MAC Quite Cute Lipstick Swatches, Photos, Reviews

MAC Quite Cute Lipsticks ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) feature four shades new and limited edition shades, plus one repromote (Saint Germain). The shades included are: Candy Yum-Yum (matte neon pink), Quite Cute (creamy bright whitened lavender), Saint Germain (clean pastel pink), Playing Koi (creamy white peach pink), and Playtime (creamy intense violet).

  • Candy Yum-Yum is a neon, magenta pink with a matte finish. It’s nearly glowing in its brightness. On me, the blue undertones seem to be pulled out. I feel like I’ve seen this color, but whenever I compare it to a possible dupe, it isn’t pink enough (purpler instead). It’s pinker than Madly Magenta cream colour base (from Stylishly Yours, ’10). It is surprisingly creamy and not at all clingy for a matte. The closest I found was Petals & Peacocks, which is several degrees brighter (Give Me Liberty of London, ’10).
  • Quite Cute is a semi-opaque pale lavender with a semi-glossy finish. It has a cremesheen finish, and it has the same texture, but the finish seems glossier to me. It’s a paler, sheerer version of Blooming Lovely (Give Me Liberty of London, ’10). Pinker than Lavender Whip.  On cooler skin tones, this is easier to work with, while warmer skin tones may want to pair with a more pigmented lipstick/gloss.
  • Saint Germain is a really pale, cool-toned pink that is blue-based. It’s been released several times, and you can see an older swatch here. It is best suited for those with cooler skin tones. The closest permanent dupe is Snob, but I believe this was mad epermanent last year.
  • Playing Koi is an opaque pinky peach with a satin finish. Honestly, this lipstick looked like garbage on my lips–it highlighted every single imperfection and amplified them ten-fold. I exfoliate my lips every few days, and for reference, I exfoliated right before doing this swatch! The color itself is like Angel and Hue had a baby.
  • Playtime is a semi-sheer magenta purple with soft sheen and shimmer. It has a cremesheen finish. It’s similar to Style Curve (from Stylishly Yours), but this is purpler, less fuchsia.

my thoughts on the formula: MAC Lipsticks are vanilla-scented but taste-free. I typically get four hours of wear, but some of the lighter lustre and glaze finishes tend to disappear by hour three. Amplified cremes and amplified finishes, however, tend to go beyond four. I find the formula comfortable to wear and not drying (but not moisturizing–a couple of the matte shades can be drying).

Why am I strangely drawn to the ‘Quite Cute’ lipstick?! I don’t think it would look flattering on me in the least though! Lovely overview thus far, thank you so much for all the work you do ! xx

Nora Avatar

Lilacs and purples are surprisingly flattering on most skintones. I have brown hair, green eyes and NC15-20 skin and they’re one of my favorite colors to wear (I think they look even better on darker skin, too). I say try it out, you never know. ^^

Judy Avatar

I’m getting both! I can’t resist purple lipsticks of any shade. They relax me for some reason. Candy yum yum is just too cute of a name not to buy. 😀

Mertle Avatar

I’m 14, too, and I agree…no way I am passing up Candy Yum-Yum! Mac’s permanent line doesn’t have very good matte shades, so I am definitely going to snatch this one up:)

Carla N. Avatar

I already own just about every bright pink/fuchsia lipstick that MAC has ever made; Girl About Town Full Fuchsia, Hollywood Nights, Show Orchid, Lickable, etc.
Does that mean I’m skipping Candy Yum-Yum, like a rational person would?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I’m getting it and Play Time, and backups are not out of the question for either of these!
I think *my* spring has come; I LOOOOVEE bright lips!
I think I need to breathe into a paper bag … 😀

Jess Avatar

I think it is so cool to see that eye look with both of those lipsticks (and the plush glass). It is crazy how with the pink colors, the purple on the waterline gives a tired/red eye look and with the purple lip it looks etherial and gorgeous! It is cool to see how a lip color can pull different undertones from the eye look!

Nadia Avatar

I’m pleased to say that I’m not tempted by anything in this collection! I spend way too much makeup as it is lol! I’m struggling to stop myself from buying that Armani l/s (#507) that you swatched recently. I tried it out on myself and it’s stunning! I haven’t given in yet. I seriously have so many lipsticks, there’s no way I can say I NEED this. ~Sigh~

On another note, how do some people get a little personalized avatar beside their name??

greylen Avatar

So, how would you compare Candy Yum-Yum to Show Orchid? Just when I thought you couldn’t get anymore redonkuously bright than SO….. WOW…. so pretty!!!!

