5 Shades of Rose Quartz

Not one but two shades were selected as “Color of the Year” by Pantone for 2016. Their decision of choosing two hues, a pastel blue and pink, commonly associated as gender-specific colors, was explained as, “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.” That’s what I like to hear! Here are five existing shades that line-up with the concept of Rose Quartz, which is a “warmer embracing rose tone.”

  1. Buxom Feather Boa — A Warm Pink with a Matte finish.
  2. NYX French Kiss — A Warm Pink with a Natural finish.
  3. Estee Lauder Desirable — A Warm Pink with a Natural finish.
  4. Zoya Rue — A Neutral Pink with a Cream finish.
  5. Inglot #356 — A Warm Pink with a Matte finish.

BUXOM Pink Coquette, Ultraviolet, Voodoo Spice Bold Gel Lipsticks

BUXOM Pink Coquette Bold Gel Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 o z.) is described as a “satin bright warm pink.” It’s a light-medium, yellow-toned pink with a creamy, glossy finish. It had mostly opaque color payoff with a creamy, emollient texture that had a moderate amount of slip. The formula was moisturizing and comfortable to wear, but it only lasted for four hours with minor settling into lip lines. Estee Lauder Impulsive (P, $30.00) is lighter (95% similar). YSL Corail Jalouse (32) (P, $34.00) is glossier (95% similar). Urban Decay Native (P, $22.00) is lighter (90% similar). Revlon Pink Lemonade (P, $7.49) is lighter (85% similar). YSL Nude Beige (1) (P, $34.00) is lighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

BUXOM Coral Confession, Evocative Petal, Graphic Grape Bold Gel Lipsticks

BUXOM Coral Confession Bold Gel Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 o z.) is described as a “satin coral pink.” It’s a light-medium coral with warm undertones and a hint of pink and very fine micro-shimmer. It has a little more shine to it than a true satin finish (to me), but it wears down to satin within an hour or so. This shade had good pigmentation with a lightweight consistency that turns creamy as it heats up against the lips (from the bullet). I did have trouble with the color pulling into lip lines somewhat after two and a half hours of wear, but the creaminess of the formula made it so I could press and rub my lips together to even it back out again. It wore well for four and a half hours in total and was lightly hydrating. MAC Razzledazzler (P, $17.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). MAC Modern Wow! (LE, $17.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Bare Peach (23) (P, $50.00) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Naked Coral (21) (P, $50.00) is more shimmery, brighter (90% similar). Bite Beauty Centifolia (LE, $28.00) is brighter, warmer (90% similar). Estee Lauder Eccentric (P, $30.00) is lighter, brighter, cooler (90% similar). bareMinerals Express Yourself (LE, $20.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). MAC A Sprinkle of Magic (LE, $17.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). NARS Brigitte (P, $32.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Colour Pop Chella (LE, $5.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (85% similar). Laura Mercier Pink Grapefruit (P, $25.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier (85% similar). Buxom Two-Timer (P, $21.00) is darker, glossier (85% similar). MAC Style Surge (P, $22.00) is warmer (85% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Understudy (114) (DC, $30.00) is warmer (80% similar). NARS Juliette (P, $32.00) is darker, brighter (80% similar). MAC Dreaming Dahlia (LE, $17.00) is darker, brighter, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

BUXOM Eyeshadows
BUXOM Eyeshadows

BUXOM Room Service Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as an “iridescent mint.” It’s a brightened, light-medium aqua green with a warm, golden sheen that gives it a more metallic finish overall. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that ran a smidgen dry in the pan but didn’t appear that way on the lid. The color started to fade after eight hours of wear on me. Chanel Promesse #4 (LE) is less shimmery (95% similar). Lancome Fashion Forward (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, cooler (95% similar). Dior Blue Lagoon (374) Eyeshadow #5 (LE) is more muted (90% similar). Dior Dulcinee #2 (LE) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Zestful (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). theBalm #36 (P, $6.50) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Make Up For Ever #53 (LE, $23.00) is darker (85% similar). NARS Tarvos (P, $29.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

BUXOM No Faux Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as an “iridescent snakeskin.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark reddish brown with green-teal shimmer, so it has a multi-faceted appearance and flashes cooler, greener and then warmer and redder. I felt like the duochrome effect was particularly noticeable with this one, even on the lid, without having to contort yourself into weird positions. The texture was really dense and “thick,” even though it is a powder, and it applied well on the skin with smooth, even color that was easily blended out. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading on me. Urban Decay Lounge (P, $18.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Makeup Geek Insomnia (P, $12.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Ardency Inn Peacock (P, $21.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). MAC I've Got a Crush on You (LE, $32.50) is more shimmery, cooler (95% similar). Too Faced Girly (LE, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Natasha Denona Calypso Blue (05M) (P) is cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

BUXOM Cool Caviar Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering gunmetal.” It’s a dark, charcoal gray with a subtle, cool undertone and a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, fairly blendable and easy to use texture–but it was just a smidgen dry–that lasted for eight hours on me. Laura Mercier Gunmetal (LE, $23.00) is darker (95% similar). Make Up For Ever ME108 Steel (P, $21.00) is warmer (95% similar). Chanel Tisse Smoky #3 (P) is lighter (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Enigma #2 (P) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). NARS Jardin Perdu (Left) (LE, $25.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Bao Bao's Jewels #5 (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). bareMinerals Abracadabra (LE) is lighter (90% similar). theBalm Surf's Up (LE, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Dior Blue Garden #5 (LE) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (85% similar). Stila Black Diamond (P) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Chanel Fleur de Pierre (106) (P, $32.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

