MAC Tropical Taboo Mineralize Rich Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches
MAC Tropical Taboo Mineralize Rich Lipsticks
MAC Tropical Taboo Collection’s Mineralize Rich Lipsticks ($22.00 for 0.14 oz.) come in five shades: Divine Choice, Glamour Era, Lady at Play, Luxe Natural, and Midnight Mambo. The latter is the only limited edition (and new) shade, which is the only shade I’ll have reviewed in this post, because the other four are permanent and were just reviewed this past March. 🙂
Midnight Mambo is described as an “intense violet.” It’s a fuchsia-shimmered magenta with cool undertones. It as semi-opaque coverage that was buildable from semi-sheer to semi-opaque–most of my lip freckle is hidden but there is some translucency across the whole lip. Given that it’s a Mineralize Rich lipstick, which is supposed to have “medium shine” and “buildable coverage,” it felt a lot like the others in the range, but it did seem slightly sheerer (even if you only compare to the other four featured in this collection). It lasted six and a half hours and left a slight stain behind, and it was lightly moisturizing while I wore it. Revlon Lollipop is more muted. Maybelline Hot Plum is less shimmery. MAC Show Orchid is more iridescent but is very similar. See comparison swatches.
The Mineralize Rich Lipstick range was released in March, so please refer to these links for reviews of: Divine Choice, Glamour Era, Lady at Play, Luxe Natural. For reference, I have included the photos for all of those shades within this post but for reviews, ratings, dupes, and so on, please read their respective posts 🙂

Dammit!! So much for the MAC no buy. Midnight Mambo you hit below the belt.
Wow – I totally ignored the lippies when I was in MAC last week. I’m going to have to Mambo back over. I think that shade will actually work well on me.
Love the site! You always look so good in all the colors…makes it hard to decide. 🙂
Just received mine in the mail today. So disappointed, it was melted. Gonna have to go to the counter to get another one.
Divine Choice=Gorgoeus!
Wow all of these look amazing! I haven’t been excited by MAC’s new lipsticks in forever. This is a buy!
Question: what is the difference between the first and 2nd shot of your lips with the lipstick on. One looks shinier than the 2nd.
What is with direct light, one is with indirect light!
Midnight Mambo and Divine Choice are to die for!
Love Midnight Mambo! I have to add Divine Choice to my list too. 🙂
Very nice. Thanks for the fast swatches! Narrowed down the colors for me, now I’ll wait for your performance reviews!
there is an Anna Sui that looks a lot like Midnight Mango as well (Lip Rouge V – 360) that is a really nice formula too
Ooh!!! I like the “Lady at Play” shade!!!!
It really brings out your eyes and the blush on the cheek
I really thought Mambo would be more purple. It’s still a beautiful color regardless. My friend who missed Heroine is going to be disappointed when she receives this one. Yikes. Thanks for the swatches.
Hi Christine, I love the swatches. Thank you!
Are you no longer doing the little blurb stating what else you are wearing? I ask because I love you pair things and buy off of that.
What are you wearing on Lady at Play and Glamor Era?
Thanks, Monica
Hi Monica,
Those are photos from March that are only here for reference (because those shades are being repromoted in this collection) – for full information on those photos, please go to the original posts (linked above). Thanks! 🙂
ahhhhh, great – thanks 🙂
I was just thinking Midnight Mambo looked just like Show Orchid, purple shimmer and all, before you updated this review. I also, totally uncreepily, screenshotted the swatches so I could compare them side by side (swatch gallery doesn’t work so well on my mobile phone). I also own Pink Pigeon, Night Blooming, and a couple other similar shades, but you have successfully introduced me to Maybelline Hot Plum. I don’t understand why they are calling MM a vivid violet, but it’s beautiful regardless!!
