Urban Decay Sheer Revolution Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.09 oz.) is supposed to have “sheer, pigmented color” with a “high-shine finish” and “buttery-smooth application.” The whole “sheer, pigmented color” bit is expanded further in the press release as wanting to design a formula that was “sheer (yet still pigmented!)” color.” It’s packaged similarly with the Sheer Revolution shades having a light purple coloring instead of gunmetal. They feel like a slightly thicker lip balm, so they glide on as they warm and melt against the lips without dragging, but they’re thinner and less creamy compared to the original formula. There’s a slight tackiness to them initially, but it seems to go away. The colors also tended to melt (almost like self-leveling) on the lips, so some of the shades looked better an hour into wear than they did initially. For me, they weren’t hydrating, but they weren’t drying either. The color payoff is more semi-opaque–sheer in the sense that there’s translucency there that allows the natural lip color to come through but still more pigmented than not (which does seem to be what Urban Decay was going for).

Urban Decay Sheer Rapture Sheer Revolution Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “sheer dusty-rose.” It’s a medium-dark, rosy plum with cool undertones and a soft sheen. It had semi-opaque color payoff that applied evenly and wore well for four hours. I liked this one the best of the three reviewed in this post, because it was really easy to apply and required no fussy to get even color. It was also the one shade that seemed to improve the look of my lips once on (an illusion of smoothness). Chanel Etourdie (98) (P, $35.00) is shimmery. Givenchy Rose Plumetis (207) is more opaque. (LE, $36.00) Urban Decay Rapture (P, $22.00) is darker, more opaque. MAC Plumful (P, $16.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Urban Decay Sheer Ladyflower Sheer Revolution Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “sheer rose-pink.” It’s a muted, medium pink with subtle, cool undertones and a light shine. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque pigmentation that went on fairly evenly. The thinner, but clingy, texture made my lips look less hydrated than they were (or at least, felt). This shade lasted for four hours on me. Urban Decay Ladyflower (LE, $22.00) is cooler-toned. Chanel Viva (95) (LE, $35.00) is more shimmery. MAC Pheromonal (LE, $17.00) is brighter. Givenchy Hibiscus Exclusif (302) (P, $36.00) is lighter, warmer. Guerlain Geraldine (77) (P, $51.00) is glossier, lighter. Bite Beauty Vigne (P, $24.00) is cooler-toned, brighter. Chanel Fougueuse (138) (P, $34.00) is brighter. Urban Decay Turn On (P, $22.00) is more opaque, brighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Urban Decay Sheer Anarchy Sheer Revolution Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “sheer fuchsia.” It’s a medium, cool-toned pink with blue undertones and a light shine. It had semi-opaque color coverage that gave lips a rather tinted look. I felt like it wasn’t quite even when I applied it, no matter how I tried to smooth the color into place. The color wore well for four hours on me. MAC Catharina (P, $23.00) is more opaque, less glossy. MAC Bold Spring (P, $22.00) is lighter. Bite Beauty Vigne (P, $24.00) is lighter. Tom Ford Beauty Incorrigible (08) (LE, $49.00) is brighter. MAC Heavenly Hybrid (LE, $16.00) is slightly darker. MAC Feeling Amorous? (LE, $20.00) is less cool-toned. Urban Decay Anarchy (P, $22.00) is brighter, cooler-toned, more opaque. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I was so sure I wasn’t going to like these but they actually look really pretty! I’m not a fan of sheer but this is definitely pigmented and sheer at the same time. I am guessing kind of like what the lip butters are?

“Ladyflower”? really? lol…

this formula seems to want it both ways too much. when I buy a sheer lipstick, I’m looking for a real *wash* of color, just a beautiful hint. If I want the look of “sheer but pigmented!” (confusing as that is) I’ll just take a regular lipstick and dot it on my lips and blend (basically use a little less than normal).

And for my money, if it’s gonna be sheer, it better be moisturizing. Sheer but STILL drying or even non-moisturizing isn’t worth it.

I think the definition of “sheer” depends on your own lip pigment, too. For people with more pigmented lips than Christine’s, these darker shades might well be considered a sheer wash of color and the lighter shades would look non-existent. For people with relatively little pigment in their lips, like Christine, Sheer Rapture appears to be “sheer”, whereas if I wore it, it would basically look like clear lip balm (or worse, be pasty looking). Sheer Ladyflower looks like it might show up a bit like a tinted lip balm on me (which I’m not sure I’d spend $20 for), but Sheer Anarchy looks like it might be worth putting on. Less pigment than a standard lipstick, but more than a tinted lip balm.

I am wild about this whole idea. None of the pinks in the regular Revolution line really suit me, so I have a much better chance with sheer iterations. I think I need Sheer Rapture.

These look pretty. How are they as far as moving around Like most glosses? I have the shades in the original formula. Is this much different than a light application over or under a balm or glosses you think?

Christine Avatar

They don’t move around much, so they’re definitely not like gloss (and don’t feel anything like gloss to me!). The original formula if patted on really lightly with balm might come close, but the original is definitely thicker overall so I think these feel different on, if that makes sense!

Nicole Avatar

It does! I like the look of these for a low key ,easy look And glossy that won’t be all over my face the second the wind blows my hair past my lip is a plus. Also, part of me will be happy to see that super matte look go to the wayside at least a little. I may have to get my butt to a Sephora or Ulta to swatch once they are released.lol..I just was digging thru my purse and found a 10% off coupon for UD online! Thanks for the review! Looking forward to more!

Nicole Avatar

How would you compare these with YSL Rouge Volupte? I skimmed a couple of reviews. They seem to be more hydrating with slightly less wear? obviously, more $. But, which is a better formula for a sheer color shine without moving all over your face? Sorry for the numerous questions. I have always really liked glosses. But find myself liking them less because they get all over the place!

Nicole Avatar

Hmm..I may prefer that..or both,lol!..I. Have been eyeing the ysl for the packaging alone. But,my lofty goal of owning at least 2 Geurlain Rouge G’s for Spring have stood in my way. I do like a variety. So glad none of these are LE. I’m starting to not like that concept

Lacey Avatar

Seems like these will be a good way to feel more comfortable trying some of the brighter and darker UD shades I tend to shy away from. But not until I’m finished with my low-buy, darn it! 🙂

Sylirael Avatar

I’ve wante Rapture for a long time, but now I think Sheer Rapture is right up there competig with it! So pretty. Also, THAT PACKAGING. I swear this was a calculared effort by UD to part me from my money… 😉 I’m not so excited about Ladyflower here though – I think I still want them to release the full pigment one as permanent!

Erin Avatar

I really like all of them! I’m surprised by how much I like Rapture. I think it would blend with own lip color nicely for a good MLBB/Nude look. Obviously I want Sheer Anarchy! I like LadyFlower but my lips are dry on and off so I’m not sure it would look good on em!

Rachel R. Avatar

Loving these. Rapture looks like a great MLBB shade for a lot of people. Sheer Ladyflower does justice to the original (which I love). I’m really into how Revolution is sheer but still really bright.
