Urban Decay Vice Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches (Part 1)
Urban Decay Vice Eyeshadow Palette
What’s Your #1 Vice?
This post takes a look at the first half of Urban Decay Vice Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.60 oz.), which includes: Desperation (taupe brown with satin finish), Muse (deep sepia brown with multi-dimensional sparkle finish), Jagged (metallic black gold with shimmer finish), Blitz (metallic yellowg old with shimmer finish), Penny Lane (metallic peachy bronze pearl with golden shimmer finish), Junkie (dark green/blue pearl with golden shimmer), Chaos (bright blue matte), Occupy (metallic steel grey with multidimensional sparkle and shimmer finish), Unhinged (metallic electric turquoise with shimmer finish), and Black Market (jet black satin).
Desperation is a brown-tinged medium-dark gray with a soft frosted finish. It had good color payoff, and the texture was finely-milled and applied smoothly. MAC Moody is similar, perhaps a touch darker. Maybelline Tough as Taupe is a smidgen lighter and grayer. MAC Howzat is grayer. MAC Moth Brown is a smidgen more purple. MAC Interior Life is similar but matte. MAC Dynamic Duo 3 is comparable, slightly purple. Urban Decay Mushroom is a bit browner, less gray. Chanel Illusoire is more frosted.
Muse is dark brown with multi-colored sparkle. The color payoff was decent, but it wasn’t fully opaque. It does have noticeable sparkle, which has a tendency to fall out during application. I’ve experienced less fall out with the new formulation during wear, but there is still some. Urban Decay Barlust is more metallic. Urban Decay Busted is very similar–just lacks the sparkle (which might be a good thing!). theBalm Silly is similar in color. theBalm Mahna-Mahna is richer, more red-toned, no sparkle.
Jagged is a sheer, olive-tinted, medium-dark brown with chunky gold and bronze sparkle/glitter. It had really dismal pigmentation–super sheer and very, very gritty. This had a ton of fall out during application, and it was a pain to clean up. It continued to have some fall out post-application. The color applied better with a brush, but it did need to be packed on a bit. This was the worst performing shade out of all 20 shades. It’s hard to dupe this shade, because I can’t quite tell what it’s supposed to be. Bobbi Brown Black Cocoa is darker. Urban Decay Cobra is similar, I’d say–has the olive/brown coloring. theBalm Sophisticated is similar to how it looks applied.
Blitz is a yellow gold with a bright, metallic finish. It had good color payoff, and it applied smoothly overall. Urban Decay Honey is darker, more molten. OCC Acacia is a bit darker. Maybelline Bold Gold is a touch darker. Urban Decay Eldorado is lighter. Make Up For Ever #101 is a bit yellower.
Penny Lane is a warm, light-medium orange with a peachy-gold metallic sheen. It was mostly opaque when swatched and went on smoothly. Milani Gold Dust is a smidgen yellower. Bare Escentuals Golden Iris is very close in color but less metallic. theBalm Mischievous Marissa is similar.
Junkie is a bluish teal with a soft, frosted finish. I know it’s supposed to have gold shimmer, but I really couldn’t see it. MAC Rain Drop is more muted. urban Decay Deep End is a smidgen lighter but very similar. Tarina Tarantino Ozma is a touch lighter. theBalm Open to Offers Olwen is lighter.
Chaos is a rich royal blue with hints of violet and blue micro-shimmer over a matte base. It had excellent color payoff, though it was a touch powdery. Bare Escentuals On the Rocks is purpler. Sugarpill Velocity is a touch bluer. NARS Rated R is bluer and lighter. MAC Cobalt is similar but inferior in quality. Inglot #388 is a bit darker.
Occupy is a dark gray with a bluish cast and silver and blue shimmer and sparkle. It had good color payoff, and it had a bit of sparkle, but it wasn’t too heavy to be particularly problematic. Make Up For Ever #147 is bluer. Revlon Neptune Star has chunkier sparkle. Illamasqua Android is darker and more teal-tinged.
