Urban Decay Vice Eyeshadow Palette
Urban Decay Vice Eyeshadow Palette

Variety is the Spice of Vice

This post takes a look at the second half of Urban Decay Vice Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.60 oz.), which includes: Provocateur (light metallic mauve with multi-dimensional sparkle and shimmer finish), Rapture (dark greyish purple with multi-dimensional shimmer finish), Vice (deep eggplant purple with shimmer finish), Noise (electric punch pink with gold sparkle and shimmer finish), Armor (metallic dove grey with silver micro-glitter shimmer finish), Nevermind (metallic cork with shimmer finish), Echo Beach (pale wheat with shimmer finish), Anonymous (opaque almond with matte finish), Freebird (pink champagne with silver micro-sparkle shimmer finish), and Laced (opaque pinky taupe with matte finish).

Provocateur is a pale pink with a hint of mauve–and super chunky pink and white sparkle. The color payoff is so-so, because it’s very loose; it just kind of falls apart when you apply it, as a result of all the glitter. This one had a lot of fall out both during and after application. Urban Decay Bordello is a bit darker and doesn’t have the sparkle. Urban Decay Midnight Cowboy is a little pinker and lighter. Inglot #399 is slightly darker and pinker. Giorgio Armani #7 is more metallic, no sparkle.

Rapture is a subdued medium-dark purple with subtle burgundy undertones and a frosted finish with slight sparkle. It had decent to good pigmentation, though it had a slightly dry texture. Urban Decay AC?DC is less subdued, more violet. Urban Decay Gravity ism ore purple. Urban Decay Rockstar is a little darker. Bare Escentuals Romp is less purple.

Vice is a medium violet purple with subtle red undertones and soft, frosted finish. It had decent to good pigmentation and applied smoothly. urban Decay Freakshow is just slightly darker. Urban Decay Gravity is more subdued. Urban Decay Delinquent is similar. L’Oreal Perpetual Purple is darker and less red-toned.

Noise is a bright pop of medium pink with subtle blue undertones and a satiny finish. There is faint sparkle, but the sparkle doesn’t seem to translate. It had good color payoff, but it did look brighter in the pan than applied. Milani Shocking Pink is brighter and more blue-based. MAC Tease with Ease is darker. Urban Decay Junkshow is purpler. Urban Decay Woodstock is darker.

Armor is a grayish-brown–taupe–with a soft, frosted finish. It had excellent pigmentation and was fairly smooth. Urban Decay Mushroom is fairly similar, perhaps a touch browner. Make Up For Ever #2 is similar. MAC Keep Your Cool is close but appears darker, as it has a more matte finish.

Nevermind is a light-medium bronzy brown with a frosted, metallic finish. It had nice color payoff and a very soft, smooth texture. Urban Decay Chase is warmer, more golden. Buxom Mutt is less golden. MAC Aloha is more red-toned. Urban Decay Suspect is lighter.

Echo Beach is a pale, muted gold with subtle warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had good color payoff and applied evenly. Urban Decay Maui Wowie is a smidgen darker and has sparkle. Giorgio Armani #1 Madreperla is very similar in color. MAC Retrospeck is similar, perhaps less warm. Urban Decay Blunt is yellower.

Anonymous is a pale ivory with a subtle warmth and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation, and it was soft but not powdery. MAC Brule is a bit more beige. Urban Decay Kinky is less warm. theBalm Adagio is a bit darker. Urban Decay Walk of Shame is pinker. theBalm Matt Smith is a hair darker. Urban Decay Booty Call is a touch more peach-toned and has a soft sheen. MAC Vanilla is similar.

Freebird is a pale pink with yellow undertones and pale gold sparkle along with a metallic finish. This shade was on the sheer side and had some fall out. Bare Escentuals Page Six is slightly darker. Lancom Kitten Heel has a stronger golden sheen. MAC Pink Frontier is less metallic. Urban Decay Scratch is similar.

Laced is a pink-tinged beige with a hint of gray and has a matte finish. It had good color payoff and was soft without being powdery. Inglot #344 is a few shades darker. MAC Bloom On is similar but inferior in payoff.

Out of these shades, the most unique was Laced.  The other nine were actually, more or less, common enough that they didn’t feel hard to duplicate.  Provocateur, Rapture, Vice, Noise, Armor, Anonymous, and Freebird all had very comparable dupes. It doesn’t take away from the quality or rating of the palette at all, but it’s something to take into consideration if you already own a few of Urban Decay’s past palettes.

I didn’t like Provocateur or Freebird, as they were both very sparkly and sheer. It was hard to build up the color, and there was a lot of fall out during and after application, which made both shades frustrating to wear.  Armor, Nevermind, and Echo Beach were the best performers out of the ten, as they were rich in pigmentation and smooth and even to work with.

I’m still working through the shades for wear, so this most might be updated later this afternoon if I find the wear deviates from my past experience with the new Urban Decay formula.  So far, I have only fully tested Echo Beach, Nevermind, Jagged, and Anonymous, which wore for eight hours without fading or creasing (tested over primer and over bare lids with the same results).

