Baroque

ColourPop Baroque 9-Pan Pressed Powder Palette ($14.00 for 0.36 oz.) is a new, probably limited edition (or life, where they’ll restock it a few times but it’ll randomly disappear!) bluish-gray color story. The actual end result on the eye seemed a little more peacock-like with the two shimmery shades that had warmer, plummy bases and duochrome shifts.

I’m so pleased to say that the quality of this palette is more in line with what I’d expect from the brand–pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing eyeshadows. There were three mattes that had some sparkle over them, but the base eyeshadows were great, so it was mostly confined to fallout during the initial application.

Bougie

Bougie is a very light gray with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had opaque color coverage that applied well to bare skin without sheering out too readily, which can be an issue with lighter matte hues like this. The texture was smooth, velvety, and more substantial but still blendable. It stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading visibly.

FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent).

Formula Overview

$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours.

The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Ritzy

Ritzy has a medium, rosy copper base with blue-to-green shifting shimmer that gave it a lightly, metallic finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied well to my lid with an even laydown of color and no fallout. The consistency was lightly emollient, smooth, and blendable. The eyeshadow lasted well for eight hours before showing signs of fading.

Bebe is a medium gray with cooler undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color payoff in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out nicely without losing its intensity. The texture felt lightly powdery in the pan but was smooth, velvety, and more substantial, which helped it have better adhesion on bare skin. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Secret

Secret is a faded, bluish-gray with cool undertones and flecks of lighter blue sparkle over a matte finish. A lot of the sparkles got lost during application, with some visible as fallout and other bits just gone, but there were some stray sparkles that made it to the eye area. It had opaque color coverage that applied evenly and blended out well, aside from the sparkles. The consistency was somewhat powdery but didn’t seem prone to sheering out. It stayed on well for eight hours before showing signs of fading.

Noble

Noble has a warmer, coppery-plum base with blue-to-violet shifting pearl that gave it a soft, metallic finish. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that wasn’t overly emollient nor too thick, so it picked up well with a dry brush and had good adhesion to bare skin. It lasted nicely for eight hours before fading visibly.

Etiquette

Etiquette is a medium gray with neutral-to-warm undertones and a sparkling, matte finish. There were fine sparkles throughout the formula, though they didn’t translate much to the eye. The texture was soft, lightly powdery with some fallout during application, but blendable, which yielded mostly opaque color payoff in one layer. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Grand

Grand is a soft, cool-toned black with faint sparkle over a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which applied evenly and blended out with ease, though there was light fallout from the sparkles, which didn’t bind that well with the base color. For more noticeable sparkle on the lid, one would need to apply with a fingertip. This shade showed signs of fading after eight hours of fading and had light fallout over time.

If I were younger, I’d be all over this. Being a gray nerd, I do have dupes, but each is on a different continent. It’s nice to have them all together. But I WILL wait to see if SG does gray mystery bags again, maybe EL. EL says sold out, but why keep the palette up on SG’s site, if it’s permanent-gone? When No Joke went, it went. Hope springs eternal.

Shannon Avatar

I was hoping this would pull a little more blue, but using the palette comparison tool it’s not quite as similar to Blowin’ Smoke as I thought it might be. Glad to see a return to better quality at least, should be a nice addition to the collection!

Helene Avatar

I do wish they had skipped the warm shades in this palette and instead had a silvery and another grey shimmery maybe a lighter colour. I would have loved an almost total grey palette, I don’t mind the burgundy, it would add a bit of excitement, I think. I absolutely get that a lot of others like the warm colours in the palette, it’s just me, wanting a completely (almost) grey palette.
Done complaining, I might actually get this palette and use it with some singles or other palettes. So this is a maybe.
I do love the look you did, Christine, but then you always do great looks. Do you ever just look at the finished eye and say “No”, wash it off and start again?

Tapnfeet99 Avatar

Glad I picked this up! I’m such a sucker for CP eyeshadow. Still waiting for the rerelease of Hocus Pocus (was on right at 10am and had the stuff in my cart but by the time my place in “line” to checkout was ready, everything was sold out.

Jane Avatar

Appeals to me A LOT! But, but, bust dark and I’m trying so hard to lighten my game up with age. Good thing I have to pay too much for shipping for ColourPop, but should I visit the States and time in the next year….hmmmm.

Val Avatar

I ordered this at 12:05AM yesterday from Ulta when the items appeared on their site. I typically wait for Christine’s review before deciding, but this palette appeals to my goth heart so much. I passed on Smoke Show because it didn’t grab my eye like this one did. Just a bit of variety being enough to bring the color story out of monochrome. I’m older now so the razor edge goth look of my 20s doesn’t wear as well.

As to pans used, there is always at least one shade that I don’t use or doesn’t appeal to me or match my skin tone, etc. I have a few with the unsafe glitter, which I have never used and detest on principle. I removed those pans and added ones from other CP palettes that I don’t reach for as much, but did like those specific shades. I also got one regifted to me from a friend (I had gifted it to her a few months before, ha!), and I did the same to that one.

This probably won’t work if you prefer to keep the palettes in their original arrangements. But if you do decide to redistribute pans among other palettes you like more, you could still keep the packaging. Think of it as an empty palette ready to be customized, say for travel. =)

Elizabeth Avatar

PSA – this has 4 dupes in Blowin Smoke. But guess who just bought this, despite having bought Blowin Smoke recently? *sheepish laugh* I figure it’s cheap after the coupon, so much so that it’s still a bargain for 4 new shades. I like that I can just grab one to take with m, and cool neutrals & smoky are what I usually wear now…I wanted the Fame palette by Colourpop but it was out of stock forever, and I actually like Baroque a lot better. It’s a lot more dramatic than Fame.

I picked this up at Ulta. I found most of the shades looked muddied on me and had a goth vibe to it. Bougie is the only one I can use as a base, the rest make my eye look more sunken, which is hard to undo since I have such hooded eyes as it is!

I did find a silver lining, I can use many of them wet with an angled brush as an eyeliner, but I should have picked a different palette. Not happy with this one.
