Chanel Olga (422) Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Olga (422) Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.10 oz.) has been reinvented with a “renovated formula and vibrant colour spectrum.” Each shade is “inspired by Coco Chanel and her closest friends.” The formula is touted as “ultra hydrating,” “rich,” “bright,” and “luminous.” The texture is lightweight with moderate slip so it glides on without tugging. These were comfortable to wear, but they weren’t “ultra hydrating” to me, and the color payoff didn’t see vibrant, rich, or bright.

Chanel Olga (422) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “bright pink.” It’s a muted, light-medium pink with subtle warm undertones and barely-there golden shimmer. (Bright pink it is definitely not.) It’s semi-sheer with a luminous sheen. The formula was neither hydrating nor drying, and it lasted for an hour and a half on me. Guerlain Rosy Silk (LE, $37.00) is less glossy. Tom Ford Beauty Ian (LE, $32.00) is cooler-toned. Chanel Intime (93) (P, $35.00) is lighter. Estee Lauder Impulsive (P, $30.00) is warmer, less shimmery. YSL Corail Jalouse (32) (P, $34.00) is brighter, less shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Summer Fling (04) (LE, $49.00) is warmer. Too Faced Taffy (P, $22.00) is less shimmery. Revlon Pink Lemonade (P, $7.49) is slightly less shimmery. MAC Giddy (P, $16.00) is brighter. Guerlain Gabrielle (P, $51.00) is lighter. Chanel Jersey Rose (P, $34.00) is darker, warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Cecile (432) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “soft rosewood.” It’s a muted, medium rosy pink with warm undertones and a soft, frosted shimmer-sheen finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a creamy, lightweight texture that went on evenly. It lasted for three and a half hours on me and was lightly hydrating. Tarte Rare (LE) is brighter, warmer. Givenchy Nude Guipure (106) (P, $36.00) is less shimmery. Estee Lauder Dynamic (P, $30.00) is warmer, darker, less shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Summer Fling (04) (LE, $49.00) is lighter. MAC Morning Rose (LE, $16.00) is darker. Chanel Equivoque (126) (LE, $34.00) is darker. NYX Blush (P, $4.00) is less shimmery. Guerlain Rose Desir (LE, $51.00) is cooler-toned. Guerlain Gabrielle (P, $51.00) is lighter. Guerlain Romance (LE, $35.00) is more shimmery. Chanel Jersey Rose (P, $34.00) is lighter. Chanel Gardenia (P, $34.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Suzanne (438) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as am “intense rosewood.” It’s a softened, medium-dark rosy plum with warm undertones and a soft, shimmery sheen. It was less luminous compared to the other two shades, but it had the most color payoff–mostly opaque but with some translucency, so the natural lip color will still come through. It wore well for four hours and was lightly hydrating. MAC Marque (P, $23.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Guerlain Air Kiss (304) (P, $37.00) is darker. Buxom Dolly (LE, $21.00) is lighter. MAC Mystical (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Estee Lauder Irresistible (P, $30.00) is lighter, less shimmery, more muted. MAC Out for Passion (LE, $20.00) is warmer. MAC Morning Rose (LE, $16.00) is lighter more shimmery. Chanel Ce Soir (P, $34.00) is less shimmery. MAC Glamourdaze (LE, $16.00) is darker. Guerlain Gracia (P, $51.00) is slightly warmer. Buxom Hooligan (P, $21.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Interesting; I saw these at my local counter but wanted to wait and see what your thoughts were…are these the only ones you got from the relaunch or are there more reviews on the way?

Olga Avatar

ugghhhhh i was so excited to see a lipstick sharing my name and then my hopes were dashed 🙁 nothing, i mean nothing in Canada, ever has the name Olga on a product. Gosh darnit Chanel.

El Avatar

I was excited about that, too, as I have a family member named Olga!

Might try it at the counter, see what I think, still. I’m not fussed about the lack of longevity – just means it wears like a gloss, really. And I’m always reapplying everything anyway because I always have a cup of tea or coffee at hand.

Not impressed with the first 2 colors. They are so sheer that they both look almost the same on the lips, and for $36, I expect more. The 3rd one (Suzanne) is a kind of shade that I really like, I’ve been eyeing the dupe Guerlain Air Kiss for so long….I was trying to grab it during the Sephora sale, but it was sold out

I love Suzanne. I think it looks like a lighter/sheerer version of the new Bite Butter Cream lipstick in Rosewood. I like Suzanne better than Rosewood but not sure if I can justify the price difference. Which one did you find more comfortable to wear?