Unhinged is a medium-dark teal with a soft, metallic finish. It had good pigmentation and applied smoothly. Inglot #413 is tealer. theBalm Open to offers Olwen is greener. Maybelline Tenacious Teal is similar when blended out. It’s kind of like a cross between Urban Decay Haight and Dashiki.
Black Market is a brownish-black with a satiny finish. It had good color payoff and applied evenly. MAC Nebula is not quite as dark and has a stronger brown coloring. Bobbi Brown Black Chocolate is darker, matte.
If you have, say, three or four of Urban Decay’s major palette releases, you likely have shades that are somewhat similar to these (not all but some). Of course, if you have this many palettes, you’re also nearing 50+ eyeshadows! There is some overlap, so on that note, the most unique shades were Blitz, Chaos, and Black Market. The shades that have cousins or siblings would be Desperation, Muse, Junkie, and Unhinged.
The only disappointing shade out of this half of the palette was Jagged, which was a sheer, gritty mess of a color. It definitely was better when I used it on the lid, but it was still a pain to work with because of all the fall out during and after application. The majority of the shades had really nice pigmentation, though Chaos was exceptionally lovely, while Muse was a little below the rest (but not as bad as Jagged).
Because I received this palette late in the afternoon, I have only been able to test four shades for wear (Echo Beach, Nevermind, Jagged, and Anonymous). I will be testing more shades today, so this review might be updated should the results fall below what my typical experience with Urban Decay’s eyeshadows is. The four that I tested wore for eight hours without creasing or fading both over bare lids and primer.
It’s packaged in a dark purple, rubberized plastic case with a raised jeweled “UD” on top. The bummer about the logo is that because it’s raised, you can’t easily stack anything on top of this, so it has to be on top or set aside on its own. There’s $216 worth of eyeshadows in here, and the double-ended brush would likely be around $20 or so. It absolutely is a value-packed palette at $59, when you’re getting ~$236 worth of products. For reference, BoS IV was ~$200 value, BoS III was ~$195, 15th Anniversary was ~$255, Naked Palette was ~$230, Naked 2 Palette was ~$234.

meh.
Good comparision with your hand! I’m really tempted to buy this palette. Just a big bummer Jagged isn’t working. I love Desperation, Junkie and Chaos! <3
Though my hands are probably a bit larger than the average woman’s, lol!
Thanks for the review- well the start of it! To be totally honest, I really enjoy ur reviews and always look at ur site before purchasing! The pictures are always true and ur accurate and not biased about the products! Just wanted to say thank you!!! And I can’t wait to get this palette! 🙂
Thank you so much, Edyta! 🙂 That is very humbling!
I feel like Jagged needs a gif reply. Nothing else can express the level of “nope!” I have towards it.
As for the other shades… well, let’s just say I think UD need to stop going back to the same successful shades and slightly altering them. I think most of us have seen these shades or have these shades in several palettes already!
ATM, I think I’ll wait and see if they release Chaos and Black Market separately.
I think they could do some more cross-color shades… like teal with blue shimmer, blue with purple shimmer, etc.
Mmmm things with shimmer.
But I completely agree! A small amount of shimmer would be a relatively simple way of stopping all these shades looking so similar. The other thing they could do is have a more cohesive theme to their palettes. So many of them seem to jump about in intent that overall, the palette loses some appeal (at least to me. If I study this or 15th Anni for too long, I’m left going “But what was the creative direction of this palette overall?”)
Exactly my thought!
Do you think Penny Lane and Flow from the UD 15th anniversary palette are similar at all? Penny Lane seems to be a little darker, but from the picture it looks like they have the same kind of peachy golden tone with a hint of copper, it looks gorgeous. Also, did you find blitz to be extremely metallic or is it a nice level of metallic finish? I know that sounds confusing, what I’m trying to ask is basically, is the finish too metallic to be wearable? Because even though I’m only 22 and don’t have oily or dry eyelids, they’re just normal, overly metallic shades age my eyes like crazy. I can wear shimmer all day, but super metallic colors don’t work for me, I do really love a “glowier” metallic shade, one that has metallic qualities but is more subdued.
