Recently, new shades were added to the MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot range! I ended up purchasing all of the shades (except for one, which wasn’t available) since the last time I swatched the range was in 2013! So, here are swatches of 22 of the 23 permanent shades 🙂

Is Painterly darker than it used to be? Am I crazy?!
I thought it might be my screen playing up. It certainly looks darker than mine.
Same reaction here. I was hoping it was just my screen too!
We’ll see once Christine have had a chance to review the Paintpots ( I nearly wrote “painpots”).

Ooooh….this doesn’t sound good (but it does sound interesting as heck!)
They seem pretty comparable to the last time they launched new shades (I think it was the official change to Pro Longwear Paint Pots vs. just Paint Pots!) – shimmers are VERY emollient and slippery so they are sheerer and tend to apply unevenly compared to the matte shades (like the famous Painterly and Soft Ochre!)

I just hope they haven’t messed with the formula of Painterly, Groundwork and the other originals but I fear they probably have. Can’t wait for your verdict, Christine!

I thought the same too honestly. I’m nc15 and I used to use it as eyeshadow primer way back in the day
It looks darker than it used to be. I have light skin and painterly looked like a very light pink, kind of whitish on my lids.
That’s how I remember it, which is why I was so surprised and disappointed at how much darker it is when it arrived. I wanted it as an eye brightener. I didn’t return it, but I probably should have.
When I saw the Princess Cut jar I thought it might work for me as an eye brightener, but after seeing Christine’s swatch, it sheers out to nothing. 🙁
I agree about Princess Cut! I am a person that Painterly turns bright orange on, so I have been pining for a cooler base/light one-and-done eyeshadow Paint Pot from MAC. I guess that hasn’t changed! Double Bummer…
Awww painterly. Being using it for four years almost every day finally hit pan. I have bare study but it’s a different consistency more oily.
Similar experience here. It seems both more oily (on the surface) and also more dry in that it just isn’t smooth when I apply it, no matter if I’m using a synthetic brush or my fingers.
Princess Cut looks a lot less colorful than I thought it would be. Thanks so much for the swatches of these.
I am so glad that MAC have invested in these paint pots and extended the range, as I have been hearing for quite a few years on this blog by other community members about how much they loved the Paint Pot range. Now I can see why – the shade range is versatile enough to either be a one and done or be a base for other colours.
Psyched to see more shades but surprised they didn’t bring back Quite Natural.
I’ve got Painterly which is too dark for me since I was hoping it would be an eye brightener, and Let’s Skate, which I would love if it didn’t have the gold glitter in it. A lot of these new shade swatches look pretty dismal including the ones I was most interested in, so while I was initially glad to see that they were adding more shades back to the Paint Pot line, I doubt if I’ll be getting any of these.
It’s been sooo long since MAC has had a dark green Paint Pot. I wish they’d brought back Constructivist. I love that product! Is it me or does Tailor Grey look anything BUT grey, especially in the pot? (it’s a nice colour but on my screen, it looks more like a medium cool brown). Bougie looks like it might be an interesting shade….
Yes, they ought to have brought back Constructivist, Mariella. I’m eyeing Bougie as a good one ‘n dones.
Painterly has been a workhorse for me for years! I used it on its own for work every day, along with some black pencil along my upper and lower waterlines, black mascara, and some brow pencil; an easy, pulled-together and work appropriate look that I could apply in no time (which was vital when facing an hour+ commute on a subway line where there was never any chance to sit and finish my makeup, lol).
Even though I’m not working anymore, I’m thinking I still might add Bare Study and Vintage Selection to my collection anyway, so I have the option of a bit of shimmer now and then when I do get made up.
Thanks for posting this, Christine! The Paint Pots really are one of my favorite MAC products, and this inspired me to check out some of the other colors too!
Ditto on Painterly. When they discontinued Constructivist, I thought it would be only a matter of time til Painterly met the same fate but they’ve kept it which is a relief. I bought Bare Study a few years ago and thought it would be a real workhorse too, especially considering that I love a bit of shimmer/sheen in my eyeshadows but I don’t reach for it much – I find the shimmer in it a bit rough looking, especially on the inner corners of my lids and, as I say, I’m someone who generally loves shimmer. When things return to normal where you live, I’d advise trying it in store first, if that’s at all possible.
This has reminded me that Groundwork is such a workhorse product. Such a great one and done shade for my light-to-medium skintone. I haven’t worn it in forever, I will have to dig it out and show it some love.

I agree. Definitely not getting any of these. Hope the new UD eyeshadow sticks are good; I like the look of those.
I know for me, either Soft Ochre or Painterly would make excellent bases. But it’s Black Mirror that kind of has me thinking about it being a great option for a deep, smokey base for multicrome or duochrome eye looks.
I’ve used both Soft Ochre and Painterly as bases so many times! Soft Ochre is (obviously) much more yellow so it sort of just depends what I’m going for.

I recently bought Clearwater, Moss Definitely and Silver Screen. My swatches of Silver Screen looked similar to yours, a disappointment. For me, Silver Screen was a sheer topper, and I had expected an opaque shadow. But Clearwater and Moss Definitely are both delights. I loved that you swatched just about all of the shades for us!
I really wish they brought back Indianwood!
Great to see swatches of a couple of the old classic shades that have been on my radar a long time but I still haven’t gotten. Odd decision to release such weirdly sheer bright and deep shades, though. Thank you for posting these, Christine!

I’m glad to see the addition of Contemplative State as a potential base option for deeper skin tones when you don’t want quite the intense whiteout of using Soft Ochre & the extra blending work it requires.
I have to check my Painterly, I like the look of your swatch better!
The only other one that grabs my attention is vintage selection, and I’m pretty sure my Armani Liquid Eyeshadow in Magnetic could be a close enough dupe.

Bougie reminds me a lot of a mac thing I used as a cream eyeshadow in the late nineties, it was in a big pan and it looked like a cross between bougie now and mac club if it were cream. I can’t remember the name but I think about it a lot, it was good for a wash of color. I think they marketed it as all over color and it was the size of a blush compact
There was a paint in the tube that was similar but more brown I started using in the early naughts
I bought currant affair, it’s fabstract and contemplative state, all matte and all great. They have perfect pigmentation, not patchy at all and once they dry they stay on all day. I am very happy with them. Highly recommend
I’m so sad that Indianwood is gone. This paint pot was my one and done shade. I use Bare Study and Vintage for bases for my shimmer. Soft Ochre, Painterly, Ground Work, and Latin’ Lo I use to make any look pop. I thought I read some of theses shadows were limited edition. Good to hear they are permanent to the paint pots. Truly a MAC staple.
I’ve been using Bougie as a fun, more subtle eyeliner and it doesn’t disappoint! I haven’t tried it as a one and done look yet, but plan to. Very similar to the Blue Brown pigment in color.

Anyone with deep set eyes or hooded lids, have you had trouble with the new formula creasing? I used to rely on these for a great all day primer with no creasing and I am not sure if my skin has changed or the product. And, anyone with good dupes that are less expensive for paint pots? I have tried ColourPop and they are way too patchy or drying. I love the Maybelline ones but they really don’t have too many cool tones or neutrals.
Why didn’t they bring back Indianwood? Imma ugly cry over that one