Denise Avatar

There are a lot of things I like about Chanel but sadly I’ve always found their lip products, how shall I say, wanting.
Maybe its my lips but their lipsticks only seem to last an hour, if that, before disappearing or settling into my lines and thats without eating or drinking (plus, I’m not a lip licker either).
Olga looks so pretty on the bullett but makes barely any impact on your lips. Pity….

Anne Avatar

I’m pretty pissed they reformulated the line, because I really liked it. I swatched a bunch of the new Rouge Cocos a few days ago, and I wasn’t impressed – too sheer, too translucent (I’m sure some will love them, but it’s not what I’m personally looking for when I turn to Rouge Coco lipsticks). I don’t get the point, since we already have the Rouge Coco shines. Bleh.
Of the three you reviewed, Christine, I like Suzanne the best.

Christine Avatar

I’m so sorry to hear that! 🙁 I hope you get the chance to try them on to see if they are better applied. I think that some definitely appear more pigmented actually applied than swatched, though not twice more pigmented! I do agree that if these veer rather sheer, then it seems too similar to Rouge Coco Shine.

Sylirael Avatar

Interesting… so when they say the formula has been revamped… how do these compare to previous ones for you, Christine? I ask because my Rouge Coco Charme (#40) is one of my favourite lipsticks of all time, and unfailingly makes my lips feel better after it wears off than they did before I put it on! I totally get that this might be just a personal bonus/quirk of mine, but if they’ve changed the formula… >_<

On the colour note: I totally want all three of these, but especially the latter two. <3_<3 The first one is a bit random based on the description, but you had me at 'pink with golden shimmer' 😉 I hope they're still making Charme!!

Hm… I liked the old Rouge Coco formula just fine and there were a lot of good colours that I am going to miss now that they’re switching over. I wish that they’d gone the way of Guerlain with the Rouge G’s and just did a launch with a handful of new shades rather than changing everything around.

hi christine!! i received a very nice deluxe sample of 5 or 6 shades from this new collection. i did not like any of them. i found them to be extremely creamy upon application compared to the older formula. with all of the colors ranging from nude to bright to reds, i’d definitely would need a lipliner. i never used a lipliner with the old formula. i also did not find these very hydrating or long lasting. my local chanel counter said the older formula are gone from the counter. but, i know they’re still available on chanel’s website. i ordered a few shades that i absolutely loved. once again, i’m not happy with chanel. i’m thinking the next big thing to come out is their summer collection in late march or april. i’ll save my $$$ for that. i’m learning though that if i find a product from chanel that i love, buy backups because they do sell out so quickly for the most part.

wendy Avatar

dear christine all the colors came on a card. norstrom shipped the samples with my order. i think there was adrienne, coco, arthur, and 2 more. i thought they were just blah! after reading your last review on the burberry shadows, i ordered all 4. nordstrom confirmed that the nude shade will be shipped in a few weeks. when i see an a+ rating from you, it’s like omg hurry and order it!

Oooh, bonjour Suzanne!! <3

It seems like every time I find the resolve not to purchase anymore lipstick, I end up finding a new one to shatter it to pieces. Suzanne’s quite fetching but the other two…wow, they look great via the bullet but swatched, I frowned. I guess I was expecting more (shoot, it’s Chanel after all!) Ah, well. My 2015 birthday list and wish list is growing. 🙂

*sighs* What’s sadder is the fact that I already have well over a hundred lipsticks and still want more. I can be so piggish (both stubborn and gluttonous) when it comes to lipstick. What the list expand over the next few months, especially if MAC finally comes out with a shade I want. They’ve been disappointing me for months with all those red lipsticks. LOL!

Whitney Avatar

I wish I could get into highlighters along with blushes but I’m both confused on how to apply them (tutorials don’t work for me) and afraid to sport them. I’m such a coward. 🙁

And righty-o on most of it being permanent items, especially since my persnickety self loves to get attached to limited edition items (knowing that they’ll probably never re-release them again).

Melissa29 Avatar

I love the Suzanne shade. The lipsticks are hydrating on the lips. I purchased Marie (430) and it broke. I guess I was heavy handed when I applied it but luckily I went back to Nordstrom’s and exchanged it for a new tube.

Denise Avatar

I love Suzanne on you! I think I’m holding off on these for now, though…I’m very intrigued by those Bite Butter Cream lipsticks you recently reviewed, especially your top picks, Rosewood and Hazelnut! Thank you Christine, as always, for great pictures, swatches, and reviews!