Noise and Armor are definitely my favourites! Would you pick this palette over the Smoked palette? Also, will you be reviewing the new Calvin Klein make-up line? The packaging of the line looks pretty unique! 🙂

Quinctia Avatar

A couple of the really sparkly shades in this seem like they might be closer to the Stardust formula than the regular one.

Since these are all new shades, I doubt I’ll be able to resist picking this one up. I hardly wear any other brand of shadows but UD, so I feel less badly about collecting them like Pokemon?

Julie Avatar

Thank you so much for posting this in such good time! Your reviews really help me to decide whether I want to spend money on a product or not. I have been excited about this palette for a bit, and will definitely be getting this one! Especially since I only own the Naked Palettes and no good color palettes.

Catherine Avatar

I was expecting more matte shades from the original promo photos. I agree, Laced is unique and I like it. I also like Nevermind and Echo Beach, but I can pretty much dupe all the shades in this palette with ones I already own (except maybe a few of the super bright shades that I probably wouldn’t get much use from anyway)

Roberta Avatar

Christine, I think you just saved me some money! Thank you! It’s only cause I already own 3 palettes and created my own but this was so tempting lol

Megan Avatar

Wow. Your reviews are excellent. I was really hoping freebird and provocateur would have better results, as the shades themselves are very pretty. 🙁 I hope Echo Beach and Penny Lane will be released either individually or in a different palette int he future.

Ani_BEE Avatar

Your Blitz, Junkie, Chaos, Echo Beach, Anonymous Eyeshadows look is up my alley.;)

I thank you for the dupes as I actually have a lot of them from theBalm,Inglot and MAC. Also plan to get that Sugarpill palette in the future that’s has a dupe for Chaos.

This is a pass for me but it really has a great range for shades.

Brittani Avatar

Do you have a chart that compares the words you use to describe color payoff for example is “decent” better than “good” or “nice” or “excellent.” It would be really nice if you had a chart that showed the words you use and which is better than the other, but then you might be relegated to using specific words over and over again. Though when talking about color payoff that might not be such a bad idea….just a thought.

Andrea Avatar

Hi Christine. Thank you for your review. How does Chaos compare to MAC Atlantic Blue? It looks the same from pictures so I was surprised you didn’t list it as a dupe!

Zabby Avatar

I was very interested in this at first, but that feeling is waning now. Especially with the mention of “super chunky sparkles”.
Laced does look really interesting, but its not enough to justify purchasing the whole pallet. Awesome packaging though.
Looks like I can save my pennies for something better.
I appreciated the review 🙂

Kafka Avatar

Huh. It’s interesting that Laced is so unique. Soft pink-beiged mattes would seem a dime a dozen and I was sure I had seen something like this from NARS. The Douce France Trio seemed the most likely and, yes, one shade is close but it’s shimmery, not matte. NARS’ All about Eve Duo seemed like another good shot but, again, not matte. I find it hard to believe that MAC has nothing similar amidst their vast array of colours. Bobbi Brown no doubt must have one as she’s the queen of neutrals and this sort of shade. Or Burberry. A colour like this is totally Burberry, no?!

Huh, now I’m genuinely curious as to whether any other makeup company has a dupe. You wouldn’t think a matte pale beige with pink would be so rare!

As for the rest of the eyeshadows, I think I preferred the colours in Part I. But Vice & Armor are pretty! I thought Armor would be greyer though. (Drats.) As a whole, I think if this palette were less frosty/shimmery and more matte, I would be all over it. Right now, I keep veering back and forth between “Meh” and “Undecided But Somewhat Tempted.”

Veronica Avatar

You would think it more common, but I spent two months trying to hunt down a beige pink shade and couldn’t find one anywhere In the end, I wound up settling for a pale, cool-toned pink that went on light enough to appear slightly beige on my complexion. You can find it very occasionally in palettes – Too Faced’s Natural Eye palette has one, if I recall – but it’s nearly impossible to find it as a single.

Wwendalynne Avatar

When I looked at this colour, I immediately thought of Blink from Illamasqua which is in the Empower palette. So I hauled it out and nope, it’s more beige than pink. I also pulled Paula Dorf Serenity, but it is a warmer and darker pink brown. I do not have a dupe for this shade either.. crap! *music of doom*…

Fiaspice Avatar

Thanks for the review, before iy, I would probably got it. But seeing there is only 2 shades I like and are not similar to what I own, I’ll pass.

Wwendalynne Avatar

Yes! I love look #2!! I have a lot of shadows which are quite close to a number of these, particularly the neutrals. I love the brights such as Chaos, although it puts me in mind of the blue from Sugarpill Heartbreaker and NARS Outremer; both I have. But then I stumble onto the swatches of rapture, vice, junkie, unhinged and even the grey/brown desperation, and I think I’ve got to have this palette!! Christine, how similar are the shades in the Fun palette to the brights in this palette? Just at a cursory overall level?