BUXOM Diamond Darling Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering frost.” It’s a brightened, light beige with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a dense, buttery consistency that adhered really well to bare skin. The color blended out without issue, and it wore for eight hours before it started to fade. LORAC Dream Girl #9 (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Smoky Black Friday #1 (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). Dior Jardin #2 (P) is less shimmery (95% similar). BUXOM Spoiled Sexy Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “matte deep mauve.” It’s a muted, medium-dark mauve with warm, brown undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer color coverage, which was likely the result of it being incredibly powdery and prone to sheering out–so little of it stuck to bare skin. This is a shade that absolutely needs some sort of primer to help it adhere to the lid. What little of it I could see on the skin seemed to stay on all right for seven hours. LORAC Pink Mauve (P) is warmer (95% similar). Hourglass Monochrome #4 (P) is cooler (95% similar). Viseart Cool Matte #2 (P) is more shimmery (95% similar). LORAC Pink Mauve (P) is warmer (95% similar). Too Faced Almond Truffle (P, $16.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Quarry (P, $16.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Anastasia Dusty Rose (LE, $12.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tarte Eco-chic (LE) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Make Up For Ever M546 Dark Purple Taupe (P, $21.00) is cooler (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

BUXOM IT Crowd Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “glimmering cayenne.” It’s a bold, medium-dark orange with warm undertones and a dusting of gold shimmer over a matte finish. It had rich color payoff with a soft, blendable consistency that didn’t sheer out too readily, but I noticed it was thinner and didn’t play as well with some of the denser frosts from the range. The color lasted for eight hours on me. Inglot #123R Middle (P, $6.00) is lighter (95% similar). Sugarpill Flamepoint (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, lighter, brighter (95% similar). Inglot #123R Bottom (P, $6.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Red Brick (P, $16.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). Kat Von D Mandala (LE) is darker (90% similar). MAC Farasha (LE, $16.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). NARS Persia (P, $25.00) is darker (90% similar). Viseart Dark Matte #8 (P) is lighter, more muted (85% similar). MAC Well-Behaved (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (85% similar). Disney by Sephora Rajah (LE) is more shimmery, lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

BUXOM Party Girl Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “fuchsia luster.” It’s a medium-dark, fuchsia pink with cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had decent pigmentation, but I found it really hard to blend out on the lid, and it had a tendency to stick where it applied and not wanting to diffuse. It lasted for eight hours before I saw fading, but I would use this one over a primer. Fyrinnae Superstar (P, $6.80) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Backlash (LE, $18.00) is lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Noise (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker, more muted (95% similar). Sleek MakeUP Acid #1 (P, $9.99) is more shimmery, darker, brighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

BUXOM VIP Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “sparkling orchid.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark purple with warm, pink undertones and a matte finish. It was incredibly powdery and dry, which yielded sheerer, uneven color coverage and made it difficult to blend as it got all over the place. It lasted for six hours before it had faded noticeably. Kat Von D Anthem (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). NARS Fashion Rebel #2 (LE, $25.00) is warmer (95% similar). Bobbi Brown Ultra Violet (LE, $21.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Inglot #386 (P, $6.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Makeup Geek Carnival (P, $6.00) is lighter, more muted (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

BUXOM Feather Boa Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “matte pastel pink.” It’s a light-medium, yellow-toned pink with a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, silky consistency that ran a little powdery but applied well to bare skin and only sheered out slightly when blended. The color lasted for seven and a half hours on me. MAC The Wrong Man (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Lover #4 (LE) is lighter (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Enigma #5 (P) is lighter (90% similar). Too Faced Too-Too (LE, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Flock & Roll (LE, $16.00) is darker (90% similar). bareMinerals Fortune (LE) is warmer (90% similar). LORAC Sorbet (LE) is darker, more muted (85% similar). Inglot #359 (P, $6.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA SUMMARY | BUXOM Eyeshadow ($12.00 each or $40 for six) is a new formula that is available as a customizable palette system, where you can purchase a single shade and an individual compact for $13 or purchase a six-pan palette, plus six eyeshadows to go inside of it, for $40. Each eyeshadow is held inside a metal pan that is (presumably) glued into a plastic pan that snaps into the compact/palette. The eyeshadows are easily lifted in and out of the palette, so you can rearrange them or create a new combination if you have more than one set of six. They will fit into a Z-palette, but you’ll need to add a magnet to keep it in place. The eyeshadow formula is one that works better in action than swatched, as several of the mattes seemed on the thinner, more powdery side, but then they would blend exceptionally well while adhering to bare skin–and they wouldn’t fade any faster than the more shimmery eyeshadows. The more shimmery shades tended to outperform the matte shades with better color payoff. These eyeshadows seem to have a slightly firmer press to them (more in the style of your average MAC eyeshadow), and they feel quite different compared to bareMinerals’ Ready line, as those have a thicker, denser consistency.
