Tom Ford Lost Cherry Eau de Parfum Review & Photos
Tom Ford Lost Cherry Eau de Parfum ($320.00 for 1.7 fl. oz.) is a new, Private Blend fragrance available in a red-tinted bottle. It includes the following notes: “black cherry accord, bitter almond, griotte sirup Scenttek™, rose absolute Orpur®, Peru balsam, roasted tonka Orpur.”
In the beginning, I get wafts of slightly tart cherries that swiftly sweetens within a minute. There are tendrils of smoke far, far away in the background as the foreground is filled with the sweetness of cherries (the very fruity “black cherry” note), almonds (“bitter almond” note), and a slightly boozy element (the “griott sirup”note). But there is no mistaking that the scent opens and begins with cherries, cherries, and more cherries–sweet and fruity. It’s not a loud, billowing scent; it had low projection and low sillage. It seemed to project a bit more if I spritzed both my wrists as well as my front (getting some on my decolletage as well as on whatever shirt I was wearing that day). It wore close, though, from the beginning, and it was less loud compared to most of the Private Blends are (from what I’ve tried).
After an hour of wear, it’s noticeably less cherry-dominated, and it is a more blended mix of warmth and sweetness of cherries and vanilla with a hint of rose coming through. After two hours, the vanilla is stronger, the almond is a bit more noticeable, and the cherries recede into the background; when I sniff more closely to my skin, I get less cherry than if I do a deep inhale further away (then the cherries are a bit more present). The scent reads the same on me for the next few hours, just getting a bit more vanilla and less cherry as it progresses.
After seven hours, it was primarily a skin scent, though I got an occasional waft of the scent as I went about my life. When I went to bed (about 12 hours after the initial application), I still got tickles of the scent in my nose–there was mostly residual sweet vanilla and almond with subtle woodiness. It is definitely a more subtle scent compared to most of the Private Blends. I normally just wear one spray of my favorite Tom Ford scents but found at least two necessary with Lost Cherry. Whereas with more intense fragrances like Tobacco Vanille, I regularly know I’m wearing it, but with Lost Cherry, it was much more in the background.
In general, I get ridiculous longevity out of Tom Ford scents–sometimes I can still detect them as skin scents 24 hours later, even through a shower. I find the neroli-centered Private Blends to wear shorter on me (six to eight hours more noticeably). I don’t typically have issues with perfume wearing off of me in hours, so it seems my skin holds fragrance well. I have seen consumer reviews where the most common downside expressed is that this scent wears away very quickly. I don’t find that this is a powerhouse scent like some of the Private Blends (where one spray is more than enough), and it does not last nearly as well on my skin compared to my favorite Private Blends (Amber Absolute, Oud Wood, Tobacco Vanille, and so on) but wears similarly to Neroli Portofino.
I think that given this particular scent had its price increased within the Private Blend range, I’d expect it to have better, longer, and stronger wear with the same amount of product I normally would use. The Private Blends are already incredibly expensive at their usual $235.00 for 1.7 fl. oz. ($320.00 for 3.4 fl. oz.) price, whereas this is $320.00 for a mere 1.7 fl. oz. I enjoyed the scent–more than I expected as more gourmand, food, and fruit-based scents have never been my personal preference–particularly the almond note that I experienced. It definitely seemed like a well-done ode to cherries without being cloying or syrupy sweet. As with any fragrance, I’d highly recommend testing it prior to purchasing if you can.
I think I’ve only ever had and loved one food oriented fragrance in my life. It had a caramel macchiato note running through it. Lost Cherry sounds like a far more interesting, unusual one, except for the wear time. And at that super high price point, it really ought to wear far longer than what you experienced.
What scent was that, Nancy? This is not a category that I’m well-versed in at all!
Something that I still have 9 years after buying it from my son’s MIL when she was an Avon Lady! It’s called Jewel by Mark. What I still love about it is that neither it, nor the 2 that Avon collabed with Christian La Croix, smell “Avon-y”, if you get my drift.
I tested this at Nordstrom and Neiman’s both had it hidden behind the shelves so I had to ask for a spray. I really like it but like you said the longevity falls kinda short. I put it in my Sephora basket several times during the sale but ultimately I didn’t buy it. It’s so expensive but nice not too cloying and I love Cherries so much. I may get it eventually .Great review!
Are there any other cherry fragrances you’ve tried / enjoyed, Denise?
I like Serge Lutens Louve parfum it has rose, almond, musk amber and fruits notes. To me it smells similar to cherries. Also Sweet Oriental Dream by Montale with rose honey, fruits and almond notes it smells a bit like cherries. But I find it a little too powdery for me. I ate so many cherries this year because I’m obsessed with the fruit, lol.
If you are into cherry scents, maybe you’d like Prada Candy Gloss. I love it – I found it to be quite light and sweet and long-lasting. And the price is MUCH easier to swallow.
Thanks Thea! I check Prada’s Candy Gloss out.
Thank you for that indepth review of the new TF perfume. I really love his perfumes too and have Tobacco Vanille and Black Orchid.
My pleasure, Genevieve!
I was waiting for your review on this! I’m really tempted by this, because I love gourmand scents, but the price + complaints about wear time have made me hesitate. This gives me more to think about, although I’m still not quite sure whether I will purchase or not.
I know that Tom Ford is Tom Ford, so I don’t expect affordable pricing, but the Private Blends are expensive as they stand so I’m not sure why the extra cost on this particular scent…
Thank you for this review. I had to comment and let you know that your fragrance reviews read like beautiful love letters. I am swept away in your descriptions. It is practically impossible to review a scent, but you successfully review with ease.
