Introduction to Too Faced

Introduction to Too Faced

I’m new to this brand. Where should I start?

A Few Notes | Their blushes have a great texture and appearance on the skin, and they wear at least as long as the average blush, but they don’t wear as long as they’re marketed as (so if you aren’t a stickler for claims and/or that’s not a hard requirement, I would still recommend them!).

Their eyeshadows require primer or a base underneath. They are blendable and fairly easy to use as long as there is a primer in place, but the consistency is a little thinner and dusty (but soft). This type of texture tends to be harder to use on bare skin (prone to applying unevenly or turning patchy). They have a lot of eyeshadow palettes (not so much singles), and they also have various limited edition palettes throughout the year. In my experience, the 9-pan eyeshadow palettes and their permanent palettes are almost always better than their limited edition palettes. That being said, there are some limited edition palettes that have been good over the years but looking for swatches and reviews prior to purchasing would be ideal.

There is a lot of love for their Better Than Sex Mascara, which I like but is not a personal love (it seems too wet initially and then gets to dry too readily). Their more recently reviewed Born This Way foundation is often mentioned, and they have since expanded the range (when it initially came out, it was a very yellow-toned range). Their Shadow Insurance and Glitter Insurance are both excellent primers/adhesives for your favorite eyeshadows, including the brand’s own.

What would you recommend to someone just trying Too Faced for the first time?

I am really enjoy Bon Bons palette – I would actually recommend it over the original Chocolate Bar(s), though it of course comes down to personal preference on colors. And while I don’t think they are widely well-reviewed, I happen to LOVE their Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush. I have all 3 shades and I love them all almost equally, plus the packaging is just so adorable!

I find that they need to be broken into. When I started using it, it was very unpigmented. After a month of use, it’s coming off quite pigmented! It also lasts all day. It’s my favorite blush!

I personally have very limited experience with Too Faced products, having only owned 2 products ever. But I absolutely LOVE how moisturizing and plush the La Creme Lipstick formula feels on! Whenever I use my tube of Pink Chocolate for the day, my lips are in way better condition at the end of the day than before. Also of note is that whenever I’ve tried on their Melted Lipsticks, they also felt really nice, too.
I did own the original Chocolate Bar Palette for all of 6 days. Best neutral palette shade wise ever, but if you have a sulfa allergy, look out!⚠

I’m a huge fan of Too Faced, and I think you’ve got a great introduction there. I’m particularly partial to their blushes, myself, and I own two of the ones you mention– Justify My Love & Your Love is King. I love my Melted Fig lip color, too. The only thing I’d add is their Primed & Poreless Pressed Powder, which I swear by wearing UNDER my foundation for longer wear.

Ohhh I love everything Too Faced!! I would definitly recommend getting one of their neutral palettes, I have three and my most used is probably Natural Matte. Their Chocolate Soleil Bronzer is amazing, and I love the blush in Baby Love because it’s so versatile. So far I’ve honestly not been disappointed with anything except Better Than Sex which flakes on me, but it seems to be individual.

Some people don’t like Too Faced’s girly, cutesy packaging but I love it!
*The Heart Blush in I Will Always Love You is one of my fave peachy blushes, so pretty with the gold shimmer, then you throw in hearts and bunnies, and resistance is futile.
*Too Faced Metallic Melted Jelly is one of my all time fave purple lippies, very wearable because it has a translucency and pretty shimmer to it.
*Like their holiday palette Everything Nice, a very fun palette. There are a few duds in there, but for the most part, the shadows are decent to good with primer, great mix of colors and finishes, and included blushes/highlighters too.
*Also like their Melted Chocolate lippies, and yes, it has a chocolate/cocoa scent 🙂

