Coloured Raine Smoke Show Mini Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Smoke Show
Coloured Raine Smoke Show Mini Eyeshadow Palette ($36.00 for 0.32 oz.) contains four warm-toned neutrals, a deep green, and a shimmering black. Five of the six shades are mattes, while the one shimmer was extremely difficult to pair with the mattes as it was much thicker, stiffer, and drier (despite feeling more like a cream in the pan). Everything seemed to be coming together decently until I added Smoke Screen to the outer lid, and it was a disaster–and it would not blend or diffuse out. I was so disappointed that it wasn’t better–I expected so much more based on the Coloured Raine single eyeshadows I’ve tried as well as their Queen of Hearts palette (which was one of the best palettes released in ’16).

Cloudy
Cloudy is a light-medium peach with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, moderately powdery texture, so I’d advise tapping away excess and possibly applying this before any deeper shades, as there was fallout (even when I tried to minimize it). It wore well for seven hours on me.

Formula Overview

2022 Formula: The formula is supposed to be "highly pigmented" and "blendable" with a "butterly smooth" feel. The majority of the matte eyeshadows were quite pigmented, while some of the shimmers were overly emollient, which resulted in sheerer and/or uneven coverage.
The matte eyeshadows have a bit of dryness to them, though they were pigmented and fairly blendable, but they tended to apply best over an eyeshadow primer, which ensured a better base for them to adhere to. The shimmer eyeshadows were best applied with fingertips or a flat, firm (and sometimes dampened) brush and pressed/patted into place, then lightly blended.
I did not love the two finishes paired together as the matte finish was thinner and more powdery compared to the thicker, denser shimmers, so the shimmers often "erased" the matte eyeshadows when blended out.
The formula was different than the brand's original single pan formula that they originally debuted with, and I preferred their original formula overall, though the new one is decent, just not as foolproof to work with.
Original formula review: The formula is supposed to be "highly pigmented, long-lasting, and blendable" and come in a variety of finishes. Most their eyeshadows are semi-opaque to opaque with a smooth, blendable textures that are easy to use and apply well to bare skin. The shimmers are slightly dense and creamier to the touch compared to the mattes, which aren't thin but don't have the same amount of slip. They tend to wear between eight and nine hours on me.

Naked Eye
Naked Eye is a light-medium, yellowed peach with warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was quite dusty and was harder to apply to bare skin; it needed a primer for decent adhesion (otherwise, there was just so much that ended up below the lid). It had good pigmentation that stayed on well for seven hours.

Smoke Screen
Smoke Screen is a deep black with neutral-to-warm undertones and flecks of larger micro-glitter. It was extremely dense and felt more like a cream by touch, but it was difficult to blend out without the edges looking ragged and dry. When I tried to blend and move the product on my lid, it had a tendency to skip, and it seemed to get stiffer when pulled over any of the mattes (almost as if whatever slip was left was eradicated by the powderiness of the matte formula in the palette). It started to crease on me after seven hours of wear.

Torch
Torch is a medium-dark brown with subtle, warm red undertones and a matte finish. The texture was grainy and powdery, which resulted in a thinner feel that applied unevenly to the lid. It took a lot of blending and diffusing with the lighter shades in the palette to correct the unevenness. It lasted for seven hours on me.

Showtime
Showtime is a muted, dark green with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was soft, slightly dry to the touch, but it was fairly blendable on the lid. It was not the easiest matte I have worked with, but it was not the stiffest either. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

This palette reminded me of the old Urban Decay one – Smoked. Wow the swatches are terrible! Glad I skipped – thanks!
With my makeup skills, this palette looks like a recipe for mud!!
And it seems pretty expensive. For only $6 more, I’d much rather have the ABH Subculture palette to get these types of shades.
Weird that there’s just one shimmer thrown in there, and that it’s the black to boot. I really like these colors but I can dupe them all even within my singles.
This reminds me a bit of the Smasbox Smoky Covershot palette, except that is a really good one…similar vibes but the quality of the one above is pretty dismal.
Wow, that is just awful!
Aw. I had more hope for this one! Nice colors, but the swatches are meh!
What a huge letdown this palette worked out to be. I really loved the color combo, too. Could’ve made for an earthy 90’s grunge eye look like I used to do on the regular back then.
Oy that black!
Another palette disaster! These swatches and ratings are substantially below average and even though I love my greens, I don’t like this one.
I had my finger on the trigger for a couple of these CR minis. I thought it would be a good way to try the brand (reviewed to raves by Christine). I had no idea Temptalia would review these, and I’m super glad I’m insanely busy at work. Didn’t have a chance to order, and now I saved myself the disappointment. These are a train wreck.
Not sure if it would rate the same, but I swatched and tried the Huda mini in Sephora last week. Again, the full size seems to stand up. The mini was just awful, IMO (at least the one I tried).
Aww wow how dismal!! I’m glad I waited on these palettes! Hopefully Coloured Raine takes these reviews to heart and gives us more Queen of Hearts quality!
Like you, Christine, I am insanely disappointed in these mini palettes. I have several individual CR shades and The Queen of Hearts palette and love them all. I have rarely seen so many truly beautiful shadows together in one palette as those in Q of H. I am so thankful I have placed myself on a low buy for the holidays or I would have picked these up in a heartbeat. Beyond disappointed.
Wow. I’m quite surprised at the experience you’ve had. Again this one was my second favorite. It blends effortlessly for me. Showtime being my absolute favorite. It almost applies looking wet. I adore these minis from Coloured Raine. Sorry you’ve had a negative experience v
