Lipsticks | 2013 Editor's Favorites

2013 was good year for lipsticks, particularly if you loved yours bold, bright, and/or matte. There were new formulas to fall in love with, and plenty of new and limited shades released from my favorite formulas. This was a tough list to compile! Because I really do believe variety is the spice of life, I tried to pick across a variety of formulas!

What lipsticks did you fall in love with this past year?

I am lipstick obsessed. I fell in love with Estee Lauder’s lippies this year. Some of my faves: Estee Lauder’s Pure Color in Barcelona Rose (my HG red) and Mirrored Orchid (a gorgeous metallic plumb). I tried MAC’s retro matte lipsticks and my favorite was All Fired Up, which worked perfectly for my complexion (I’m olive yet fair skin toned with green eyes and dark hair). Other favorites included: Lancome L’Absolu Rouge in Champagne, Covergirl Spellbound, Urban Decay Revolution in Anarchy, and Arbonne in Candy (Estee Lauder makes a dupe that is also called Candy). Em cosmetics by Michelle Phan was an unexpected HG this year. I picked up the sheer lipstick in Showstopper (baby pink), the matte finish in Cuddling (“pepto”pink), and the creamy classic finish in Posh (mauve). All 3 are fantastic and I get compliments. The formula in the range feels luxurious and high end.

I just got Givenchy Brun Creator a week or so ago and you are so right about the incredible formula. Also, the colour is the perfect everyday warm pink (without being too cool or bright) on me, basically the exact colour I’ve been looking for for ages now. It’s easily my favourite lipstick right now – and for me, that’s saying something.

I really want the whole range now.

I’m THRILLED to hear it!!! Okay, so anytime I fall in love with a formula, I get nervous about it, because I’m afraid it’s just me and everyone else will be like, “eh, no big deal.” So when a reader does love it (even half as much as me, ha!), I’m SUPER happy. And relieved!

I’m afraid these great lists are not going to help me keep my New Year’s resolution of spending less! I have wanted to try the Givenchy Le Rouge line for awhile.

This is my favorite list, but since lipsticks are my weakness, it was the hardest one to narrow down. 🙂

Mine are:
1) Burberry Lip Mist in Oxblood
2) Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colours in Envoutante, Excentrique, Farouche and Rouge Noir
3) Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour in Grace
4) Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro in 201 and 502
5) Guerlain Rouge G in Madame Batifole
6) Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Colour in Merlot

Christine, would you refresh my memory — are Buxom lipsticks fragranced?

This year I re-discovered Clinique Longlast Lipgloss — so moisturizing it just about healed my chapped, dry lips! Also tried Laura Mercier’s new line of “waxless” lipcolors; the shades are beautiful, but I wasn’t in love with the formula — it didn’t seem to apply evenly, or stay on very long.

Thanks for another year of great posts, and Happy New Year to you and yours!

The Buxom lipsticks actually have a faint sweet scent and there is flavor listed in the ingredients. BUT, it’s definitely so faint that some people don’t seem to notice. I would give this a try even if you’re sensitive to fragrance/flavor bc I am too, but this Buxom formula doesn’t bother me.

Dior Rouge Diors (especially Darling, Trafalgar, and Mazette), Dior Spring Ball Addict Extreme, Guerlain Flirt, Guerlain Provocative! I have also been giving my regular Guerlain Rouge Automatiques a lot of love. They have just the right amount of pigment for minimal everyday looks, but they’re never boring!

Stephanie Avatar

I forgot to mention my more vampy picks: Bobbi brown creamy matte lip color in crushed plumb and rich lip color in crimson are two fabulously bold, rich formulas with great color payoff.

Honestly 2013 has been such a dissppoining year to me lipstick wise. My favorite lipstick formulas (old Urban Decay and Cle de Peau Extra Silky) have been discontinued. I’m still on the hunt for a great formula. The best ones i have discovered this year are Dior Addict and YSL Rouge Volupte Shine. They both have a formula that don’t wreck my lips and look smooth and glossy on. I haven’t found a HG shade from either brand yet, though.

All of those are gorgeous! I wish I could afford some more high end lipsticks. I picked up the Too Faced All I Want For Christmas set on sale at Ulta and it had a Too Faced La Creme lipstick in it – my very first high end lipstick! Although not as high end as Chanel, Tom Ford, Givenchy, etc, I still consider it high end. Basically if it’s not drugstore prices, it’s high end LOL 😀

I absolutely LOVE the formula of the lipstick and the color is gorgeous. I am going to look into some more shades from that line. I also want to try the Urban Decay Revolution lipsticks. I was hoping to get the Black Friday set from UD that had 6 lipsticks, but it was sold out. ;'(

Other than those two formulas I have had Givenchy “Magnolia Organza” on my mind since you posted the review earlier this month. It’s seriously the pretties lipstick ever. I might splurge on it soon because I think it’s so beautiful! It’s all your fault Christine! 😛

Christine Avatar

There are almost four tiers… you have mass (drugstore), mid-end (which is mostly MAC), high-end (UD, Too Faced, etc.), designer (Chanel, Givenchy, Guerlain), and then luxury (Tom Ford, Cle de Peau, La Prairie). But I’m with you: if it isn’t priced around drugstore stuff ($10 or under usually for most color products, excluding stuff like foundation!), it’s high-end!

Too-Faced La Creme Color Drenched Lip Color in Spice Spice Baby, Shu Uemura’s Celebrity Beige and Mu Shu Red. I have backups of the first two. I did not buy any Burberry lip sticks this year but I am still in love with the ones I bought last year.

Christine Avatar

Burberry’s formulas are really nice! I kept going back and forth on whether to include one from the Lip Velvet formula or not but I ended up going with other things (but it’s a great formula… I am just not as drawn to mattes personally).

