Chanel Éclat-Énigmatique Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches
Éclat Énigmatique
Chanel Éclat-Énigmatique Les 4 Ombres Multi-Effect Quadra Eyeshadow ($61.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a new, limited edition set of shades for summer. I find that the quad feels more like the gel-powder hybrid type of powder that is often used wet/dry, though the quad is definitely usable with dry brushes for plenty of color payoff (the look was done without using any damp brushes). All four shades were semi-opaque to opaque, soft and blendable, and long-wearing (eight hours). The interplay between the gold, brown, and red reminded me of Candeur et Experience, which had a similar effect when applied but in all matte textures–as this palette is all shimmers, I could see it pairing well with the Candeur et Experience quad.

Éclat Énigmatique
LELimited Edition. $70.00.
Éclat Énigmatique #1
Éclat-Énigmatique #1 is a soft gold with warm, yellow undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good pigmentation applied both dry and wet, though it was more metallic when applied with a dampened brush. The texture was soft, dense but not stiff or dry, and blendable on the lid. It wore well for eight hours on me.

LELimited Edition.
Éclat Énigmatique #2
Éclat-Énigmatique #2 is a blackened green with subtle, warm olive undertones and a fine, pearly shimmer-sheen finish. It tended to look almost gray when initially applied, but the more I blended and diffused the edges, the warmer and more olive/brown it appeared (rather than green). The eyeshadow had opaque coverage in a single layer, but using it with a wet brush did deepen and intensify the color overall. The texture was smooth, moderately dense but still blendable and easy to pick up with a brush. It lasted nicely for eight hours before fading slightly.

LELimited Edition.
Éclat Énigmatique #3
Éclat-Énigmatique #3 is a medium brown with warm udnertones and a pearly sheen. The pigmentation was opaque both wet and dry, though the damp application yielded slightly darker color. The consistency was smooth to the touch, soft and yielding without being powdery or dusty in the pan. It applied evenly to bare skin and didn’t start to show signs of fading until after eight hours of wear.

Éclat Énigmatique #4
Éclat-Énigmatique #4 is a rich, coppery red with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The color payoff was opaque regardless of using it dry or damp, but the wet brush did intensify and deepen the shade overall. The texture was smooth, denser but not firm or dry, and easy to work with as my brush picked up color well, applied it evenly, and blended it out with little effort. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours on me.

