Urban Decay x Jean-Michel Basquiat Gold Griot Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches

Urban Decay Gold Griot Jean-Michel Basquiat Eyeshadow Palette

Gold Griot

Urban Decay Gold Griot Eyeshadow Palette ($39.00 for 0.32 oz.) includes eight eyeshadows (0.04 oz. each) in more of a neutral palette–the twist was that most of the shades are warmer in undertone, but then there was a more neutral, medium gray (BK) and a slightly cool-toned black (Pseudonym) thrown into the mix. (For me, the gray was hard to incorporate with the rest!) The majority of the palette was fairly good, though the gray (BK) and light brown (Levitation) shades could have been more pigmented.

Editor’s Note: While Basquiat’s state approached Urban Decay to create the collection, the collection is not without concerns from those who have been drawn in and inspired by Basquiat’s work. Some of the artist’s supporters have expressed concern over the commercialization of the artist’s work (generally) and the lack of a model of color in the collection’s campaign, both said to be inconsistent with some of the themes shown throughout Basquiat’s body of work. A third issue raised is with respect to Urban Decay’s usage of drug-related names (like Junkie, Druggie, Bump, etc.) when Basquiat died of a heroin overdose at 27 years old and how those two can be reconciled. Others who enjoy Basquiat’s work are excited for the collaboration and the acknowledgment of the artist’s influence, along with the possibility of making his work more widely known. As always, we invite thoughtful and critical discussion and debate but ask everyone to be respectful.

Urban Decay Enigma Eyeshadow (Discontinued)

Enigma

Enigma is a soft beige with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a really creamy, smooth consistency that wasn’t too soft or too firm in the pan, which made it blendable and easy to apply without fallout. It had nearly opaque pigmentation and lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.05 oz. - $380.00 Per Ounce

The formula is typically described as "high-pigment" that "stays on your lids" and goes on "seamlessly." Their permanent range has a lot of fantastic shades in it, and many of them are pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. Some of their matte are real workhorse kind of shades with soft, smooth, silky, and blendable textures, while their shimmers and pearly shades are very rich in payoff and apply beautifully to the lid. They wear between seven and nine hours on me, depending on the shade and finish.

Urban Decay Levitation Eyeshadow (Discontinued)

Levitation

Levitation is a soft, very light brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff that applied evenly to the skin, but I found it difficult to build up the color, even over primer, which was a surprise. The texture was thinner and somewhat dusty, which could have explained my results. This shade started to fade after six and a half hours of wear.

Urban Decay Not For Sale Eyeshadow (Discontinued)

Not For Sale

Not For Sale is a muted, medium-dark reddish-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was fantastic–rich, opaque coverage in a single layer–and applied evenly to bare skin. The eyeshadow blended like a dream with minimal effort and didn’t start to fade until after eight hours of wear.

Urban Decay Suckerpunch Eyeshadow (Discontinued)

Suckerpunch

Suckerpunch is a dark, chocolaty brown with warmer undertones and flecks of fine, gold pearl. It had good pigmentation, but it wasn’t quite opaque without two layers, though it was buildable and did perform better over a primer. The consistency was soft, a touch dusty, but blendable and fairly easy to work with. The color wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Urban Decay Influence Eyeshadow (Discontinued)

Influence

Influence is a rich, dark bronze with warm, reddish undertones and a pearly sheen. The color payoff was opaque, while the texture was smooth, creamy, and so easy to blend and diffuse. It was the best shade in the palette. On me, the eyeshadow stayed on well for eight hours before fading.

Urban Decay BK Eyeshadow (Discontinued)

BK

BK is a soft, medium gray with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin finish. It had medium, buildable color coverage but was more semi-opaque when applied over an eyeshadow primer. The consistency was finely-milled but slightly dusty, which made it more prone to sheering out. It applied evenly and blended out without difficulty. This shade lasted for seven hours on me.

Urban Decay Pseudonym Eyeshadow (Discontinued)

Pseudonym

Pseudonym is a blackened blue with cool undertones and violet pearl over a matte finish. The shimmer wasn’t noticeable on the lid for the most part, and it worked like a brighter, black eyeshadow on the lid. The texture was smooth, finely-milled, and slightly dusty in the pan but had little fallout on the lid (even when packed on). It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which was buildable. The eyeshadow started to fade on me after eight hours of wear.

Urban Decay Crown Eyeshadow (Discontinued)

Crown

Crown is a medium, yellow gold with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had excellent pigmentation that applied fairly evenly to bare skin. The consistency was soft, though it felt like it could have been more firmly pressed in the pan, and blendable on the eye. This shade wore well for eight hours on me.

