ColourPop California Love Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
California Love
ColourPop California Love 12-Pan Pressed Powder Shadow Palette ($16.00 for 0.36 oz.) is a new, warm-toned neutral palette featuring a mix of mattes, shimmers, and glittery shades across an assortment of hues ranging from mid-tone peach to mid-tone taupe. Diego felt too emollient, which made it harder to apply it evenly without using it with a wet brush, while Surfrider was overly firm, so it was stiffer and took more effort to use it.

Diego
Diego is a light, golden copper with a sparkling, metallic finish. It had more medium, buildable pigmentation, which seemed to be owed in part to the more emollient, silicone-heavy feel of the eyeshadow itself. It was harder to apply it evenly, and I felt like using a flat, synthetic brush was best (fingertip actually seemed to move it around too much). It wore well eight hours on me and had slight fallout over time.

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours.
The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Sequoia
Sequoia is a bright pop of tangerine orange with strong, warm yellow undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff that was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. The consistency was soft, a little powdery in the pan, but it applied evenly and wasn’t prone to sheering out too readily. This shade lasted well for eight hours on my skin before showing signs of fading.

El Capitan
El Capitan is a mix of various depths of gold micro-glitter. The glitter was finer than in most of the Pressed Glitters I’ve tried thus far, though it is still glitter and as a result, it is listed as “not intended for use in the immediate eye area.” The texture had slip to it, and the product adhered well to bare skin with minimal fallout both during application and later on during wear–there was just a touch of migration/fallout after eight hours of wear.

Surfrider
Surfrider is a light-medium, orange-brown base with flecks of gold sparkle on top. The texture was firmer, stiffer in the pan, and it felt thinner as I applied it, which made it harder to pick up with a brush and then diffuse onto my skin. It had good pigmentation, but it was the texture that made it harder to work with. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before fading, but there was light fallout over time.

Mission
Mission is a medium-dark taupe with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was opaque in one pass, though the texture was a bit firmer and stiffer compared to other shades in the palette. I didn’t have too much trouble picking it up as a heavier handed approach did the trick, and I didn’t have any issues with blending out the edges on my lid. It wore well eight hours before fading noticeably on my skin.

I am a bit disappointed in this palette, not only did Colour Pop completely ruin the beautiful gold shade (whatever happened to the lovely Snakebite formula?), but they also missed an opportunity to show that their state is not just about sun, sand and desert…..some beautiful blue shimmers could have represented the sea, stunning greens and dark browns for the trees…..a really vibrant palette that would have appealed to a wider cross section of beauty lovers.
I agree, this looks like half the Colourpop palettes already released. Also, you are right. If this limited shade range is all they could come up with for a state as diverse as California I wonder what “Arizona” would look like? 😉
You’ve both put into words exactly what I thought when I saw this palette. It’s pretty, but I feel like they missed so much they could’ve represented of our state in this one!
Colourpop just put out a bronze with blue and teal palette as part of their Mar/Sol collection.
Like the orange toned mattes. If they were in a foursome, yeah.
The look you got from this makes me think it’s a gem when it comes to being a warmer neutral palette! Should I or shouldn’t I, that is the question? Along with the conundrum of PMG vs CP! Yeah, I’m still debating within myself, lol. ?
I’m quite excited. I ordered it last week. Thank you for your expertise!!!
No, ColourPop, no! Don’t turn into Tarte’s warmer-toned cousin! This palette is almost indistinguishable from so many they’ve released the last however many months… like it’s a neural network idea of a CP palette. “Here, I fed this awesome computer ColourPop’s 40 latest palettes and heeere’s what it came up with!”
It’s a pretty, solid warm neutral collection. I don’t need it, and it seems more of the same from ColourPop.d
Thank you so much for doing this review – it’s so detailed and incredibly helpful! I’m just a little bit confused about their statement ‘not intended for use in the immediate eye area’… Would you possibly know why the product isn’t suitable, and if we’re not supposed to put in our eye area, how are we supposed to use it??
It uses ingredients that are not approved for usage on the eye by the FDA.
Live this color scheme but there’s way to much bismuth oxychloride in their shadows to bother purchasing a palette. It’s too bad…