To me, their liquid lipsticks are more beautiful, more comfortable, and easier-to-apply than most I’ve tried, and their regular lipsticks are nice, especially Jelly Bean, So Berry Sexy, and Pink Chocolate. I think that the Milk Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer is one of the better options out there for fair-to-light skin tones. And their tinted BB cream is a nice option for someone who needs sun protection from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide only, as long as an SPF of 20 is enough for you and you like light-to-medium coverage with a bit of a glow to your finish. It was one of the products I liked best before I found IT Cosmetics CC Cream with its SPF of 50. I liked their eyeshadows a lot when I first started wearing eyeshadow, but over time I’ve come to prefer more intense options like the new MUFE formula, Ardency Inn’s formula, and the Kat Von D Metal Crush eyeshadows; if you like you eyeshadows more subtle, and wear primer anyway, I still think Too Faced makes some nice ones, although their neutrals have been warm, warm, and warm lately. I haven’t tried their newer blushes for some reason — none of the colors has been calling my name.

I think I’m the rare people that doesn’t like the melted lipsticks. I think the scent gives me a headache and I don’t like the taste is gives out. Yeeeeeet I love the chocolate bar collection and everything.

Too Faced was my first high end product I ever got from them and I love the brand since. I also loved their Sweetheart flushes blush, it works so well on me and it gives me a nice subtle glow to my warm and fair complexion.

I think I own more Too Faced products than any other brand in my collection. That hasn’t happened on purpose but I just really like their products and I think it is one of those brands that has excellent products in most categories. A real “all-rounder”.
I own and recommend:
– better than sex mascara
– the Natural Matte palette (my go-to, every day palette)
– the semi sweet palette
– Milk Chocolate Soleil bronzer
– Melted lipsticks in Chuihuaha, Berry
-Melted Metal in metallic peony and metallic macaron (I got these in the Xmas pack and I’ve been surprised at how much I love these. I’ve been wearing them non stop!!)
– La Creme lipstick in Taffy and Spice Spice baby. Love these so much.
– lip liner in perfect nude.

The chocolate Bon bons palette isn’t out here in Australia yet but once it gets here I’ll decide on whether I want it or the original chocolate bar – I’ve had my eye on it for a while.
I tried the Born This Way foundation a couple of time and while I loved the way it looked on my skin at first, it basically slid off and looked gross within 2 hours and worse – it broke me out!! Both times I used it!!!
Despite that, I love Too Faced as a
Brand ?

I can’t really comment too much about this brand as it is hard to get here in Australia. Their smaller eye shadow collections are quite distinct and specialized eg mattes, neutrals, bright colours etc. Their lipsticks, blushes and foundations tend to rate well.
If I was starting with a new brand, I would try their lipsticks and blushes first.

I really think you did a great job with your recommendations here Christine. I maybe would add the new Bon Bon palette. I think it’s pretty decent. If one keeps in mind to use a primer, it will serve for many looks. I personally love, love the Melteds and the Love flush blushes. I just now am starting to appreciate the La Creme formula. I so far have Wham and Pink Chocolate. Love them both. Late to the party on that. I like that TF actually brings in a lot of permanent products to their line.

Ashleigh Avatar

I think they have some very great offerings, especially to makeup beginners since their eye palettes are overall very good and include instructions/ideas for looks. 🙂 Their La Creme lipstick line has my all-time favorite lipstick, Nude Beach in it. I also enjoy their bronzers (I have the bronzer wardrobe but I think the OG chocolate is my favorite). I have been using their eye primers for years, those are like the never-ending gobstoppers of product. I would also recommend the champagne eye primer. I wear it on its own all the time! (today too, actually, ha). I like the melted chocolate liquid lipsticks better than the original melted formula. I think they’re not as drying and wear better for me.

The Chocolate Soliel bronzer is my favorite thing to contour with and my favorite Too Faced product. I also love the la creme lipstick in Naked Dolly and Berry Naughty, its so moisturzing. I also own shadow insurance but have eyelid primers I prefer over it.

I adore Too Faced! I’m a big fan of the Chocolate Bon Bons palette and the original Chocolate Bar. I like every lipstick I’ve tried except Melted Peony, which looks ridiculous on me. I bought the blush palette to test out all the shades, and their blush formula seems to work really well on me. The only problems I have with Too Faced products are the fact that the Melted lipsticks (which I like anyway) transfer a lot, and I have the exact same problems with the Better Than Sex mascara that Christine mentioned.