The new palettes start to look recycle after owning the earlier versions…good thing you review them all….so i don’t even need to go to the store to swatch. It is like shopping for a new date.

Patiently waiting for you to review other brands like a Vulgar Cosmetics.

Mariella Avatar

The shades I like best in this – BK, Suckerpunch and Influencer – you guessed it – I’ve dupes of them all. Still this looks like a good palette and the art-work makes it even more desirable. As always, a lovely eye look (though I still struggle with orange so would play that down or use another colour in the crease).

What Mum Loves Avatar

hmm I dont really know what to say about this palette- colours are gorgeous but they are euther very cool-toned or very warm-toned. I think that whoever gets it, wont use half of the shades.
But your review is, as always, so professional! x

SaffyTaffy Avatar

As a scholar of the artist, I think he would have been tickled by this. I wasn’t able to get my hands on the vault- it sold out nearly the moment it went on sale.
It’s been heartbreaking to see people who don’t even know who he was (making fun of the ‘ugly’ art or confusing him with a shoe designer) bragging about getting the full vault.

SaffyTaffy Avatar

This might sound spoiled, but honestly I only wanted the vault. I’ve got my Naked palette, so I don’t need the Gold Griot. I’ve got Pastel Goth, so I don’t need Tenant. The blush and lipsticks are made for WoC and would be wasted on me, and I don’t use sharpenable eyeliners. I would have loved the makeup bags, but those are sold out, too. *shrugs*

Actually, that’s worth reiterating: the colors are WoC-appropriate. That’s major. That, to me, says more than the model they used.

Maddie Avatar

As much as I love Basquiat’s art and how great this packaging is, I passed on this collection because of most of the reasons listed above.

On the other hand, I love the idea of makeup reflecting art (and palettes themed around famous pieces/artists), and would love to see other collections like this, but that stay true to and respectful of the artist’s perspective.

Carolyn Avatar

Agreed. That’s why I’ve been able to support the NARS concepts with Andy Warhol (who, let’s face it, pretty much sold anything he could), but not these Basquiat pieces.

BonnieBBon Avatar

But Basquiat worked with Warhol. They had a productive relationship and Basquiat was also sort of the vanguard of art being shown on MTV back when MTV started and his art was everywhere in the channel. It was very much a celebration of pop culture and the moment. I don’t understand why people think he would hate it so much. The Warhol collab kind of shuts down the commercialism argument. But I’m just a long time fan, what do I know compared to everyone on the internet that suddenly literally loves him and totally thinks he would have hated this…….btw whomever my comment ends up under this isn’t directed at you! I always seem to hit the wrong reply button but I’m actually not even writing this to debate with anyone. Just some food for thought.

Genevieve Avatar

A very pretty and colourful palette – a tribute to the artist. And yes, it is a shame that a woman of colour has not been employed to advertise this palette.
UD also need to re think their policy around the subject of name choices for their products. They upset and alienate many.

Bonnie Avatar

I always love reading your editors notes that draw attention to important topics and give us food for thought Christine.. I think it’s great that you bring awareness to these sensitive issues.

Karina Avatar

I bought this online and after seeing it in the store I’m glad I did. I don’t have anything with this color palette and there’s a hanger spot on the back of it to display it on the wall as art when the palette is finished. So, I consider my money well spent 🙂

tinzac Avatar

Me too! I was worried it would be like too many of the browns in my other UD palettes, but it doesn’t look like it (except maybe crown being similar to goldmine). I’m glad that the Not For Sale is similar to Extra Bitter, since I don’t have that palette, and that was the only color I liked in that naked palette ;). One complaint though, what’s with all the black/blackish eyeshadow? You pretty much have something like it in every palette, save the space to give us something novel.

MoMerrell Avatar

While I understand the community’s dislike with UD’s BAD naming practices I think the fact that Basquiat estate going to them about this proves that they were not bothered by it and shouldn’t be. UD’s collaborations are always creative. The quality of the product may not be the best but I’ve loved viewing collaborations because I think they are one of the only brands that when they collaborate, they really go above and beyond on the production of the product which to me is acceptable. Not many brands can do collabs with anybody but I think UD can – I am sure they are done with the drug inspired naming practices thankfully.

Kimberley Avatar

I just ordered both of the Jean-Michel Basquiat eyeshadow Palettes online. Can’t beat the sale price. I ordered the blush palette when it first came out. I’m planning on putting all of them on my wall. I’ll probably depot them first.

Christine I loved your eye looks for both Palettes! Can’t wait to try them out.