One day, once we’ve built out MyTemptalia (Dupe List, Foundation Matrix, etc. all need to be updated first) and iron it all out on desktop (it does work on mobile, but obviously with a smaller screen, it can be harder to use!), we hope to have enough awesome features to justify the cost of building an app 🙂
damn… i’m so not a huge lipstick person but these are just beautifulllllllllllllllllll. you look amazing in midnight mambo, divine choice, and lady at play! so pretty!!
Christine, once again, thank you so much for all your hard work. Makes my shopping so much easier because it gives me a good idea of what I might want.
I have never tried a Mineralize lipstick before. Do they compare in any way to the Sheen Supreme lipsticks? I like Midnight Mambo a lot, but I hate the Sheen Supreme line… don’t care for the texture at all. Thanks so much!
Love midnight mambo! Christine, do you think it’s at all like style curve?
Style Curve is sheerer, shinier, less bright.
LOVING Midnight Mambo. How does it compare to Feel My Pulse from the Temperature Rising collection ??? They appear to be extremely similar to me…
Feel My Pulse is darker, less shimmery, more subdued.
Lady at Play – gorgeous!
Oh wow! Midnight mambo, divine choice and glamour era are on my wish list. I was really hoping to only buy a few items from this collection since I bought nearly everything from the all about orange collection but the skinfinishes and lipsticks are so tempting!
Oh my…I’ve been behaving so good…but must have midnight mambo!!
(off-topic) – love your earrings in the first pic!
Christine,
If you were to get one of these lipsticks, which one would you get?
Lady at Play, I guess? It’s hard to say since four are permanent, and then it just matters what color you’d wear often or what you feel would look best on you! 🙂
Midnight Mambo is so cute!
I like Midnight Mambo, but not enough to be tempted to resume buying MAC.
In fact, just today I wore Illamasqua “Atomic,” and it seems somewhat similar, though maybe less purple.
It’s gorgeous!
Like Glamour Era but it might be too dark for my NC25-NC30 skin.
I am in love with Midnight Mabo and Divine Choice!!! Beautiful!!
Lady At Play is calling my name. It’s such a pretty, bright color!
omg i love the nude shades. i used to not like them because i didn’t think they flattered me and I’m not into nudes that have a lot of brown in it, or look like concealer. you know what i mean. I’m just looking for the perfect shade of nude with a little pink in it. but i like the subtle of orange. if you could recommend any other perfect nudes for my ivory, skin with a bit of yellow and cool undertones that would be cool.
Thank you for the beautiful swatches Christine.
Does anyone know if we can Back 2 MAC for these?
My guess is no because they’re much higher in value, but I’d call or check with your local store/counter. I haven’t done B2M myself in years, but I remember it being a wildly varying policy from place to place.
I have a ysl rouge volupte shine in #19 fuschia in rage that seems to b spot on, it’s pricier but at least it’s not LE. Try n find it to compare!
Oh, I was raving on Midnight mambo, but also purchased YSL Fuschia in Rage last month, and I’m wearing it all the time these days… Did you find out if it was a dupe or somewhat similar? That would save me some money for holiday… ^-^
How do they compare?
Hey Christine,
thank you for swatching the TT LE. I wonder if I “need” Midnight Mambo if I own Feel my pulse from the Temperature Rising LE?
Thank you 🙂
You don’t need it, but Midnight Mambo is more muted, less shimmery.
I just got Midnight Mambo and I was a bit unsure of the bright color when I opened it. But it has a sheer quality to it that I appreciate and feels really nice to wear. My lips feel good while it’s on. I love me my Guerlain and Chanel lipsticks but this one is definately a keeper as well.
Happy to hear it, Terri! 🙂 I like the Mineralize Rich formula a lot, so it’s a good one to try!
Ms. Christine all those colors look awesome. Midnight Mambo looks super cute. I’m looking for a replacement for MAC lip lacquer Veneer. Is this a good replacement?
I haven’t seen Veneer in ages, so I don’t have a great idea of what it looks like, but from memory, it seems like this would be similar.