Deb Avatar

I am LOVING Candy Yum Yum, but I don’t think it will be practical enough for me to buy. I have a hard enough time finding places to wear Girl About Town!

Morena123 Avatar

I wear mine everywhere – To the Mall, Out to Eat, When I go out dancing, when I go to festivals, waterpark even though yes it might cone off, I am also a promotional model and work events so I wear it there too. For a more professional environment though, i wear a more toned down pink. You can wear it anywhere!

Lilinah Avatar

That neon pink is definitely not for me! But i may pick up Quite Cute to wear over other colors — i doubt i can pull it off alone. I’m still eager to see Play Time. I am a such sucker for blue violet lipsticks. I discovered Go For It last year after it was sold out most places, but managed to find a department store that still had some.

I really love your eye makeup, Christine! So fresh and spring like! I have the UD Asphyxia eyeshadow pencil – how close is its color to the UD Asphyxia eyeliner pencil you are wearing?

kfm Avatar

Hooray! I almost picked up NARS SChiao today, but decided to hold off until I saw Candy Yum-Yum instead. Glad I did, because I think I like it more. Quite Cute is… well, it lives up to its name. I have both Booming Lovely and Lavender Whip, so I’ll have to see whether or not I love this one.

Devangi Avatar

Hey Christine. I’m a NW 40 and I’m looking for a bright bold pink lipstick for the spring/summer. Between Show Orchid, Girl About Town and Candy Yum-Yum, which pink would you recommend?

loveletters Avatar

GREAT swatches as usual! Cancy yum-yum is omg neon isn’t it? Is this anything close to NARS’ Schiap? it appears bolder and brighter and I just don’t know how that is possible ??!!

Leesh Avatar

I have Schiap, and I must agree that Candy Yum Yum seems MUCH brighter and Bolder, which for me is EVEN BETTER as I love a bold lip. I will absolutely be at Nordstrom on the 7th to purchase both lippies. I do have a question Christine, would you consider Quite Cute pigmented enough to for color payoff on a naturally pigmented lip? I don’t have super light pink lips, so EXTREMELY sheer colors do NOTHING for me. But in my quest to fulfill my purple lip fascination, I buy EVERY purple lip shade I find. What’s your opinion for me?

Leesh Avatar

sidenote: I have Goes and Goes, Violetta (searched HIGH and LOW to find it), MUFE Rouge Artist Intense #15, and Illamasqua Fierc….any other suggestions for great purple/lavender lippies for me with a pigmented payoff? I am ADDICTED to purple lips right now and my hubby LOVES when I wear them! 🙂

samantha Avatar

hi christine 🙂

this isnt really important but im just curious- do you know why the candy yum-yum printing is bigger than the quite cute lipstick??? just wondering 🙂

Kayla Avatar

I love how you’ve been including pictures of the ingredient lists, especially since MAC doesn’t provide these online. Thanks, Christine!

Gina Avatar

I’m not into the colors for this collection, but it’s good to know at least the lipsticks are good! Even if the colors don’t sing to me, it makes me sad to see lots of mediocre grades for a new MAC collection, because I know someone somewhere is disappointed!

leesie Avatar

One day I’m going to buy a ridiculously bright lipstick like Candy Yum-Yum just to wear places like Rocky Horror or something. It’s probably a really awesome feeling, but I am nowhere near that brave.
Arrrgh, if only I had a fairy godmother to tell me what lipsticks I can get away with wearing with my looks. That’s always just mystified me, unfortunately. One day I will actually do some research and then hit up a store with a friend for some hardcore testing. I really should expand from nudes.
Actually, while I’m here, does anyone have suggestions for what non-nude lipsticks a pretty pale, cool-toned (at least, I /think/ I’m cool-toned…), bold shadow-wearing girl should start her search with? I most often wear blue and teal looks, with the occasional green and purple look thrown in. I just don’t want it to look like too much.

leesie Avatar

Thanks, Christine! I might pick up a drugstore hot pink today. I have a feeling I can pull it off but have just been unsure, but I’m going to try it with a softer eye look. With summer coming around (and my shadow collection sufficient, if I’m honest with myself), I think it’s time I got with the lipstick and -gloss program.

Carla N. Avatar

I, too, favor the idea of pinks.
I ‘m NW15; black-brown hair; bright green eyes, and I find MAC’s Pink Burst to be a bright, but very wearable rose pink.
It came out as a limited edition last spring, I think, but there are probably still some floating around.

