well. The consistency felt lightly creamy, more loosely-pressed but not powdery or prone to fallout. It lasted well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Fairfax

Fairfax has a warmer, rosy-plum base with a duochrome shimmer that shifted from bluish-violet to teal paired with a metallic finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff that applied evenly to my lid and diffused easily along the edges. The texture was smooth to the touch, moderately dense, and almost emollient. The color showed signs of wear after eight hours.

Social Club

Social Club has a translucent base chocked full of darker gold and bronze glitter. It included plastic (PET) glitter and was not intended for use on the immediate eye area. The texture was slightly drier and not as emollient as I expected, so it did not disperse the glitter particles as evenly and the longevity wasn’t as great. It had semi-sheer to medium coverage from all the glitter particles, and there was noticeable migration after seven hours of wear.

$10 Latte

$10 Latte is a muted, medium brown with subtle, warm undertones–almost olive-toned–with flecks of gold micro-sparkle over a matte finish. The consistency was somewhat powdery, which made it prone to fallout, but the inclusion of sparkles made that fallout a guarantee. It had mostly opaque, buildable pigmentation that stayed on well for eight hours otherwise.

With the exception of On the List and Social Club, I really like these colours. I honestly don’t understand why Colourpop doesn’t listen to its customers (if comments here are any reflection of feelings overall) and stop with the pressed pigment with PET. I’m reasonably certain that many (most) customers would be quite happy if these shadows weren’t included in pretty much EVERY palette they release.

My thought on CP and PET is that, even if you don’t count the 1 or 2 glitter shades that are usually found in a CP palette, the value is still there. Very rarely that people would use every single shade in a palette to begin with, a shade or two of “unwanted” shade does not stop people from buying a palette in most cases. Especially at CP price point, it is definitely still not a deal breaker to most.

On top of that, there are definitely enough people who likes the glitters/don’t mind them, but complains and concerns are always louder.

I personally like them, as it gives you extra option to create extra looks. Clearly, they are still doing it probably because they have not seen it affecting the sales in a negative way.

This has turned out to be a much better palette than I thought it would. Needless to say, it was marred by the inclusion of PET glitter and the pink shades, which the brand includes in every single palette (virtually) whether if fits in with the overall colour story or not.
My favourite shade was La Brea (and I do have dupes) for it. The shade I most disliked was Down to Urth – that deep, muddfy shade could have been a delightful olive brown soft shimmer.

I bought Colourpop’s Going Coconuts fairly recently (since it was at Ulta) and I’m happy with it as a neutral palette. I’m not seeing anything here that inspires me to get this palette, even though I like the LA theme and the color story.