Flow is a lot lighter and has less orange in it 🙂
Blitz is pretty metallic!
I was most excited about the shade “Jagged.” It looked like it could be an olive toned blackish brown. Too bad that was the biggest flop! “Junkie” looks great, though.
On a side note, what is your favorite palette that has matte shades (leaning more to the neutral side)?
theBalm’s Matt palette!
Your dupes are really helpful! I was most excited about Desperation, but since I have three of the shades you mentioned (Tough as Taupe, Moth Brown, Mushroom), I clearly have the color family covered!
Happy to help, Emi!
Re. Jagged: “It’s hard to dupe this shade, because I can’t quite tell what it’s supposed to be.” — Ouch! But well-deserved given the way it looked in the swatches vs. the pan. Chaos looks like a complete dupe for NARS Outremer. How do you think they compare? Oh, and what is the deal with the slowly lifting lid? How slow is it?
Outremeber is a bit darker and bluer.
It’s on a hinge, so when you press the button to open it, it slowly releases it. It’s not really SLOW SLOW.
Well, the part about the lid is good news at least. :\ But given these swatches, I’m going to completely pass on this palette. Several things I liked did not turn out as they looked in pan, while others are very dupeable and/or just plain bad. From your swatches, I only really want Occupy & Junkie. GORGEOUS shades but I’m not spending $60 on 2 eyeshadows!
Do you have any Urban Decay palettes? I can’t remember if you do. I feel like if you didn’t love theBalm eyeshadows, you might not like these. They’re not the same, but they have a similar softer, denser texture.
I have a number of UD singles and, also, the Vegan palette. I love the texture of UD’s shadows, though I wish most of them weren’t SO damn shiny or frosted! But at least they show up with intensity, whereas theBalm shades were incredibly muted and faded on me.
The problem is that I was all set to dismiss this palette and then you had to go and post eyeshadow looks! ;P I love the one you did with Blitz, Junkie, Chaos, Echo Beach & Anonymous! I think the matteness of Chaos is what really makes it. And the look you did with Noise, Penny Lane, Unhinged, Vice, Echo Beach, Anonymous makes me think of that amazing one you did with the Fun palette — which just leads me to wonder if I should just get this one instead (esp. as it has so many additional shades) instead.
That blasted crystal gem thing on the top of the lid doesn’t help because I lurve how it looks — sortage inconvenience notwithstanding!
But my gut tells me to leave it and that more matte shades would be better for me. Grrr. I’m all muddled now. LOL! Time for a trip to Macy’s, I think, to check this out in person.
Let us know if seeing it person ends up swaying you 😉
If Chaos is the one really catching your eye, you might want to try out Milani’s Olympian Blue first. It’s a fairly close dupe with the same finish. 🙂
Junkie looks alot like Loaded, IMO (at least on my screen).
On my monitor, Junkie looks very teal, while Loaded (on me) is totally dark forest green with some sort of weird… duochrome (??) or something. But whatever it is, it looks a thousand times darker than Junkie. Oh, can you imagine Occupy next to Loaded??! Hmm…
Occupy is really the only shade that makes this palette worth picking up, at least for me. I’m wondering, though, if any of these will end up being released as singles, as with what happened with the Anniversary palette. Either way, if I end up missing out on this one, I won’t be too disappointed; on the other hand, if I happen to come across it, I may end up picking it up. I’ve nearly finished my list of NARS permanent shadows, so I kind of want to focus on that ATM. BTW, I swatched Thunderball recently, and it (along with Galapagos) made my list.
I love the looks you put together, but especially “Urban Decay Blitz, Junkie, Chaos, Echo Beach, Anonymous”.
“Urban Decay Echo Beach, Nevermind, Jagged, Anonymous” looks really elegant on you.
When I got the palette yesterday I went straight for the blues – Chaos, Junkie, Unhinged. I was reminded of how inglot shadows are powdery with Chaos.
Such a fun collection of colors!