I feel confident in my impression of the fragrance from your review alone.
Thank you.
Thank you so much, Audrey!
The couple of TF scents I got on scent box were way too heavy for me. I love fruity scents but that is way out of my price range. Love cherries tho.
I could see some of the Tom Ford fragrances being too heavy!
I want this just for the colour of the bottle! I will definetly need to smell this in person.
The bottle is gorgeous!
I’m not really a perfume person as I get headaches and migraines, but I was wondering about this. Thank you for the review. Then I saw the price and was OH HELL NO LOL
Yeah, the pricing is extremely high on this one!
I was wondering about this and I am so glad you reviewed it. My favorite Tom Ford of all time is Santal Blush but Oud Wood is on my list of favorites as well. Sole Di Positano in summer. This one intrigued me but I already felt that I spend too much on fragrance and couldn’t justify spending, especially with the price increase, at the time of its release. Winter is a time in which I expect increased longevity in a fragrance and so it seems as if passing on this was the right decision.
Yes, if you are concerned about longevity… I think so! Oud Wood is a beastly scent to me (I use one spray, which I find sufficient for me) in comparison to Lost Cherry. How is longevity on Sole di Positano for you?
Sole di Positano doesn’t have the longevity of Oud Wood or Santal Blush. I don’t know why but it doesn’t bother me as much in the summertime lol. It’s still pretty good for a light summertime fragrance, though.
I love cherries! Are there other good cherry scents out there? I bought this cheap-y roller ball once from Zara that smelled like cherries and loved it but haven’t been able to find anything like it.
I’m not familiar with this territory myself – it’s actually not a scent I would have been gunning to review but so many requests on it! Guerlain’s La Petite Robe Noire has dominant notes of cherries and almonds per Fragrantica users.
Fragrantica has all these under “cherry” (more useful if you have a favorite house) – https://www.fragrantica.com/notes/Cherry-297.html
Saw this post refer some traffic, someone looking for Lost Cherry similar fragrances from this review, lol! https://www.reddit.com/r/fragrance/comments/9w84qf/cherrybased_options/
Ooo…thank you! And hey, they reference Zara on the reddit page, too! I’ll be checking these out.
Thank you for this review. I know the primary focus of Temptalia is makeup, but I truly enjoy reading your fragrance reviews. Especially of Tom Ford Private Blend fragrances which I love but can only afford as a special treat once in a while.
When it was announced, I hoped Lost Cherry would be like an amped up, more complex version of Guerlain’s La Petite Robe Noire. Disappointed to hear about the poor longevity at this price point.
I’ll have to try that one again!
Sounds like sweet, sweet, and more sweet. I was never going to be tempted by this (because of the sweet foody scent), but the price doubles the odds of me never getting it.
The only perfumes that have ever lasted on me were ones I didn’t like; as much as I appreciate amazing scents, I have yet to find a perfume (cologne, EdT, etc.) that I thought was *me*, so it makes no sense for me to spend a great deal on smell-good-stuff, especially if the ones I favor don’t last more than an hour or so.
It’s sweeter but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it felt like sugar cookie sweet or syrupy sweet.
Any scents come close to being you? What’s the closest? I had a friend who smelled “baby vomit” with like 95% of scents she tried, LOL. It can be an ordeal!
Wow, that’s a particularly unfortunate association. :-S
Probably the closest have been Voyages d’Hermes (the EdT, not the cologne), and Fresh Hesperides. I actually mixed my own perfume out of grapefruit essential oil, as well as blood orange, bitter orange, bergamot, cardamom, leather, tobacco, and … a wood which I can’t remember off the top of my head. I’m almost finished with it, so I’m going to do a homebrew again soon with some adjustments.
Oh, I was saying it wasn’t like that… 🙂
Oh I know … just the idea that anyone could sniff a perfume and make that associations is mind-boggling — and to have it happen over and over again would probably put me off perfumes for life.
OOOH, okay, now I’m on the same page as you, ha ha ha. Blame it on lack of sleep!
Judging from the TF scents I’ve tried, the thought of a sweet cherry fragrance repels me. TF fragrances are too thick and heavy for me. And though I love fresh cherries, I don’t usually like cherry-scented products. I am not a big fan of very sweet, fruity fragrances, for the most part, anyway. (Plus, the name “Lost Cherry” is another turnoff.) And then there’s the way-out-of-my-range price tag!
So this is an easy pass.
Oh, this one is definitely much lighter compared to most of Tom Ford’s scents, so there’s that, but obviously if the notes, price point, etc. are also deal-breakers, it is an easy pass!
I love that you reviewed a perfume, though. And such a great, informative review, too!
This is one I’d love to try.
I love cherries, but have never tried a fragrance with cherry scent.
I usually go for vanillas and classics, my favourite fragrances are Chanel No 5 and Shalimar from Guerlaine.
I also have liked and loved quite a few of YSL fragrances.
I don’t think I’ve ever even tried a TF one, I get a bit intimidated when I see the line up of secretive looking dark bottles 🙂
I loved reading your description of this eau´de perfume.
I just bought my grrandmother No. 5 body lotion and purse sprays for her birthday! It is a classic scent for a reason.
Wow, that price! Clearly intended only for multi-millionaires to purchase. If this was a decent price (less than $90.00 for 3.4 oz.) I would consider it.