Jai Avatar

I love bright pink lipsticks so I will definitely be picking up Candy Yum Yum.. Thanks Christine for all these swatches and reviews… <3

Lilac Avatar

The Eye-Makeup looks great 🙂
I really wanted to buy Candy Yum Yum but I guess I’ll have to admit that it would not suit me 🙁

Something I`m surprised about is that MAC uses Paraffin in a formula (in the Matte) but perhaps that has been so for a longer time and I just haven’t noticed because I do not own mattes. I have always appreciated MAC for using pretty good ingredients in their lipsticks.
The other thing is the Cholesterol in the Amplified (same thing, do not own Amplifieds, mainly Lustres and Satin), which also popped up in the new Sheen Supreme-formula). I wonder from which source the Cholesterol comes and why is it in lipsticks that are ingested partly during the day:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholesterol

I might consider to write to MAC and ask about this, I don’t really like it 🙁

BeautifullyUnique86 Avatar

It would be the two that catch my eye I already own lol. I have Petals and Peacocks…which might I add LOOKS EXACTLY the same as Girl About Town on my complexion NW45. And then I bought Blooming Lovely. I’m the glad that I didn’t actually buy Girl About Town and that it was a Back to Mac….I would’ve been pissed lol.

Cassie Avatar

CHRISTINE-what about MUFE’s Rouge Artist Intense lipstick in shade 36 (satin fuchsia) for a dupe of Candy Yum Yum? I’m loving CYY but don’t want to buy it if it is similar to the one I already have from MUFE.
THANKS!!!

Beto Kylie Avatar

Hi Christine!
I love both lipsticks, but I’m not sure if I have something like Quite Cute. How does it compare to Hello Kitty’s Fashion Mews??? I’d appreciate your response! 😀

Kezia Avatar

Is Candy Yum Yum only Limited Edition? I’ll have to stock up on about six of them if so! Also St. Germain is permanent isn’t it?:/ (It’s my all time favourite makeup shade if it’s not permanent I’ll need to stock up on another six!)

Morena123 Avatar

I LOVE that pink, its definitely going to be MINE! I am the queen of bright pink lipsticks. And I put the release date in my calendar already. I never buy the mac quads but I am definitely feeling this one.

Christine, can you swatch this one against Nars Schiap and Girl About Town as a comparison when u get them thanx.

Jan Avatar

This is my type of a Pink lipstick. I’ve been waiting for this collection to arrive at your site! I will definitely buy a lot of candy yum yum I promise!!! 😀

Sylvia Ayisi Avatar

Christine, can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE respond to this. ( as i post a comment before here and on facebook and got no response 🙁 ]
I am brown skin NW47 with cool under tones. Would you recommend candy yum yum? ( love the name CANDY YUM YUM) lol

Ashley Avatar

Hi Christine!

I came across your fotd for the Hello Kitty event with Lavender Whip on. I absolutely love the combo you used there, and you look just plain incredible. Do you think Quite Cute would look good layered like that with a pink or fuchsia lipgloss? I’m not sure if it’s too white based to look good like that…?

I’m really tempted to get it to have fun layering over and under things, especially if it looks crazy on me when I try it on. For example, I thought it might look nice layered over a magenta or hot pink lipstick or under a pale pink to make it a touch more light and lilacy. It’s just such an interesting color.

Well, I think I just convinced myself to get it, lol!

Avy Avatar

Hi Christine! Do you have the correct price for the lipsticks? Its 14.50 not 17.00? Is 14.50 is the PRO price or the regular store price?

Thanks in advance

boompsie Avatar

ok so I’m a bit late on the comment train here – but man I love those, I’m teetering on whether or not to buy them right now online! You know, Yum Yum is reminding me of a hot pinker Violetta and Quite Cute is reminding me of a whiter, pinker Lavender Whip – kinda sorta? You know what would look cool over that Quite Cute I bet is Illamasqua Fierce, which I ordered along with Succubus, & Surge – my 1st order from them so we’ll see how that goes!

Katy Avatar

If I hung out at artsy bars and nightclubs, I would totally wear these. They’re pretty much nighttime-only, unless you’re in certain scenes.

Polly Avatar

Playing Koi – cute color but OH MY! DRYNESS! GOODBYE!