This is too rich for my blood. Gorgeous palette, but definitely a skip for me. Although, I do want it just to touch it. The shadows look like they are so soft.
What a beautiful quad! I love that green.
Beautiful ES palette, although I would use these colours during the fall season, as they are too dark for my taste to be used in summer (with the exception of #1).
Christine, will you be reviewing other items from Chanel’s Cruise Summer 2018 Collection? This collection is not yet available in Canada, unfortunately.
I already reviewed everything I bought from that collection, sorry!
Thank you Christine!
I love this. I can see it more for fall for me, but anyway — very pretty. I do not need any more eyeshadows though, and at this price it’s an indulgence. We’ll see if I’m swayed when I see it in-store.
OoooOoo…this reminds me of the Chanel Empreinte du Desert, which is one of my absolute favorite quads of all time. …I might need this.
Ugh. That green is so gorgeous, but cannot justify the other colors, especially because the red is completely unwearable for me (it does look stunning on you!). Wish Chanel would do another round of the sold out Empreinte Du Desert or something similar!
I can’t stop looking at this stunning quad *sigh*
Oooo!!! I could so see this quad working very nicely with my dearly treasured Empriente du Desert quad! The interchangeability of the shades in both and that they complement one another is tempting me here.
(Okay Nancy, cool your gears down, Gurl, you still have that Aaliyah collex coming at you next month! ?)
That red is the deal breaker for me. I love the other 3 shades but the red (and the fact that there is no longer a Chanel counter near where I live) puts the kibosh on it. I can probably dupe the other 3 shades quite easily from my stash.
Hey, did something change with the Dupe List or have I inadvertently hit some button to give myself a different view? It looks quite different and includes things like “dust off”.
Oh, I see Dust Off is actually the name of one the dupes! I thought it was referring to a quality of the the shadow. See, I don’t do at all well with change!
The Dupe List results page has been updated to reflect a better user experience for refining results as well as to provide a better viewing experience for smaller screens (the trend is toward smaller screens, not wider displays), particularly due to completely changing the structure and how menus/filters display on mobile! 🙂
Hi Mariella,
Agreed on the red. Ugh. For me, the conjunctivitis, pink-eye look has never, and will never, be attractive in any way.
Not kidding — I have more than once done a double take on a woman with too much red/pink/orange eyes thinking it was an infection or something was wrong. Very pale pink can be a lovely neutral. Very pink/red tones are the colors of disease and swelling in the eye area. Count me out. I just don’t get it. 🙂
Linda, I too feel that I look as though I have an eye infection if I wear those red or orange toned shadows. Talk about irony, though (or annoyance). I woke up this morning with a broken blood vessel in my eye (nothing serious, though) so it’s REALLY a time when red on my eye would be doubly BAAAD.
I agree this would work well with Candeur et Experience, which I wore almost daily last winter and the winter before that. I used the shimmers from Theory Minx to brighten it up. I wish Chanel were CF.
I think this is stunning. I love Empriente du Desert and I think this would compliment it amazingly. I also really love Chanel shadows. Like Dior, I just have good luck with the formula and these shades are really lovely. I know many can’t wear the red shade and I might be one of them but I will give it a whirl with a dark brown pencil to separate the shadow from my conjunctiva so I am hoping that will keep me from looking Inflamed. In any event, I will find a way to make it work, lol.
stunning look christine! arg, i love that green but quads get about as much as use singles in my stash; possible even less.
i wonder if layering the bronze or gold on top of the red would tame it down enough for those that can’t use it straight up?
It would certainly make it appear either more faded/darker with bronze or warmer and lighter/coppery with the gold.
That quad is divine, except for the red shade – all the others are so wearable for me. However I do have enough olive shades already.
Beautiful eye look Christine.
Hi. The Bay (Canada) seems to not sell Chanel online anymore. It is still available in select stores but I coukd not find it on the website. 🙁
Sorry this is so late. It is on the website for sure. Hover over Beauty and on the lower right you will see Chanel, MAC etc.
Is this red the same as Ombre Premiere “Desert Rouge”? Not that I need this because I already own many red eyeshadows, but still want this so badly, I love red, and Candeur et Experience is my favourite ever, and I use it with Desert Rouge.

Thanks! It looks very similar. I love those reds!
Beautiful quad! The first light eyeshadow reminds me an old Chanel ombre unique shadowlights in the color Eclat. I think the red will not be strong on the eyes, considering the darkness of the area, blending and mascara.
I let out an audible gasp of delight at the sight of your gorgeous eye look, Christine. I’ve been waiting for this to be released and it does not disappoint! To know that it pairs well with Candeur et Experience makes me swoon. I:will happily buy every iteration of red shadow that Chanel puts out. ??
Man, I want this so bad. I swatched in store and I found the shadows so buttery and pigmented, they remind me of Empreinte du désert. Together with the matte Candeur et Expérience quad these would form a beautiful trio in my collection. I’ll wait a while though… Getting beautiful second hand makeup has become a bit of a sport for me.
Oooh I’m feeling some kinda way about this quad… I was too late to the party for the Desert quad. May need this..
This palette is so gorgeous I bought it right away as I knew I would have to have it. I love their Candeur et Experience palette and the Empriente du Desert palette. I am so happy with this purchase and loved most of the things from this collection. I am happy to see you have it an A for me it’s a A+. Thanks for reviewing have been missing Chanel reviews.
Anyone know when this will be in stores in the US?
I absolutely love this eyeshadow palette. The quality of the shadows are excellent. The coppery red is beautiful….I tone it down a bit with number #3. My eye color is medium brown eyes with gold and copper flecks, so this palette is perfect for me. I will say this, red is beautiful when worked with warm browns and golds. I always get complements on my eye color whenever I wear coppery colored eyeshadows. Christina, you did a beautiful job with this palette. Your eyes look fantastic.
