Flex Appeal

MAC Flex Appeal Crystal Glaze Gloss ($22.00 for 0.41 oz.) is a muted, berry-tinted translucent base with barely-there pearl. It gave my lips a slightly darker, pinker look but did not add a lot of color or coverage. It had sheer coverage, which wasn’t buildable, that lasted for two hours. The consistency was smooth, jelly-like, and comfortable to wear. The formula was hydrating over time.

The Crystal Glaze Gloss formula is supposed to be an “ultra-moisturizing gloss” that has “an intense, glossy shine.” The texture was soft, smooth, and almost jelly-like–but denser and not quite as slippery. It felt balm-like on the lips and had no tackiness at all (completely unlike most of their gloss formulas) and had a very light vanilla scent. MAC recently released this formula in their Makeup Art Cosmetics collection, and it’s part of the upcoming Work It Out launch that debuts on Thursday.

However, only one of the six new, limited shades for Work It Out is described as sheer, and the formula runs sheer, which is where it falls the shortest. This formula is best for someone who likes tinted gloss that’s hydrating and non-sticky but not someone who wants noticeable coverage. I’ll definitely check back on the official description (to see if it changes) when these officially launch, though.

Train Bleu

NARS Train Bleu Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($27.00 for 0.08 oz.) is deep, purpled berry with cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage that went on fairly evenly and smoothly. The consistency was velvety, smooth without being emollient, and glided on easily. The lip color could have sat a bit better on lips, but it lasted for six hours and was just a touch drying overall.

The formula is supposed to be “long-lasting” with “rich” and “seamless color.” The texture has a more velvety feel: smooth, thinner but glides on easily, and doesn’t have a lot of wetness/creaminess. The pigmentation varied from shade to shade with most shades having semi-opaque coverage. They were easy to apply along the lips and comfortable to apply, as they did not tug. The formula lasted anywhere from three hours to six hours, and some shades were somewhat drying and others were non-drying.

NARS Damned Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($27.00 for 0.08 oz.) is a rich berry with cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied an even, smooth layer of color that sat well on the lips. Despite having a more matte finish, it did not look dry or powdery on my lips. The consistency felt velvety as it glided across the lips, and it was a lightweight formula that was comfortable to wear and non-drying over the six hours it lasted. There was a slight stain left behind after I removed this shade.

Makeup Geek Groupie Foiled Lip Gloss ($15.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium-dark pinky-red with bright, fuchsia pearl. It had medium, buildable coverage that was mostly opaque after two layers. The consistency was thicker but not heavy, so a second layer was still comfortable and did not get goopy. The color went on beautifully with smooth, even coverage that lasted for six hours.

The Foiled Lip Gloss formula is supposed to wear for “six hours” with buildable coverage (“single swipe for … translucent pop of color” or “multiple layers for … opaque color”). The texture was thicker but not goopy or heavy with a moderate tackiness. They lasted from five to seven hours on me, and they were comfortable to wear and were just barely hydrating overall. The pigmentation ranged from medium to semi-opaque in one pass, and then the glosses were buildable to mostly opaque to opaque.

Estee Lauder Prowl Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is dark pink with warm undertones and a cream finish. The pigmentation was mostly opaque, though it was buildable to full coverage with some layering. The texture was lightweight, adhered well to the lips but didn’t feel clingy (but it didn’t slide around either, so it wasn’t high-maintenance), and felt moisturizing while I wore it. On me, the color stayed on well for six and a half hours.

The Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick formula is supposed to have “high-intensity color” that hydrate lips with six-hour wear. It’s one of my favorite formulas, as the majority of the shades are creamy, smooth, pigmented, hydrating, and long-wearing (four to seven hours). They are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

Bite Beauty #014 The Lip Pencil ($18.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a brighter, medium-dark plum with cooler undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that covered the lips with even color. The consistency was slightly soft, firm without being painful, and was forgiving enough that I was able to fill in most of my lips. It wore well for five and a half hours, and it was a touch drying toward the end. Bite Beauty recommends wearing this particular shade with Sake; I think it would work well with
Gin Fizz (brighter, lighter, cooler), Dragonfruit (brighter, deeper), Eggplant (darker), or Mauvember (darker) — see comparison swatches.

The Lip Pencil formula is supposed to have “perfect, allover, opaque lip coverage” with a lightweight feel. I think the formula worked exceptionally well for lining the edges of the lips and keeping color on longer and more within the lines (e.g. a lipstick feathers on its own wouldn’t feather when layered over one of the lip pencils). Some shades worked well for filling in the lips for all over color, but some applied more unevenly or were less comfortable to fill in with. The consistency was soft, just barely creamy–almost more velvety than creamy–and oddly spreadable, as I found the best way to “even” out the coverage was to press my lips together, and while there was a touch of tackiness, the color almost always appeared more even after that than if I kept trying to maneuver and push the color around with the pencil itself. They do feel lightweight, and they lasted anywhere from five to six hours on their own. They weren’t spectacularly long-wearing as a standalone lip product, but they extended the wear of lipsticks by two to four hours.