I didn’t realize how unique Black Market was until seeing your swatch. I used it to deepen my crease but haven’t swatched all the shades yet.
I love the rubberizied feeling of the case.
I can’t say enough how much I enjoy seeing how you combine colors. It really inspires me.
Oh no… the two colors that I had my eye on were Penny Lane and Jagged. One of them turned out horrible, hopefully UD releases singles of these!
Will be buying! This is wonderful! 😀
Is this palette available only in the US or Sephora worldwide?
I’m not sure what the international availability will be!
Jagged is so disappointing! When I read the color descriptions in the press release, I was really intrigued by this color and I’m sad to see it turned out to be so crappy! Everything else in this palette looks awesome so I will still be getting it!
I feel like I ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE like, two of these shades. Unfortunately, that makes it really impractical to buy this palette, especially after their sale, which cleaned me out.
I feel like having a superhuge website sale as your announcing your holiday items is a bad business model, Urban Decay. 🙁
so bummed about jagged! but thank you christine, as always, for being so truthful with no agendas! you are amazing at what you do. i purchased this a few hours ago and i think it will be an amazing addition to my naked 2 palette 🙂 are you wearing chaos as a liner on the last photo?? it’s perfect! can’t wait to use chaos, penny lane and occupy 🙂
Tarina Tarantino Cute Robot 🙂
Brrr, what’s wrong with jagged… :-s Otherwise all swatches look good.
This palette does have everything for everyone. Good quality, good bang for the buck. I might bite! Thanks so much for the review. You’re the best!
Christine, you are such a wonderful person for doing dupes as you have. Much as I love the look of this palette, I am realizing that I have at least one and possibly several dupes for each of the shades I really love the look of. It probably won’t stop me buying this palette but it will make the time til it becomes available here a bit more bearable.
Thank you, Mariella! 🙂
I just ordered this a few minutes ago. I was excited before but your reviews are making me more eager to get it. I know it’s early but will you be reviewing the Smoked 24/7 eyeliner set? I’m still on the fence about that one.
Sorry, I do not have anything else from Urban Decay to review – this is all they sent!
I am so bummed about Jagged… that’s one I was really looking forward too.
I’m a little underwhelmed by the Vice Palette. There are some pretty colors but overall I’m not blown away. Some are similar to what they’ve already released and I already have 3 UD palettes. So I guess I can wait for the next big release… *prays for Naked Palette 3*
I really wish that they would bring out a lot of these colors individually. Not enough individual color releases!!
I’m just glad it doesnt have stupid, bulky, gimmicky packaging like some other their other palettes have (though, the slow reveal lid is a little WTF, but I can deal with it). Can’t wait to see the other half of the review, since I feel like I’d wear those colours more. Thanks, Christine!
I’m passing on this. Its too easy to be tempted by palettes, and I havent even *touched* my UD Book of Shadows Vol. 1 palette yet. I would rather make my own palette and fill it with colors that I know I will use. Palettes never work for me because there are so many shades that go to waste! I want to get the UD Build your own palette, the one with 6 slots, and a custom MAC palette.
Super like the looks that you have created with these colors, Christine!!
Thanks, Ca!
Definitely won’t be picking this one up. I’ve found that although Urban Decay shadows swatch beautifully and buttery, they have INSANE amounts of fall out, and don’t last at all on the eyelids. No matter how many times I’ve tried, their shadows end up either completely faded or on my cheeks after a few hours! The glitter fall out is impossible to clean up, and doesn’t stay on the lids at all.
What ever happened to their “new and improved” eyeshadows? Are they just as bad?
Some shades seem improved, others aren’t so much!
Is it only me or does jagged look v gritty?
I think I will be passing on this on. I do love the colors but it seems all UD palettes have some many neutrals, and although they are good most of them are so similar. I have naked 1&2 and do not need any more neutrals. I think I’m past the stage of buying anymore UD palettes. Too similar. I will be buying singles!
I own bs3, 50 anniv. Palette, and the naked palette. Do you think I should buy this one? How many of my shades would be too close? Or are the ones here completely different?
