Natural Eyes

Too Faced Natural Eyes Eye Shadow Collection (2018) ($38.00 for 0.45 oz.) is a new, permanent neutral eyeshadow palette that’s an update to the brand’s long-time favorite, Natural Eyes. I’m not sure how well it compares to the last edition, as the one I have is actually from 2009 and isn’t quite the same (different packaging and shades are slightly different, too). I can say that I think the matte formula used in the palette is an upgrade from Too Faced’s more typical matte formula used in their various palettes, as it had more substance to it so they were less dusty, more pigmented, and better applying. The eyeshadows had a sweet, vanilla scent emanating from them, which may be a deal-breaker for some.

Heaven

Heaven is a light, yellowed beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. It was moderately powdery in the pan but very finely-milled and almost velvety. It had good pigmentation and did not sheer out too readily on my skin, so I could actually see it lightening/brightening an rea on my skin tone. I did find that the powderiness made it prone to fallout while applying it, so it often turned crease colors grayish when I used it on my brow bone. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Silk Teddy

Silk Teddy is a light peach with warm , orange undertones and a frosted sheen. The texture was lightly powdery, though very soft and blendable on my skin. It had nearly opaque color payoff that applied evenly and stayed on well for seven hours on my lids.

Push-up (2018)

Push-up (2018) is a medium-dark, rosy bronze with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good color coverage in a single layer, though it wasn’t quite opaque. The texture was slightly looser and drier, but it applied well when I pressed and patted it on rather than swept the eyeshadow onto my skin. It would work particularly well with a dampened brush or over a primer. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Ingredients

Mica, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract/Oryza Sativa Extract, Zinc Stearate, Sodium Saccharin, Talc, Aluminum Dimyristate, Benzyl Alcohol, Boron Nitride, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil/Cocos Nucifera Oil, Coumarin, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Methicone, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Polyethylene, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Sorbic Acid, Tin Oxide, Tocopherol, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Vanillin, Carmine (Ci 75470), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491, Ci 77492, Ci 77499), Ferric Ferrocyanide (Ci 77510), Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891).

Erotica

Erotica is a medium-dark, plummy taupe-brown with subtle, warm undertones and flecks of gold micro-sparkle over a matte finish. It had rich color payoff in one layer. There was some fallout during application and later on during wear due to the larger sparkles, but it wasn’t too noticeable. The texture was smooth to the touch, slightly drier and more firmly-pressed, but it applied evenly and blended out with little work. It lasted for eight hours on me.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Dimethicone, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract/Oryza Sativa Extract, Sodium Saccharin, Aluminum Dimyristate, Benzyl Alcohol, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil/Cocos Nucifera Oil, Coumarin, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Ethylene/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Lauroyl Lysine, Methicone, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Poloxamer 338, Silica, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Sorbic Acid, Tin Oxide, Tocopherol, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Vanillin, Zinc Stearate, Ultramarines (Ci 77007), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491, Ci 77492, Ci 77499), Manganese Violet (Ci 77742), Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891).

Strip Poker

Strip Poker is a light brown with warm, golden undertones and a matte finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a soft, velvety texture that wasn’t too softly nor too firmly pressed in the pan, so it was easy to work with and wasn’t messy in the pan. The eyeshadow stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me.

Ingredients

Mica, Talc, Ethylene/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Dimethicone, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract/Oryza Sativa Extract, Zinc Stearate, Sodium Saccharin, Lauroyl Lysine, Aluminum Dimyristate, Benzyl Alcohol, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil/Cocos Nucifera Oil, Coumarin, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Methicone, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Poloxamer 338, Silica, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Sorbic Acid, Tocopherol, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Vanillin, Ultramarines (Ci 77007), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491, Ci 77492, Ci 77499), Manganese Violet (Ci 77742), Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891).

Pretty. I wish TF was reformulating the Boudoir Eyes palette as well. I definitely would replace mine (I love the colors but they are quite dusty to work with).

Mariella Avatar

I have the original version of this little palette – the one in the cardboard box with the drawer holding a brush underneath the shadows. So I’m unlikely to purchase another one of these in the 2 or 3 “redesigns” there have been since I bought mine. It was good that they took out the one really dreadful shade in that original 9-pan (Nude Beach – a nightmare glitter bomb if ever there was one) but they also eliminated a terrific crease/transition shade called Velvet Revolver….a cool, rather than orange toned, transition shade that was just wonderful. I do wish, in changing some of the colours, they’d have opted for some less sex-related names (Strip Poker? Come on!)