Kafka Avatar

I thought the same thing about the Fun palette, Wendy. In fact, it is what’s muddles my decision-making process. This definitely has shades to closely replicate that great look Christine did with the Fun palette. So, should I just get that instead? This is a better deal but only if I like more of the shades which… I do and I don’t. Plus, the Fun palette has that gorgeous Freakshow shade! Every time I think I should just get Fun, something about the Vice palette tempts me. (And do NOT say I should get both! Or, rather, all 3 given that I also really want the Dangerous one too!) Arrrggh. Decisions, decisions. lol

stacey Avatar

Got this one without touching it. Usually I get it at Macys but I got a $5.00 discount…not much but did not want UD to run out and I can get it when my coupon expires this month.

I like glitter galore…Bombs away…I have Fyrinnae’s Pixy Epoxy to help me..

Jessica Avatar

Do you have the dimensions for the box? I’m on the fence about this, but I think if it fits in my train case I will bite…. Not that I need it, I already have both nakeds, the 15th anniversary, and the black palettes…

Alys Avatar

Thanks for posting the swatches. This palette looked SO tempting until I realized that I can more or less dupe the entire thing (or at least the shades I’d wear often, anyways) with stuff I already own (mostly previous UD releases, actually)

Jasmine Avatar

Oh goodness. Christine, you’re going to make me want to buy yet another UD palette after seeing your neutral look (I’m a sucker for neutrals). Those colors and the color combination look great on you!

Ahwish Avatar

Hi Christine,

Would this palette be available on Beauty.com? I am unable to purchase from Urban Decay.com because they do not accept international issued credit card.

Hala Avatar

Not sure if this is relevant anymore, but just in case others are looking at this (or for your info), I had contacted UD about international credit cards (since I wanted to buy something as a present for my sister in the US but don’t have US credit card myself) and here is what they had to say (even though their website says they do not accept international credit cards) 🙂

Thank you for your email. We do accept international credit cards, however, sometimes our system does not allow you to input an international billing address. If this happens, just submit the same US shipping address for the billing address to submit your order. Our system will identify that the billing address is incorrect and we will contact you to update it manually. If you have any further questions feel free to write back.

Love some of these colors (provocateur, rapture, nevermind, echo beach, & anonymous. However, am looking to purchase a few finely milled, satin or pearl, similar dupes, but from brands such a Burberry, Cle de pleau, or Chanel’s Prelude Quad. Know these are luxary brands, but at 53 years who works in a more conservative professional setting, I’m more interested in finding a few shadows that compliment my fair-medium, warm skinned complexion. Any suggestions for a soft yellow gold, nude (like Trench), light gray or silver, blonde taupe, warm beige, rich mauve (Cle de Pleau#107?), golden taupe,& blue-gray-purple? Have spent too much $$ on hi-end brands only to find poor color pay-off, fall-out…well, applying make-up should be both an art & fun (plus, I LOVE looking at beautiful colors!). But chunky metallic no longer works for me. I want both beautiful, rich colors, but ease of application that ultimately brighten my aging eyes that yearn for silkiness. Any words of wisdom? I live far from an urban area but am ready to shop!:+)

sudeki Avatar

I got this 2 days ago, BIG disappointment.
To me most of the shades is so close to the shades i already own, i mean you really can’t see the difference once apply to eyelid. only 3 to 4 shades is unique to my exist collection…
the ONLY thing really good is, packaging much much inproved from BOS and i can carry everywhere, which is much much prefered.
i still struggling whether to keep or return for just 3 to 4 shades, i seriously think urban decay should develop their build your own palette instead of this!

Jae Avatar

Thanks for the review, Christine!! I passed on the Fun/Fem/Dangerous palettes and the anniversary one, but I think I’m going to grab this!! As you stated, it has a good amount of brights and neutrals and I like that I can get a variety of looks if I travel with just this palette!! Loooove the looks you’ve included too!!! =) And thanks to you, I’ve bought just about every one of Tarina Tarantino’s eyeliners!! Loooove them!

HeavenGlam Avatar

I got this palette today at Sephora (a day early!) and I am very happy with it. I understand that the shades are similar to existing UD shades but I don’t have many UD shadows so that’s fine with me! 🙂 I also like the Good Karma brush, so that was a plus! I haven’t used it yet but I’m excited!

Valeree Avatar

i’ve had this palette for couple weeks and i still haven’t really tried it – i think i am going to just return this since i do have the deluxe palette with all the “bright” colors that i like. thank you so much for this review! always very helpful!

ps – i only have the deluxe palette and both the naked palettes plus the smoked palette. i feel like though the shades here are new, i don’t really need them.

Dheeta Avatar

Help me pleaseeee 🙁 🙁 . I’m looking for the single eyeshadow have the same colour with laced from vice palette. Can you suggest me? That colour its perfect for everyday makeup routine and my skin tone.
