Guerlain #999, 777, 520 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Colors (2018) Reviews, Photos, Swatches
#999
Guerlain #999 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a translucent, white and silver glittery top coat with a glossy finish. It is listed as a top coat shade (though it can also be worn alone), so the lack of coverage wasn’t unexpected. There was a subtle white base that gave my lips a lighter color, and I could see that the milky quality of the base pulled into my lip lines. It felt fairly smooth in the tube with minimal noticeable texture from the sparkle on my lips as well, which was nice. It did not wear very long–two and a half hours–but was moisturizing.

Formula Overview
$36.00/0.12 oz. - $300.00 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to have "intense colour" with a hydrating base that includes things like jojoba and mango butter as well as hyaluronic acid (and gugul resin) to "help to smooth and plum up lips." I would describe the formula as somewhere between semi-opaque and opaque, often buildable, with a luminous sheen that seems like there's very, very fine pearl but less distinctive shimmer (except for the shades that are actually shimmery).
I find that the magic of the formula is in its finish--it's shiny, luminous, and absolutely smoothing on the lips without compromising wear (four to six hours, sometimes longer). The formula is very hydrating and comfortable to wear. They have a sweet, floral scent but no discernible taste to me. The updated shade range seems to have a stronger emphasis on mid-tones in coral and red and less beiges than before.
The Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Colors have been updated but mostly with respect to packaging and the shade range, as the formula itself has not been changed (per the brand). The lipsticks are now available as refills for $32.00 each, and then one can pick from an assortment of cases ($15.00 each), though each refill comes with a small, plastic cap that keeps the refill from drying out while waiting to be sold. The refill cap seems like it would be sufficient to keep the lipstick long-term, but I can't say from experience. I have not tested each shade for wear, but the shades I have tested, initial swatches and applications, and the like make the formula seem the same as before.
The old Rouge G cases do not fit on the new refills as the case doesn't stay on without a magnet (it just slides right off). I don't yet have any of the cases as they weren't available to me to purchase yet, but I plan to pick one or two up merely to see how they feel (probably the Original, to see if there was any weight change, and then something new).
A big upside to the refillable packaging is that they're actually significantly less expensive buying them piecemeal than buying it all-in-one. The original Rouge Gs were last sold at $58.00 for 0.12 oz., and now, the all-in-one price is effectively $47.00 for 0.12 oz. -- that's a nearly a 19% reduction in price.

#777
Guerlain #777 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a light-medium, yellow gold with warm gold micro-sparkle and a yellow-tinted base. It is listed as a top coat shade (though it can also be worn alone), so the lack of coverage wasn’t unexpected. I wish there was less of a base color and more sparkle, as I felt that the yellowish base was somewhat streaky and rather prone to pulling into my lip lines (which I find very uncharacteristic of a Rouge G). There was good, even dispersion of the shimmer, and I did not feel any grittiness in the tube durin gapplication, but I could feel a very subtle texture on my lips while worn. It lasted for three and a half hours on me and was somewhat hydrating.

#520
Guerlain #520 Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color (2018) ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is an ultra-sheer, soft pink with a luminous sheen. Per the brand, this is a “pink that is only revealed on contact with its wearer lips” and that the end result is “always unique.” I didn’t notice any change–it appeared as a soft, translucent pink on me (and a warm pink in the tube) whether on my skin or lips. I waited 10 minutes prior to photographing waiting for a visible change but no luck on my end. This shade amounted to sheer, pinkish lip balm. If this had provided more of a stain, it would have been interesting, but while hydrating, it’s not as hydrating as the best lip balm. I also felt like this didn’t wear very long (two hours) as the texture was thin and very emollient.

These all get a loud “Oh h3ll NO!” from me.
More than 25 years ago, Revlon put out a Moondrops topper that was similar to #777, but it had spf15 and looked nicer than this overpriced excuse of a topper!
#520 would be downright LAUGHABLE if it weren’t so sad!
Ooh, I wish there was a drugstore dupe of #777. It’s a really pretty effect, that’s just an absurd price for something like that.
Oh dear, these aren’t worth the price! Colour Pop’s and Sephora’s new line are so much better.
Mon Dieu, alors! Quelle horreur!
Oh wow. All I can say is that I’m glad these three weren’t on my radar. I hope the shades that interest me do better. On the other hand, if they don’t…(lots of) money saved!
Guerlain, the last thing you should be doing at your price point is producing poor quality in one of your best loved products.
Now these are just silly. That last one is almost identical to Smith’s Rosebud Salve.
This is what I (and probably a lot of other makeup lovers) was afraid of when Guerlain announced a new formulation of Rouge G. I hope this isn’t indicative of all the new lippies. 🙁