I don’t have a top 10 myself (I’m lucky to remember my name let alone which lipsticks I got in which year) but I know one I got not too long ago and love is the Bite VIB Rouge special edition lipstick. I know compared to how much you have to spend to get to that status, a mini lipstick isn’t a huge thing. I love the color and the formula, though, and find myself using it a lot.

Aida Avatar

My favorites this year:
Burberry lip cover Tea Rose
Burberry lip velvet Rose Pink
Burberry lip velvet Pink Amber
Dior Addict Diorkiss
Dior Addict Lip Glow (not technically a lipstick, but I’ve worn it the most)
Dior Rouge Dior 999

Stephanie Avatar

2013 was the first year I wore lipstick! In prior years, I wore gloss only. I’m a total convert now, and the line that completely won me over was the Too Faced La Cremes! I don’t have the color you listed, Christine, though I have swatched, swooned, and convinced myself I couldn’t pull off the color on many occasions!

Sunny Avatar

This year I have fallen deeply in love with the YSL Rouge Volupte Shine formula. My two favorites are #7 and #8, both pinky neutrals. My spring/summer challenge is to purchase #12, a coral. Waaaaayyyy out of my comfort zone. Happy New Year!!!

The Urban Decay Revolution lipsticks were truly a “revelation” for me. Beautiful colors, long wearing and non-drying on my lips. My first one was “Naked” and I got “Rush” for Christmas. Crazy about these! Oh and the case is pretty sweet, too. Your review was so thorough, Christine, that I will have no problem picking up additional colors!

Lily Avatar

Fell in love with Lancôme lipsticks this year specially Color Design in Natural Beauty and Absolu Rouge in Luxe. Also Nars lipstick in Bilbao due to your review.

Renu Avatar

Mine are Lancome Rouge in Love 230M, 300M, 353M, 156B; Bourjois Rouge Edition in Rose Tweed; Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet La Raffinee; Barry M TMLP (where were you all my life, you green monster?); MUFE Rouge Artist Intense in 29; ColorU Cosmetics in Matt Cinnamon; Givenchy Le Rouge in Brun Vintage and Guerlain Rouge G in Avarice.

I fell in love with Buxom Exhibitionist Full Bodied Lipstick this year! It’s so pigmented and I find it really hydrating! It’s a shade that looks really flattering on me too. It’s the only one from the brand I own, but it definitely leaves me wanting to try other colors!

Tovah Avatar

This is driving me crazy. I saw this woman at a party with the most perfect orange-red matte lipstick. I shamelessly asked her to tell me what this great lipstick was and she said she “didn’t know”. Yeah, right. lol. I must have that lipstick. Can anyone give me some thought as to what it might be? Appreciate it!

Christine Avatar

Without seeing it… man, I have no idea.

But here are all the swatchs I’ve done of orange and red lipsticks with: a finish of matte, semi-matte, or satin; warm undertones. I still picked semi-matte and satin, because by the time you saw her, it might have started off as a satin and the sheen wore away to something more matte.

Ruca Avatar

My favorite matte orange-red is MAC Scarlet Ibis, which turns out to be identical to MAC Lady Danger. I didn’t see either in the swatches, but I may have just missed them like I miss my typos all the time! LoL I know Christine has reviewed and swatched them, and listed them as dupes for one another, so they are here to be found! 😉

Didn’t know what lipstick she was wearing… sure! I hope you find it!

Ruca Avatar

Oh MY. I love lipstick so much… nothing up there I don’t love! I was actually wondering if a MAC lipstick would hit the list at all since they don’t seem to be a reader fave, but Private Party is a good one, and the best of that collection. Honestly, I have discovered I love Morning Rose from the Magnetic Nude collection better, which is shocking since I usually don’t care much for Cremesheens. My huge sleeper favorite this year was Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Volupte Shine in 19 Fuchsia in Rage. There is nothing about this lipstick I don’t love, and I think it’s been around for at least 3 years. so that shows how slow I’ve been in starting my YSL fascination. Great list!

Ruca Avatar

Oh, for sure! I meant in your blog overall, there are many favorites, & MAC doesn’t seem to dominate as the favorite if your followers. Maybe half of mine are MAC people, but my collection and follower base is no where near as expansive as yours! 😉

I think I was mistaken about Fuchsia in Rage. On the YSL site it’s listed as new! How did I miss that? I also found 2 decent dupes for Morning Rose in Estée Lauder and Tarte, but still prefer the MAC, personally.

Ruca Avatar

It’s Precious, one of the Lip Crème Surgies from the QVC Bow & Go holiday set. The 4 Surgies are lipstick consistency, unlike any other Surgie I’ve seen. The color is nearly spot-on, but less pearl. It’s a better match than the EL or Haute Altitude. Closest I’ve found, so far!

Sylirael Avatar

There are *so* many things I’d love to try from this list!! Especially the Buxom lipcolours – I believe the even have one called Rogue!

My favourite lipsticks new this year (to me, anyway) would probably have to be the MUFE ones in 15 and 49 that I got (shimmering violet and blackened purple) – such a great formula, and despite being ‘difficult’ colours, the application, staying power and coverage are amazing for both!

KK Avatar

I was waiting for this post and saw it, don’t know how I missed putting in my thoughts. My top favourites this year:
Guerlain Rouge G Genna and Girly
Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro – #401 – Tibetan Orange
Givenchy – Rose Dressing and Corail Decolette
NARS Satin Lip Pencil – Lodhi and Luxembourg
Coco Chanel Cambon
Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Colour – Rose Blossom
YSL Glossy Stain #9 – Rouge Laque
YSL Rouge Volupte – #9 Caress pink

Yay for the beautiful world of lipsticks!!