You don’t need this one, but if there are enough shades that appeal to you, then sure 🙂
I am in loooove with Blitz and Penny Lane!
i like it! i don’t know if i will buy it because i already have the 15th anniversary palette, naked 1& naked 2, and the UD loves NYC palette. i haven’t even hit pan on any shadows in those palettes yet, so i don’t know if i will buy this one. it is nice though
I actually really like this palette, but with as much as I own, I’m wavering on whether or not I’d get my full use out of it. Chaos is the shade that catches my eye the most, but I have Milani’s Olympian Blue, which is a very close dupe in both color and finish (and wears just as nicely). Junkie and Occupy are gorgeous, though, and I don’t have anything in my collection similar to them. I’ll have to sit on it a bit.
CHAOS literally hurt my eyes lol
I have all the 3 shady lady palettes from the balm, the nude e tude and UD naked 1. I love the texture of UD, and this palette look so pretty, i can´t make up my mind, did i need it, or did i not.
I think its worth it even if it does have a few duds, I still love it!
you are the best chic:-) thx for the chance to win,:
I love this palette so much!!! I will be buying this but will be waiting a bit until naked basics comes out or possibly until December. Colors are gorgeous. (: Darn you urban decay.
i would love to see a look using chaos and occupy together…these are all really cool shades, though!
How similar is Chaos to Nars Outremer and Sugarpill’s Royal Sugar?
Outremer is bluer, Royal Sugar is closer!
It’s a shame that Jagged is so horrid, but everything else looks fabulous. I love the looks you created with the palette!
I’ve found that if you use a sticky base and apply a few layers with a fixing spray on top, (hairspray works as well) it gives it that multi-dimensional shimmery look that’s actually quite nice.
im such a sucker for these palettes. im in love with half the colours. seems more unique than many other UD palettes. but i didnt realize its size until you took the picture with your hand atop it. man that seems tiny compared to BOS
Its definitely more compact, but the eyeshadows are the same size as those in the various BoS’s. I love how it’s smaller, it makes it much easier to store and carry =)
Gosh. I don’t need it but I want it anyway. Thanks for your thorough reviews!
I’ve been searching for the perfect high end palette and the ones that caught my attention were Vice eyeshadow palette, naked 1 and naked 2
which one do you recommend for a make up rookie?
For neutrals, Naked 1, for a mix, Vice.
Okay, I just want to make sure I have these right (please correct me if I’m wrong!) In order of the pictures coming down, the eyeliners on your lower lashline are Tarina Tarantino Sparkling Ammunition, Kanzashi, and Amethyst Android, right? (I tried to match them from your review.) Just trying to make sure, so I can stock up while they’re on sale! 🙂
Yes 🙂
Christine, I don’t know how you got Chaos to come out so vibrant and beautiful on you. On me it is a chalky sheer mess. I had to apply it wet to even get a mediocre color payout. Junkie on the other hand comes out a fabulous emerald green on me, weird, but it and vice are my fave colors in the palette. For reference I am brown skin, like Janet Jackson or Brandy’s complexion.
🙁 I’m so sorry to hear that! Chaos definitely didn’t give me trouble!
i fallen in love with BLITZ. and I dont think there is dupe for it
I dont own any eyeshadow palettes so I am looking to purchase my first one but I cannot decided between UD Vice, UD BOS4, UD Naked 1, UD Naked 2 or Smashbox studio pop palette. I like wearing nudes but I also love wearing colors or even just spicing up a look by doing a nude eye with a little pop of color. Everyone I know has Naked 2 and tells me to get it but for me I feel like all the colors are so similar and there is no variety of colors. Im leaning more towards UD Vice. What would you recommend? or would you recommend something I haven’t mentioned within the >$60 range?
oo or the Cinderella pallet! Just saw that one and it looks super cute!
Hi Ellie!
I would say UD Vice 🙂
hi christine i love every make up review that u’ve made. totally in love *smooch from indonesia*;)
