Wet 'n' Wild Mythicool Creatures Color Icon Eyeshadow Quad Review & Swatches
Mythicool Creatures
Wet ‘n’ Wild Mythicool Creatures Color Icon Eyeshadow Quad ($2.99 for 0.16 oz.) is a disappointing number from the brand when I know they can do better. The matte brown was decent, but the other three shades went from so-so to total failure. I stopped reviewing Wet ‘n’ Wild for awhile due to major inconsistencies in their eyeshadows–it just got to the point where there were so few winners that it didn’t make tracking them down worth the effort (thankfully, they are more accessible online now, so that saves some effort!).

Mythicool Creatures
LELimited Edition. $2.99.
Mythicool Creatures #1
Mythicool Creatures #1 is a soft brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color payoff with a soft, moderately powdery texture that applied better than expected, as the color adhered evenly and didn’t sheer out too much, though there was slight fallout when I blended out the shade on my lid. It wore well for seven hours on me before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to be "powerfully pigmented" with a "butter-soft" texture that "glides on like a dream." The majority of the eyeshadows are on the drier side, sometimes feeling loosely pressed and other times more chalk-like and truly dry to the point where a primer became a must for getting good adhesion and wear out of the formula. Most of the matte shades were quite pigmented, and I found they actually applied better to bare skin than some of the shimmers, which often appeared faded and muted in practice compared to how they appeared in the pan. The pigmentation varied from decent to mostly opaque depending on the shade, and the wear was typically between five and seven hours on me.
I did not keep most of the previously-released trios and palettes from the brand as mine, but when I compared 2018's formula to the prior one (and mine are likely five or more years old), the previous formula was far better for their shimmers--slightly more slip, creamier in feel, and typically more pigmented and true-to-color on the lid. I think the mattes, overall, are improved as they are more blendable and pigmented on the lid.

Mythicool Creatures #1
LELimited Edition.
Mythicool Creatures #2
Mythicool Creatures #2 is a soft beige with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation that applied evenly to bare skin, but the texture was drier and dustier, which resulted in the product sheering out too easily on my skin (without a primer to help it adhere better). It stayed on well for six and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Mythicool Creatures #2
LELimited Edition.
Mythicool Creatures #3
Mythicool Creatures #3 is a blackened navy blue with cool undertones and a satiny sheen. It had a firmer, stiffer consistency that was difficult to work with, which resulted in semi-sheer coverage that applied unevenly. I struggled to diffuse and blend out the shade, but I was able to build up the intensity with three to four layers packed on. It lasted for seven hours on me before it started to fade on me.

Mythicool Creatures #3
LELimited Edition.
Mythicool Creatures #4
Mythicool Creatures #4 is a medium purple with warm undertones and a sparkling finish–or at least, that’s what it appears it wants to be. It had such a stiff texture that even when I tried to scrape away layers to get it show up visibly in a skin swatch, I had a smattering of sparkle and not much else. I couldn’t get it to work well on my lid, regardless of whether I used it over primer, with a dampened brush, or fingertips. When I tried to apply this to my lid with a dry brush, I couldn’t get anything to stick so there was no wear to test for.

Aw, I don’t like when WnW gets low marks, but I can certainly see why. Swatches #3 and #4 look nothing like they do in the pan, and #4 is just ridiculous. Oh well. Don’t they test these things?
Too bad that my phone’s keyboard doesn’t avail me the face palm emoji, as this x’s 5 would be my most appropriate and heartfelt response to this ultra subpar quad. Oh well, this could work, too: ?
With #4, I found that if I rubbed off the top layer, I could use a sponge applicator to really pack it on and get a nice color. Lot of work though! #3 just needed a slightly heavier hand with mine.
Same thing here! Except I very lightly rubbed it with 600 grit sandpaper. After that, a sponge applicator made it look like a liquid chestnut/lavender duochrome, and I didn’t have to try very hard (this is over moisturized skin — I would think foundation would do the same; it probably wouldn’t deposit as well over dry skin or powder). It felt “sealed,” and I think it would go back to that state with the addition of skin oils (mine has an almost oily/waxy feel to it).
My #3 worked perfectly with a sponge tip as well (very deep and very pigmented) without a heavy hand, but brushes were a complete failure with this quad. Same comment here about moisturized skin/foundation/powder/etc.
Oh, dear. This came in the box set I got, but I haven’t tried this quad yet. 🙁
This could have been an amazing palette I feel. To bad the formula isn’t good. Why even release this is it’s not up to par? I hope they can redo this one!
That is disgraceful from the brand to release shades like the navy blue and the purple. It makes you lose faith in them.
This reflects my experience with Stop Ruffling My Feathers (the neutral-ish quad) from the hummingbird collection. The shimmers mushed down into hard pan from the first swatch and I’ve never been able to get pigment from them. It’s a shame – Dragon Scales is a legitimately good-to-great little palette so WnW can knock one out when they have to.
I could write a whole thesis on my theory that warmer-toned pigments lend themselves to easier cosmetic formulations, and now i’m wondering why WnW bothered with a bold purple at all if they weren’t going to make sure it was excellent. We all know purples are tough. But why make a bad one?
Way back in the dim and distant past, WnW had a purple 6 pan called “Lust” (they had a deadly sins theme then – Jealousy, Lust, Vanity) and it was first rate so, difficult as purples are, they did manage it…back then.
Yikes I think a 1% score is the lowest I’ve seen here lol
One time, many, many years ago, I received a palette that had plastic eyeshadows in it – I guess it’s like the food commercials, where they make a fake version for photography – and I guess if I had to rate that… 0%. So, it might as well have been plastic 😉
LOL
This should have been fantastic…I mean, just imagine if all the colours performed, what a nice and somewhat different (at least for people like me) palette this would be!
Is that the lowest rating you’ve ever given? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a poorly performing eyeshadow!
Probably!