Nancy T Avatar

Oh my gosh, I really wanted this. Until I read the part about “sweet vanilla scent”. At which point, I looked at the ingredients, and now I want to curse out Jerrod Blandino to the heights above!!!! He added SODIUM SACCHARIN to these newly reformulated palettes DAMNIT!!!! I am fuming on behalf of not just myself, but every other makeup lover who has a SULFA allergy. This ? does NOT belong in makeup, especially EYESHADOW!

ann b Avatar

Thank you so much for the heads up, Nancy! I will certainly cross this off my list to purchase. Are there any other products you know of that I should avoid? I tried searching the ingredient in Sephora and Ulta’s search bars but nothing came up (including this palette!)

Meg Avatar

Oh no! I had no idea and I have had severe reactions to sulfa in the past. I just bought this palette but I may have to return it now. Not worth the risk!

Deborah S. Avatar

I have the original and still use it fairly often. I had thought to update by purchasing this but on reflection I don’t think I need to run out and buy it. I have hit pan on three of the shades in the original and close to hitting it on 2 or 3 more so we will see. I don’t seem to be using it for complete eye looks but rather to add a deeper color, transition color or brow bone highlight when another palette doesn’t have those tones.

Genevieve Avatar

Why Too Faced why do you take a lovely palette and then wreck it by using all those tawdry names? This is a sophisticated palette and yet you undermine it by choosing tacky and juvenile names for the shades.
Rant over.
This is lovely, but the shades are oh so dupable. However it is handy to have all of them in one place. The formula has improved and the shades are well co-ordinated.
Your eye look is stunning Christine

Meagan Avatar

You clearly just aren’t in their target audience. We all know Too Faced uses tounge in cheek sexy names, and some people enjoy that. This isn’t something new.

Just don’t buy the palette if you don’t like it.

Sara Waterhouse Avatar

That’s why I’m not buying the palette. I can’t deal with the names of the eyeshadows. And while the target audience of Too Faced may be young girls, I wonder what the parents of those young girls would think of those eyeshadow names? Just imagine a 13 year old girl whose mother is complimenting her on how well her makeup turned out and the 13 year old girl says, ” Well Mom, I used Sexpresso, Strip Poker and Erotica on my eyes!”

Genevieve Avatar

I agree with everything you say Sara – I just wish Too Faced would grow up and realise that sexualising the names is so out of step with what is happening in our society today. I quite like the palette, think it is one of the best they have put out for awhile, but I am not buying it.

Sara Waterhouse Avatar

I also agree with what you said Genevieve. In this day and age we don’t need companies sexualizing products. There is no need for ANY makeup company to name their shades with these kind of names. Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when I was getting into makeup it was innocent. But now we hear too much news about young girls/women who are being abused and here comes these makeup companies to add fuel to the fire so to speak. Why bother even naming eyeshadows at all? Isn’t what the colors are the important thing? Are giving eyeshadows these stupid names going to make them work better on the eye? Of course not. I felt the same way about the Naked palettes ( I had the first 3 plus the first Basics one.) But my conscience always bothered me so I threw them out. I have friends with sensitive consciences who would’ve been stumbled by it. The only Too Faced palettes I own are Sweet Peach & the first 2 chocolate bars. I don’t intend to buy anything else from them if this is the direction they will continue to go in.

Genevieve Avatar

I must admit I was a tad shocked at some of the names for the Naked palettes (why call them naked? why not the neutrals palettes, for goodness sake.
Another brand I won’t buy from is NARS – their names for their products are just rude and crude.

Sara Waterhouse Avatar

I don’t think my husband was pleased when I owned the Naked palettes. I don’t own anything from Nars. Of course now the Just Peachy Mattes palette has finally been released in the UK. I might buy it. No scary names!

Frannielocks Avatar

For those of you who cringe at the sexualized and crass names found in many palettes these days, may I suggest applying a bit of opaque nail polish over the offending names? Crisis averted. All that drama aside, I think this is a lovely palette and a big improvement over the original, which I never purchased simply because of the one terrible glitter bomb shadow that spewed sparkles all over the rest of the shadows and the bulky packaging. While the metal box packaging was a big improvement over the original cardboard, this newest version is absolutely GORGEOUS—sleek, sophisticated, and pretty. I picked up the tester in Ulta to swatch the shades and instantly HAD to have it even though I know I have many shades that are dupes for these scattered about my collection. It’s great to have all these shades in one palette but the awesome packaging was the final kicker that pushed me over the edge into buying it lol.