I have petals&peacocks so no go for Candy Yum-Yum (it looks luscious on you)

I like both Play Time & Quite Cute! Might get them! (if I can track them down)

Sam Avatar

I have this thing for purple lipsticks. Especially lavender. I really want to get Quite Cute, but it is sooooo sheer, that I am not sure if I really will love it. If it was more pigmented, I would definitely get it, but I am still not sure. I really love Candy Yum Yum. I was going to get Makeup Forever #36, but I will get this instead because it is cheaper, and more pigmented!!!!! But, Playtime bores me, even though it is purple. And I wish the I love u plushglass was more pigmented too. 🙁

Michilicious ~ Avatar

I love Candy Yum-Yum and Quite Cute!! Playtime looks really cool, too. I want all of them. 😀
Playing Koi does look disgusting though… Too bad, ’cause I love koi fishes D: Atleast if you want that color, you could use Angel and Hue together then 😛

Morgan Avatar

Need candy yum yum, quite cute & playing koi. Not sure about Playtime since I already have style curve & like it. I am drawn in with candy yum yum & quite cute. I had a color like that years ago and loved it, but it was creamier not so shiney. I still want quite cute even though i think as an amplified cream it would have been better.

Tina Avatar

Thank you so much for posting the ingredients! It’s so difficult finding out what’s in products. I never paid attention to ingredients until I got pregnant and started to watch everything that goes in or on my body. It’s very much appreciated!

Kristina Avatar

I love love love Candy Yum Yum and Playing Koi. I actually got to swatch it at my local Mac two days ago and I fell in love with it even more! I think Playing Koi looks different than what I’m seeing in this blog. Here’s another swatch from another blog that may change other people’s minds about it.

http://www.xsparkage.com/?p=2870

Ashley Avatar

Playtime and Quite Cute for me :)I missed out on Style Curve, and it looks like Playtime will be just as good. I love how glossy Quite Cute and Playtime look! Sad that Playing Koi looks so terrible on the lips though 🙁 On the bright side, that means I will spend less money!

Jennifer F Avatar

I’ve bought Candy Yum Yum but skipped the others although I liked the look of Playing Koi and Playtime I thought Playing Koi was dupeable and I already have purple lipsticks. Now I’ve seen your swatches, Playing Koi is awful but I so want Playtime, it just looks beautiful and very wearable compared to most purples and I like the sheerness of it. I will have to try to pick that up tomorrow. I’ve already got a list of products to check out when I’m in town from your site haha!

Morena123 Avatar

Wow, well im not fair-skinned but since visiting temptalias page (for 1 year) this is my first time seeing a collection from MAC where I want just about everything and plan on buying it.

I want 3 of the lipsticks
– DEFINITELY Candy Yum Yum
– Playtime (I have style Curve already so I might skip this one. Im running low on it already though)
– Quite Cute (will try in store first before buying)

I am actually interested in the palette, i know that christine mentioned its more for fair skin, but I have brown skin you would think it will show up better on a darker “canvass” and I have other pastel colors from MAC (Fresh & Easy fro The Groove Collection and both light pink lipsticks), will definitely check that out.

I saw the blush swatches on youtube from another user and I LOVED the colors, so I want one of those, its exactly what im looking for, something thats not too pigmented.

Oh and I love the nail polishes!! I want the pink one and aybe the green. I’m not sure about the purple one yet

Carla N. Avatar

I completely agree that Show Orchid and Candy Yum-Yum are *not* dupes.
They are both screamin’ bright, true, but Show Orchid is a teeeeeny bit deeper, with a dash of purple, while Candy Yum-Yum is pure unapologetic fluoresecent PIIIIINK. I just love it.
However, I found Playtime to be a little “meh” on NW15 me. It’s almost like a very dilute version of Violetta. I love Violetta much more!

Melissa Avatar

Do you think candy yum yum and playtime will be too bright for chocolate skin complexion women? Usually pink is too bright for me but pinks that have a purple base tend to look good on me. I think Im NC 50. I dont know if you know who Naomi Campbell is but I am about her complexion

Lindsay Avatar

Did you have any issues applying Quite Cute? I have heard a few complain that it applies patchy. Your application looks great, so I was wondering if you had that issue. Thanks for the review once again!

Mercedez Avatar

eww….Playing Coy..was nasty girl…I can see what you mean..But the rest looked nice on you..I don’t know how you do it..The exact same pose and smile..for each and every picture..[lol]..:D

THANKS!!!

Eva Avatar

I have both of those shades! They’re sort of close. CYY is straight PINK! Think a step from pink highlighters–it practically glows next to my fair skin. MUFE is fuchsia so next to CYY it looks a bit redder, and MUFE has a bit of a sheen to it where MAC is a straight matte. Personally I like the texture of the MUFE a little more but the colors are different enough for me to justify owning both.

sonia diana Avatar

i find with the lustre’s they do tend to fade easy. this is a quick fix all you got to do is put a wee bit of clear glass or some dazzle glass ontop of it and your lipstick will last longer.