Also, Shadow Insurance>UD Primer Potion. It’s now the only eyeshadow primer I use!

For the most boring TooFaced rec, their clear lip liner excels. IMO, it’s better than Ozone, Sephora, and Milani. Milani isn’t bad for the price, but the tip melts above 70-75 degrees, so that leaves out half the country and more than half a year, further north! Eyeliners are not a strong point. Romantics is a solid pastelly palette, with primer. I like that many of their eye boxes have larger sizes of base shadows, and smaller pans for the accent colors. I get a fair amount of use from their anniversary palette, TooFaced Loves Sephora. That, too, has bigger pans for more used shades. Never tried Better Than. It sure flies off the shelves. Might try the upcoming waterproof formula. Never really got into their lip wear, either. TFSI is decent. Bought more TF 10-15 years ago, seldom now. I think their blush is fairly strong, but often not my preference for shades. I’m too busy lusting after Nars and MUFE. They do put out some nice gifting options.

KJH Avatar

Oh,yeah, forgot that I really like Snow Bunny. Gotta drag it out. I can find fault with most bronzers, but I like that one, esp. In the winter, when we northeasterners pale out. It’s quite light. Like it a lot. Don’t favor any of their others so much. It’s WAY down-pan. Might need another, and that NEVER happens, with massive stash syndrome! I think it’s the pink and white stripes that keep it from leaning too warm. It’s a very different look for a bronzer.

Ginny Avatar

The only TF product I own is Boudoir Eyes palette. Def recommend it though. The shadows are somewhat sheer as you describe but I almost feel like that makes it more fool proof. They blend really easily and it’s good for all skin tones and eye colors.

I love Too Faced; definitely one of my favorite brands. Shadow Insurance is my HG primer for my oily lids, and is the first thing I’d recommend. I’d also recommend any of the three Chocolate palettes; The Cat Eyes Palette; the Flush Blush, especially Baby Love; the La Creme and Melted lipsticks; Milk Chocolate Soleil Bronzer for fair skin; the Candlelight luminzers; and Cocoa Powder Foundation.

As Nancy T. has pointed out, many of their products contain saccharine, which can set off sulfa allergies, so be sure to read the ingredients list.

I’ve had little eperiencecwith two faced. I think I had an eye shadow everyday matte pallet. I liked it but seldom use it. Some of the lip colors took good to me though.

Laura Avatar

“I will always love you” is a go-to coral blush. I’m not a fan of the packaging–not bc of the cutesy factor but it’s kinda hard to open. I’m a fan

Aline Avatar

I think the original Chocolate Bar palette is fantastic. When I’m in a hurry I’ll use the two shades in the bottom left hand corner (a gold and medium brown shimmer) and I’ll get compliments every time. I use primer every day, so I don’t mind having to do it with their shadows. If it doesn’t flake on you, then Better Than Sex creates am amazing, voluminous look to your lashes. Unfortunately, it flakes on me and I’ve never had a mascara do that to me. Sometimes I suck it up just because the look is so great.

My personal Too Faced favorites are their milk chocolate soleil bronzer (I have fair, cool toned skin for reference), la creme lipstick formula, especially for everyday pinks, and matte eyeshadows (if you like a soft look). I used to love Too Faced shadow insurance, but the last two tubes I had both separated badly, so I wouldn’t recommend that formula anymore. I also wouldn’t recommend their eyeshadows for anyone who wants high pigment, dense, buttery formulas – I find them silky and lightweight with a softer pigmentation.

Maggie Avatar

I really love the bronzed and poreless pore perfecting matte bronzer–an HG product for me (I lost all interest in other bronzers after getting this one several years ago). I don’t have very large pores so I can’t comment on how well the poreless part works but the finish is skin-like with no shimmer ( so it looks natural in day-light) and every time I use it, it looks like I’ve been out in the sun. I am NC 20 and keep in mind I use this to look sun-kissed, not for contouring.
