Burberry Brilliant Violet & Bright Plum Liquid Lip Velvets Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Brilliant Violet
Burberry Brilliant Violet Liquid Lip Velvet ($34.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium-dark berry plum with cooler undertones and a cream finish. It had rich, opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly across the lips. The texture was ultra lightweight with a more whipped, mousse-like consistency that spread easily and did not look streaky. Though it did not have a “dry down” like some liquid lipsticks, it was still long-wearing at nearly eight hours (plus a fuchsia stain was left behind) and started to look mostly matte after four to five hours of wear. The formula was comfortable to wear, as I often forgot I even had it on, and it wasn’t drying at all.
The Liquid Lip Velvet formula is described as having “rich pigment, smooth application” and a “velvet finish that lasts up to eight hours” that is “non-drying.” Overall, the formula is fantastic for those who want the fluidity of a liquid product without the drying aspect of more traditional liquid lipsticks while not sacrificing wear time. The formula does not dry down completely, so there will be transfer, but the product is so pigmented that the color lasts awhile. I’ve found the colors to wear between six and eight hours and easily survive a solid meal. The liquid lipstick has a smooth, velvety consistency that is almost weightless (I forget I’m wearing it) that was never drying and always comfortable to wear. A pleasant surprise was that the formula was unscented (with no discernible taste either), which is not the norm with Burberry’s products.

Bright Plum
Burberry Bright Plum Liquid Lip Velvet ($34.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is deep, reddish plum with subtle, cool undertones and a cream finish. It had a smooth, velvety consistency that felt more like a mousse but was still very spreadable and lightweight on the lips. The coverage was opaque, while the color lasted for eight hours on me. The formula was comfortable to wear and neither drying nor hydrating while worn.

I like Bright Plum a lot!
Me too!
I let out an audible “Ohhhh” for Brilliant Violet! Definitely getting this one!
It’s amazing!
I’m so happy about the excellent performance of these 🙂 I loved the colors and the way the swatches looked so much that I included them with the Sephora 10% off order I placed yesterday. Amazingly, I don’t have a dupe for Brilliant Violet, and the dupes I have for Bright Plum are significantly (to me, since this is a super-flattering color on me and I’ll wear them all a lot) warmer (Rouge Rum Punch) or lighter (Eggplant).
I find that if it’s a color I wear a lot, I can “see” more nuance (or justify slight differences) vs. a color I rarely wear! I’m loving this formula – it is sooo comfortable.
I am intrigued. Can you tell me how this compares to the new MJB liquid lip and the NARS velvet liquid lip formulas??
Velvet Lip Glides are more emollient and feel more gloss-like, and the Marc Jacobs ones have less of dry down and feel creamier/slippery longer.
Wow, Bright Plum is gorgeous and rated A+!! Impressive
It was amazing!
Bright Plum is gorgeous! I also love that finish.
Me too!
These are both flawless and so beautiful! Brilliant Violet looks *perfect* for spring into summer. Actually, I’d wear it any time of year because it is just that pretty! It makes me smile! ?
Haha! I love both shades 🙂
Both are great but Bright Plum seems a little more special
They are pretty!
Thankyou for these great reviews of the Burberry products. I purchased these a few weeks ago before reading your reviews. I’m not sure what’s going on with me concerning lip products. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older (late 40’s) and that my lips are always dry. I drink tons of water and slather on tons of lip moisturizers and treatments. The packaging is luxurious and the pigment is superior. In my opinion, I’d rate these much higher than the Chanel inks. After about an hour, wearing this product, my lips felt dry. I felt the need to touch up definitely by 3 hours. Touching up meaning putting on something emollient. The color was slightly faded but at least I didn’t have that horrible “whitish stuff” in between top and bottom lip and on the sides like when I wear Chanel. What is that stuff anyway? At least when I tried to touch up there was no peeling but, still difficult to put on. Putting a lip balm and clear gloss did not help and I really needed to take all of it off and start over again which, I have no time for. Also, the color of fawn rose looked like concealer on me. What is the matter with my lips?!
There might be an ingredient in either formula that is more sensitive for your lips? For instance, not all lip balms are hydrating for everyone (and obviously as a lip balm, it’s supposed to be). I don’t normally have dry/parched lips unless I’ve tested a lot of drying lip products myself!
I love how all your makeup looks in these photos!!
Thanks, Cat!
Gorgeous! I will be checking these out for sure.
Let me know if you try ’em, Linda!
I like both and they both look beautiful on you.
Thank you, Maria!
Christine, I would appreciate your advice. I love the Brilliant Violet but also have had my eye on Nars Velvet Lip Glide in La Main Bleue. Differences in formula and finish aside, which would you pick if you could only have one? (Highly subjective, but your opinion is what I’m interested in!) thank you!
I think they’re both nice, but I guess the real question is what are YOU looking for in a lip color? Do you want long-wear? Pigmentation? Shine? I find the Lip Glides are a little more lipstick/gloss hybrid, so they are more hydrating but shorter-wearing (e.g. La Maine Bleue lasted five hours) and have a glossier/shinier finish.
If you want something more like a lipstick, Burberry, and if you want something more like a gloss, NARS!
Point taken ? ! I tend to prefer gloss – to the exclusion of other lip products – so basically I need to decide if I will break out of my rut or just stay in it for this purchase. (Or maybe you just gave me an excuse to get one of each brand but a variety of colors! ) Thank you in either case. ?
So based on that, Velvet Lip Glides would make a great step towards other lip products that might not feel like a leap 🙂 I feel like this might be a way to be less in your rut without just going out of it for the sake of it (I imagine you enjoy gloss, and there’s nothing wrong with that!).
Ooo, I love these, but they’re so out of my budget!
They are pricey for sure!
These are SO pretty! The price tag is the only thing holding me back. I’m gonna have to wait until a 20% off sale rolls around…
Thank goodness they’re permanent 🙂
Both of these are beautiful!
Agreed!
I LOVE Brilliant Violet! I purchased BV from the UK online store over the weekend because it was only launching in my local (Singapore) counter late this week (desperate much? ;-P) . BV and Dark Rosewood arrived today in beautifully beribboned Burberry gift boxes.
One swipe, and I swooned 🙂 BV is now my perfect pinky-purple (trust me, I am the princess of pinky-purple), and the texture is dreamy.
So glad you are loving the formula, too, D! It’s amazing 😀