Amber Avatar

I was just looking and about to buy Playing Koi, I’m so glad I looked at your swatches first! I was so lucky I didn’t just waste £13, thank you xx

Lynn Avatar

Hi! I love your blog, and these swatches make me want Candy Yum-Yum so badly. A quick question, though, if you don’t mind? 🙂

Are you familiar with YSL Provocative Pink? Would it be worth getting Candy Yum-Yum if I already own that? I love hot pink lips, but I don’t want to buy a dupe.

Thanks!

Carla N. Avatar

Even though I LOOVE bright lips, I was going to make myself pass on this collection.
However, it soon became obvious that I *need* Candy Yum-Yum (kind of a goofily named lipstick for a 46-year-old college graduate to own)so I gave myself permission to buy that one, as soon as it went online.
So, beginning on Tuesday of this week, I “stalked” the MAC site, and waited. And waited.
And waited.
Then I went to Nordstrom.com, and the collection’s promotional image was there, but the only lipstick offered was St. Germain, in which I have not the slightest interest.
In a flash of inspiration late yesterday afternoon, I went to the MAC site and searched “Quite Cute,” and there it was!
I figured, apparently correctly, that Candy Yum-Yum would sell out in a hurry, so I fired off an order for it, and remembering what I’d seen on this site, threw in Play Time, too.
I can hardly wait to get them!
What liner does everybody like with Play Time?

Eva Avatar

I checked the website this morning to see that CYY said ‘sold out’, but I just checked again and it looks to be back in stock. Anyway, since it was sold out this morning I went and picked up the last tube (yay, lucky me!) at my MAC counter and I’m so glad I did! I have super-fair cool-toned skin and this is absolutely the crazy pink for me. Still may go back for Playtime and two (or three, haha) of the nail polishes.

Sydney Avatar

I MUST get Candy Yum Yum! It’s sold out online, so if they don’t have it at my MAC store or counter, I might cry… lol. But if they do, I’m buying two… would buy three be pushing it?

Carla N. Avatar

Those of you looking for Candy Yum-Yum: You might try phoning MAC at
1-800-387-6707. I’ve sometimes been able to obtain “sold out” items at retail price by phoning that number and ordering directly from MAC.
If you don’t mind paying a bit more than retail, I’ve heard that Amazon.com has still got some.
Happy hunting!

Sam Avatar

I got quite cute, and I really like it. I wish I would have gotten Candy Yum Yum, but I didn’t because it reminded me A LOT of Make Up Forever’s #36 lipstick. I am shocked that Playing Koi sold out almost instantly though…

Carla N. Avatar

I’m really glad I’m getting both Candy Yum-Yum and Playtime; I fired off an order for both at the same time last Thursday, when they were still in stock on the MAC site.
None of the others appeal to me; Quite Cute reminds me of sort of a second coming of Lavender Whip, which is a fun color but rather difficult to wear. Playing Koi and St. Germaine are just not my kind of colors.

xara Avatar

Hi christine, you site is great,i check it every day.The photos of swatches are my favurite thing.I want to ask you if playtime will fit me or will be too dark on me cause i have really pigmented red lips.I can’t tell if it is bright or dark.

Isa Avatar

Just bought the last Candy Yum-Yum in our MAC store here in Mainz (Germany) 😀 Love it!
Can you believe it, Quite Cute was released in Germany just yesterday?!

Mayu Avatar

So apparently, I was living under a rock the whole time this collection as been out and stayed there long enough for the collection to be discontinued.. *cries* So Temptalia, I know you’ve probbaly gotten this question like a million times, but do you know where I can get “Candy Yum-Yum” from at a reasonable price(under $50)?

fetish Avatar

hi, have you tried mac pro longwear lipcreme in love forever? cos im torn between candy yumyum and love forever!!!! i havent tried any of those two. thanks alot!!!

TLC Avatar

I am LOVING the Candy Yum Yum!! I gotta have that one! I like the Playing Koi as well, although not as much but it’s a nice neutral type color. The other two I’m not impressed with. I can honestly say I really don’t care for the Quite Cute. It’s a little icky looking IMO. :/

sadista Avatar

I got playtime, but since I’m Asian, I’m a NC30, but a bit yellowy, I’m afraid of wearing it! Well, the truth is I have no clue how to pull it off!
Any advice? =]

Kimbra Avatar

Hello Christine!  Thank you for providing your review and swatches – I greatly appreciate your site and passion.  Would you recommend MAC’s Candy Yum-Yum over OCC’s Lip Tar in Anime?  I know that both are neon pinks, which is what I am aiming for, but would like a pigment that is not practical-joke-bright and could easily transition from office to happy hour to night out.  Any insight and feedback is welcome and appreciated!  Thank you!  All the best!
