Here are some of my personal recommendations for lip products to pick up while Sephora’s offering 15% off! Beauty Insiders use code TICKET, VIBs use code VIBTICKET, and Rouges use code ROUGETICKET. :) Feel free to share your recommendations for other readers to try!

  1. Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Creams (review) are really intensely pigmented liquid lipsticks. I’ve tried three shades and have loved all three! (Pictured: Moscato)
  2. Guerlain Rouge G (review) is my all-time favorite lipstick formula, and it’s by no means inexpensive, so a sale is a great time to indulge. Love shades like Gemma, Girly, Gisela, Genna, Garconne, Gigolo. (Pictured: Genna)
  3. YSL Glossy Stains (review) are glossy, pigmented, and long-wearing lip colors that come in a wide variety of shades. These are lovely for someone who likes a glossy lip but needs longer wear. (Pictured: Fuchsia Dore)
  4. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick (review) is a pigmented, comfortable, hydrating, and moderately longer-wearing lipstick that comes in a good variety of shades from beige to plum. I really love shades like Anarchy, Naked, Streak, and Venom. (Pictured: Anarchy)
  5. Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lipgloss (review) is my go-to formula for sparkling, shimmery gloss with a high-shine, high-shimmer finish. I love shades like Canary, Naked Plum, and Plum Gold. (Pictured: Citrus)
  6. Too Faced La Creme (review) is an excellent formula if you love a lipstick with a very creamy, emollient texture, good color payoff, and hydration. (Pictured: Bon Bon)
  7. Givenchy Le Rouge (review) is one of my favorite formulas for its satiny finish, intense color payoff, and comfortable, hydrating, long-wear.
  8. Buxom Full Bodied Lipstick (review) is a richly pigmented, longer-wearing, comfortable formula that won’t break the bank! (Pictured: Menace)
  9. Marc Jacobs LoveMarc Lip Gel (review) is hydrating, emollient lipstick with a lot of shine and pigmentation. Some of my favorites are Showstopper and Seduce Me. (Pictured: Seduce Me)

Some say a good red lip color is hard to find, but I feel like I fall in love with a new red lip color at least once a month! In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, here are ten of my favorite (permanently available!) red lipsticks and lipglosses… What’s your favorite?

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

2013 was good year for lipsticks, particularly if you loved yours bold, bright, and/or matte. There were new formulas to fall in love with, and plenty of new and limited shades released from my favorite formulas. This was a tough list to compile! Because I really do believe variety is the spice of life, I tried to pick across a variety of formulas!

What lipsticks did you fall in love with this past year?

Saturday, December 7th, 2013

Reader Rashmi requested a top five of burgundy lipsticks, and I have to say, finding a really lovely burgundy lip color that’s permanent is difficult. It seems to be a favorite hue to go-to for limited edition collections, though.

  1. OCC Black Dahlia — is a deep, dark burgundy with a hint of brown that lasts and lasts
  2. MAC Endless Drama — a deepened, semi-opaque burgundy red with a soft, frosted finish
  3. Giorgio Armani #408 — is a muted, reddish burgundy with a pearly shimmer
  4. Buxom Menace — a brightened, berry-ish burgundy with a shimmery finish
  5. Laura Mercier Merlot — a lightened, muted berry-burgundy with a natural finish

What’s your favorite burgundy lipstick?

Buxom Serial Kisser Set
Buxom Serial Kisser Set

Buxom Serial Kisser Set ($32.00 for 5 x 0.04 oz.) includes five shades of miniature-sized Full-Bodied Lipsticks. Two of the five shades are part of the permanent range, while three are limited to this set (as far as I know). A full-sized lipstick contains 0.13 oz. of product and retails for $21. The set is pretty much a value of $32 in lipstick, but the benefit is you get five shades instead of one and a half–so for less the price of two individual shades, you get five to play with. I like the idea of variety, as most of us don’t know what it’s like to finish a lipstick (at least not very often!). After trying these, one thing I didn’t love was how skinny the actual lipstick was, as it made application not as easy as when it’s using the full-sized bullet. They’re just really long and skinny, and I was worried they would break, but none of them did after using them, so at least that went okay! The formula is consistent with the permanent range.

Menace is described as a “rich wine.” It’s a rich, brightened berry-red with cool undertones and very fine ruby red shimmer. It had mostly opaque color with a barely-there translucency that kept it looking more lightweight in comparison to other shades in this formula. The finish was still glossy and luminous, though. It wore well for six hours, and it left behind a berry-ish stain. When I wore it, the formula of Menace was somewhat hydrating. Guerlain Gigolo is a bit darker. Guerlain Orgueil is similar. Giorgio Armani #408 is more muted. Burberry Bright Plum is similar. See comparison swatches.

Provocateur is described as a “true red.” It’s a bold, brightened, medium red with very subtle pink undertones and that leans slightly blue. When I swatch it, I see slight blue undertones, but when applied–against my skin tone–it looks slightly warm-toned. It was opaque and wore for six and a half hours. Urban Decay F-Bomb is warmer. Edward Bess Eternal Passion is slightly muted. MAC Ronnie Red is bluer. Guerlain Garconne is darker. Dior Diorling is darker, more matte. Buxom Scoundrel is cooler-toned. Make Up For Ever #43 is more matte. See comparison swatches.

Mistress is a slightly warm-toned, medium pink with a luminous sheen. It had rich, opaque color payoff and wore well for just over four hours. This shade was nicely hydrating and applied evenly and smoothly. MAC Hoop (DC, $15.00) is more matte. MAC Viva Glam Nicki (LE, $15.00) is brighter. See comparison swatches.

Centerfold is a pinky-mauve with neutral-to-cool undertones and a luminous sheen. It applied with mostly opaque color coverage, and the consistency seemed a bit more emollient with more slip compared to the other shades. It lasted four hours on me, which is about average, while being incredibly moisturizing. MAC Plumful (P, $15.00) is darker. Guerlain Rendez-vous (LE, $35.00) is shimmery. Chanel Paradis (P, $34.00) is shimmery. Bobbi Brown Wild Rose (LE, $24.00) is darker. Too Faced Razzle Dazzle Rose (P, $21.00) is slightly lighter. See comparison swatches.

Moonlighter is a fuchsia-shimmered, cool-toned berry with a pearly shimmer. It was semi-opaque, but it had a noticeable translucency, and in that sense, it was similar to Menace. It wore well for five hours, and then it had a stain that lingered for another hour or so. Revlon Plum Velour (P, $7.99) is not quite as shimmery. Urban Decay Venom (P, $22.00) is richer. Tom Ford Beauty Violet Fatale (P, $49.00) is purpler. MAC Rebel (P, $15.00) is less shimmery. NARS Valparaiso (P, $26.00) is more matte. See comparison swatches.
